Team news for Derry City v Longford Town

Tuesday, 09 May 2006 11:40

League Cup holders Derry City have major injury concerns in defence with Ken Oman (back) and Kevin Dery (ankle) joining Clive Delaney on the treatment table.

Gareth McGlynn, Eamon Doherty and Mark Farren also remain out while Mark McChrystal, who has requested a transfer, is in the Northern Ireland Under-21 squad for tomorrow's game with Liechtenstein.

Longford boss Alan Mathews is likely to field a full strength side similar to the one that earned them their first win of the season against Bohemians on Saturday night.

John Martin and Dean Fitzgerald remain sidelined, however.

Team news for Monaghan United v Bohemians
Tuesday, 09 May 2006 12:00

First Division basement boys Monaghan United will be hoping to avoid a fourth straight defeat as they entertain Bohemians at Century Homes Park tonight.

Defender Eoghan O'Shea remains out with a rib injury.

Bohs boss Gareth Farrelly is likely to field a strong side as he looks for his players to redeem themselves after a shocking showing in a 3-1 loss at Longford on Saturday.

Stephen Ward (ankle) and Des Byrne (knee) remain out while defender Jason McGuinness serves the first game of a three-match ban.

Team news for Sligo Rovers v Finn Harps
Tuesday, 09 May 2006 12:35

Sligo Rovers boss Sean Connor is considering his options following his side's worst display of the season in losing 3-0 at UCD last Saturday.

Connor could make changes or give the team a chance to regain some pride.

Skipper Michael McNamara is definitely out as he came off at half time at Belfield with a foot injury.

Harps, buoyed by their 3-2 win over Dundalk at the Showgrounds on Thursday, are without midfielder Barry Curran who got married at the weekend.

There are three games scheduled for the second round of the eircom League Cup tonight with the tie of the round taking place at the Brandywell. Big night for Bohs boss as well as tough North-West game.

Derry City vs Longford Town
(The Brandywell - 7:45 pm - League Cup - 2nd Round)
Referee: Stephen Toner

Derry's defence of the League Cup begins tonight against the previous winners Longford Town. Derry emerged with a narrow 1-0 win when the two sides met in the league in April, their third consecutive win over the Town.

Derry have to plan without Ken Oman and Kevin Deery through injury while Mark McChrystal is on international duty. Clive Delaney continues to miss out. Mark Farren and Eamon Doherty could return but manager Stephen Kenny may not risk them from the start.

Longford should be near full strength as they look to build on the weekend's first league win, a 3-1 result against Bohs.

Previous meeting(s) : Longford Town 0-1 Derry City (15/04/2006)
Derry City 3-1 Longford Town (09/09/2005)
Derry City 2-1 Longford Town (23/08/2005)
Longford Town 0-0 Derry City (18/06/2005)
Derry City 1-0 Longford Town (12/04/2005)
IrishFootballOnline.com Prediction: Home win.

Monaghan United vs Bohemians
(Century Homes Park - 8:00 pm - League Cup - 2nd Round)
Referee: Richie Winter

Under-fire Bohs manager Gareth Farrelly will know that anything other than a strong win in tonight's League Cup game could hasten his departure from the club. The Gypsies travel to the bottom team in the entire league, Monaghan United.

Bohs are without Jason McGuinness who begins a three game ban, although he sat out the loss in Longford anyway. Also missing will be Stephen Ward with an ankle problem with Dessie Byrne set to miss out for a similar reason. Farrelly is likely to field as strong a team as he possibly can.

IrishFootballOnline.com Prediction: Away win.

Sligo Rovers vs Finn Harps
(The Showgrounds - 8:00 pm - League Cup - 2nd Round)
Referee: Tony Kelly

Sligo Rovers and Finn Harps passed each other last season with Rovers taking Harps' place in the top flight. The two meet in a North-West derby tonight at the Showgrounds.

Rovers are hoping to bounce back from the heavy defeat to UCD at the weekend but Harps claimed a vital win away to Dundalk last Thursday.

Both sides are expected to be near full strength for the game.

Previous meeting(s) : Sligo Rovers 1-0 Finn Harps (31/05/2005)
Finn Harps 1-0 Sligo Rovers (06/10/2004)
Sligo Rovers 1-2 Finn Harps (03/07/2004)
Sligo Rovers 1-5 Finn Harps (14/06/2004)
Finn Harps 3-0 Sligo Rovers (16/04/2004)
IrishFootballOnline.com Prediction: Home win.

Monaghan United v Bohemians preview
Century Homes Park, Tuesday 9 May, Kick-off 8pm

Monaghan United will be without Eoghan O'Shea while midfielder Shane Harte is still struggling with a hamstring injury. Jimmy Fullam is available for selection against the team with which he was a double-winner, his suspension for his sending-off does not apply until the next league game.
Bohemians are without injured striker Stephen Ward, with veteran goalscorer Vinny Arkins continuing upfront in his place. Left-back Des Byrne is also an injury doubt, otherwise Bohemians have a full squad to choose from.

This will be a very tough test for Mick Cooke's men. Bohemians played a full-strength team in the last round against Athlone Town, and with a Setanta Sports Cup place available for the winners of this competition the League Cup is getting the full attention of player-manager Gareth Farrelly. Mick Cooke is likely to ring the changes after a disappointing display in Kildare, with Paul Whelan and Stephen Finnegan expected to make their first starts of the 2006 season. It should be an entertaining game, and United players will be keen to impress against their opponents who will include Kevin Hunt, former Ireland international Farrelly and Ireland Under-19 captain John-Paul Kelly.

Looks good over there Monty!

I meant the cows, yummy!

Anyway I fancy the bohs to knick it today. If they are up for it, I dont see Monaghan putting much of a resistance. Should be a close affair tho.

A worryng thing - gap between player-manager Gareth Farrelly and Bohs fans never been so big. Could be better if Bohs play today without their fans and their "support" to Bohs gaffer...
Bohs (1.75) are my only potential bet in LC today. Still hesitate though...

Re: Irish League Cup : 8th - 10th May

I've gone with Longford and Harps tonight, I believe the odds are way too big, esp. Harps as it's a local derby, the gap between themselves and Sligo isn't as big as the league tables might suggest.

Cork City v Cobh Ramblers team news
Wednesday, 10 May 2006 11:11

With a big home league clash with Shelbourne on Monday evening, champions Cork are unlikely to field a full strength side against neighbours Cobh in the League Cup at Turner's Cross tonight.

Denis Behan and Roy O'Donovan are away with the Ireland under-21s in Azerbaijan while boss Damien Richardson will rest keeper Michael Devine, defender Neal Horgan and striker Neale Fenn.

In come Mark McNulty, Cillian Lordan, Admir Softic and Vinny Sullivan.

Cobh, who beat Cork 1-0 in a pre-season game, are again without Kenny Coleman while Steve Yelverton, Kieran O'Reilly and Willie Bruton are all very doubtful starters.

Limerick FC v Kerry League team news
Wednesday, 10 May 2006 11:13

Though they are top of the First Division table, Limerick boss Noel O'Connor will be wary of the Kerry League ahead of their second round clash in the League Cup at Hogan Park tonight.

O'Connor was impressed when watching Kerry beat Kilkenny 2-0 in the first round and the fact they have ex-Limerick players Stephen O'Mahony, Chris Kearns, Timmy Lynch, James Sugrue and David Conway in their panel adds spice to the game.

"They are always well up for these games and they have traditionally given eircom League teams a very tough game," said O'Connor who has a full strength squad for the game.
