Re: Italy serie A (des 15-16)
from Channel 4 -
Quote:
Atalanta - Palermo
High-flying Atalanta host a reborn Palermo at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia in Week 16. The Bergamaschi will be without star man Cristiano Doni – who has been suspended for three games – which is a massive blow for them.
After losing two in a row, Palermo returned to victory last weekend against Fiorentina and are now hoping to improve their position in the table. Atalanta are in decent shape and were unlucky to come away from Juventus with a 1-0 loss on Sunday.
Both teams are in sixth position with 21 points and are chasing a UEFA spot. Last season’s encounter between the Lombardi and the Sicilians ended 1-1 – and the Nerazzurri would settle with that outcome this time around too.
Palermo boss Francesco Guidolin is pleased with his players. Beating Fiorentina was fundamental for their campaign and the Rosanero did a fine job. Guidolin is confident ahead of this clash and may decide to confirm an attacking 4-3-3 formation.
Brazilian midfielder Fabio Simplicio, who netted last week, is banned so Roberto Guana will replace him. Mark Bresciano and Bosko Jankovic will have to sit on the bench. The attacking package will be formed by the fantastic trio of Edison Cavani, Amauri and Fabrizio Miccoli.
Atalanta boss Gigi Del Neri is seriously concerned ahead of this tie because the Nerazzurri are a completely different side without their leader Doni. Leonardo Talamonti, Costinha and Ricky Zampagna are also unavailable.
Daniele Capelli should play in defence, while Simone Padoin and Tiberio Guarente are in competition for a spot in the midfield. Brazilian wing wizard Ferreira Pinto, one of Atalanta’s best players so far this season, is slightly injured and could miss out.
The attacking duo should be formed by Simone Inzaghi and Sergio Floccari, who have never played together before. However, Del Neri may decide to change his line-up and play with a more defensive 4-5-1 formation. In this case Inzaghi will have to sit on the bench with Antonino Bernardini stepping in.
Keep an eye on: Amauri (Palermo) – The top scorer for the Rosanero will want to add to his five goals this season as Palermo push further up the table.
Last season: Atalanta 1-1 Palermo
Form guide: Atalanta (W L W W L) Palermo (D W L L W)
Atalanta (probable): Coppola; Rivalta, Capelli, Carrozzieri, Bellini; Ferriera Pinto, De Ascentis, Padoin, Langella; Floccari, S.Inzaghi
Palermo (probable): Fontana; Zaccardo, Biava, Barzagli, Capuano; Guana, Migliaccio, Caserta; Cavani, Amauri, Miccoli
Cagliari - Inter
A desperate Cagliari will have to try and stop leaders Inter as they meet at the Stadio Sant’Elia in Week 16. The Nerazzurri have been outstanding recently, showing that they have no intention of abdicating their Italian throne. Cagliari have had one of their poorest campaigns ever and are still struggling to recover from their poor start.
Rossoblu Coach Nedo Sonetti, who replaced Marco Giampaolo, has been in charge at Cagliari for four weeks now but the results have been far from satisfactory. One point in four games and the Isolani are still bottom of the table. Meanwhile, the Nerazzurri have been flying towards their third straight Scudetto.
Last week Cagliari were hammered 4-1 by relegation rivals Empoli. Inter confidently defeated Torino 4-0 and also increased the gap between themselves and Roma, who were held by Livorno.
The Nerazzurri are still unbeaten and they have both Serie A’s best attack and defence. On the other hand, Cagliari haven’t won in nine games and have one of the weakest defences in the League.
Although the final result seems already written, there may be some surprises for the Nerazzurri in their trip to Sardinia. After all, the locals managed to grab a 1-1 draw the last time they met here.
Inter boss Roberto Mancini will have to deal with several absences. Marco Materazzi is not ready to play the full 90 minutes yet so Ivan Cordoba and Walter Samuel should be the central defenders. Patrick Vieira, Luis Jimenez, Dejan Stankovic and Olivier Dacourt are all out injured so Mancini will have to reinvent the midfield.
Romanian defender Cristian Chivu may be asked to play centrally with Santiago Solari and Javier Zanetti on the wings. Star man Zlatan Ibrahimovic is suspended. The Swedish ace will be replaced by Hernan Crespo.
Sonetti is well aware that this could be his last chance on the Rossoblu bench. During the week President Massimo Cellino contacted former Coach Giampaolo, who rejected the call.
There won’t be many differences to the Rossoblu side which faced Empoli last week. However, Robert Acquafresca and Davide Biondini will be out injured. Their places should be taken by Joaquin Larrivey and Alessandro Budel.
Keep an eye on: Julio Cruz (Inter) – ‘El Jardinero’ has scored eight goals so far this season. He has shown himself to be a world class striker and that’s why he has now become a regular at Inter.
Last season: Cagliari 1-1 Inter
Form guide: Cagliari (L L D L L) Inter (D W W W W)
Cagliari (probable): Marruocco; Pisano, Lopez, Bianco, Agostini; Parola, Conti, Budel; Foggia; Matri, Larrivey
Inter (probable): J Cesar; Maicon, Samuel, Cordoba, Maxwell; J.Zanetti, Cambiasso, Chivu, Solari; Crespo, Cruz
Catania - Udinese
High-flying Udinese will be looking to consolidate their top-four position when they travel south to take on Catania. They won’t have it all their own way, however, as the Sicilian outfit’s home form is the only thing which is keeping them out of the relegation zone.
The trouble for Silvio Baldini’s men is that although they are getting the results in front of their own support, it is rarely convincing – which is backed up by their meagre tally of just eight goals from seven games at the Stadio Massimino. So it is likely that the former Palermo boss will be fuming about Gionatha Spinesi’s ridiculous red card against Lazio, for using foul and abusive language towards the referee, which ensures that the goal getter is ruled out of this game.
Fortunately, this season’s top scorer Jorge Martinez is available once again after serving a ban of his own so he can slip back into the starting line-up in place of Spinesi, who netted the winner in this fixture last time out. Giacomo Tedesco is also back from suspension, but the ex-Reggina man is unlikely to play any part in this game through injury.
For Udinese boss Pasquale Marino this clash represents his first return to the Sicilian outfit since departing in the summer. The 45-year-old deserves to get a good reception from his old fans, as he took them up from Serie B and even had the Elefanti competing for a place in Europe before a mid-season collapse – sparked by the infamous Stadiopoli riots – saw them eventually only narrowly avoid relegation.
He won’t be planning any favours for his old team, which means that there is no place for Tomas Zapotocny after he gifted Sampdoria a penalty in the Zebrette’s 3-2 win over the Genoa-based outfit. The Czech was subbed off shortly afterwards to make way for Brazilian midfielder Giulherme Siquiera – a change which will be put in place from the word go this time out.
Elsewhere, Gaetano D’Agostino is available for selection after suspension so he is likely to take Roman Eremenko’s spot in the middle of the park, while Simone Pepe is tipped to come into the attack in place of Gyan Asamoah. Giampiero Pinzi looks set for a role on the bench after his recent ban, but Andrea Dossena still has a match to serve of his suspension.
Although recent form suggests that Udinese are the favourites for this game, it is worth noting that Catania were victorious in both meetings last term. Unfortunately, the man who secured both wins – Spinesi – won’t be on the pitch to ensure a similar outcome this term.
Keep an eye on: Fabio Quagliarella (Udinese) – The revelation of last season is back on song with four goals in as many games so expect more fireworks from the Azzurri ace.
Last season: Catania 1-0 Udinese
Form guide: Catania (L D L W L) Udinese (D W W L W)
Catania (probable): Polito; Sardo, Stovini, Terlizzi, Vargas; Edusei, Izco, Baiocco; Colucci, Martinez, Mascara
Udinese (probable): Handanovic; Lukovic, Felipe, Zapata; Mesto, D’Agostino, Inler, Siquiera; Pepe, Quagliarella, Di Natale
Empoli - Genoa
Out of form Genoa will be desperately trying to get their season back on track when they take on an Empoli side who fired four past Cagliari last weekend. It is thought that a defeat for the Grifone could spell the end of Gian Piero Gasperini’s time in the hot seat, seeing as they are without a win since the beginning of October.
In fact, all of Genoa’s victories this term came within a fortnight of each other. Since then there has been little to shout about, with three draws and five defeats being recorded. The latest, at home to Siena, was arguably the worst of the lot seeing as they put in a dismal display and were 3-0 down within 24 minutes. Only a last-gasp consolation goal from Luciano Figueroa prevented them from being completely humiliated.
The Argentine hitman – who Birmingham City fans might remember after he had a brief spell at St Andrews – is likely to be rewarded for his strike with a place in the starting XI. The man to miss out is expected to be Marco Di Vaio, who has netted just once this term and is struggling to live up to his reputation. Gasperini also looks set to make a double-change to his back three as Francesco Bega returns from suspension in place of Abdoulay Konko, while Gleison Santos is expected to replace Alessandro Lucarelli.
However, If Nicola Pozzi shows the same kind of form as he did against Cagliari then it doesn’t matter who Genoa put out in defence. The ex-Milan striker certainly had his shooting boots on as he netted all of the Azzurri’s goals in a 4-1 victory, making him the first player to net what is known is Italy as a ‘poker’ since Cristiano Lucarelli and Alberto Gilardino achieved the feat in the same game back in May 2005.
Unfortunately for Pozzi, Sebastian Giovinco is unlikely to be fully fit for this clash and is expected to be on the bench, meaning that he is likely to be handed a deeper attacking role. Luca Saudati is the man to benefit from the on-loan Juve star’s absence, giving him an opportunity to add to his two-goal tally. He is one of just four Empoli players to have scored in the League this term and was only surpassed as joint-top scorer by Pozzi’s Week 15 antics.
The last time these sides met was in the fourth round of the Coppa Italia last term, with Empoli emerging 2-0 victors over the two legs. The scorer of their second goal? You’ve guessed it – that man Pozzi.
Keep an eye on: Nicola Pozzi (Empoli) – His four goals against Cagliari lit up Week 15 and he’ll be hoping it is just what was needed to get his stop-start career up and running.
Last season: Not played
Form guide: Empoli (D L D L W) Genoa (D L L D L)
Empoli (probable): Balli; Raggi, Marzoratti, Pratali, Tosto; Busce', Marchisio, Moro; Vannucchi, Pozzi; Saudati
Genoa (probable): Rubinho; Bega, Bovo, Santos; Rossi, Paro, Juric, Fabiano; Leon, Borriello, Figueroa
Lazio - Juventus
Juventus hope to take full advantage of Lazio’s current crisis in order to stay in the Scudetto race, but have Delio Rossi’s men turned a corner?
The Biancocelesti had picked up just one point from their previous two games before beating Catania 2-0 on Sunday. That victory was only their third at the Olimpico, as the fortress has become more of a straw hut this season and Juve aim to huff, puff and blow it down. Home turf has been cruel to them so far, as Milan, Udinese, Roma and Fiorentina all came away with full points.
The Bianconeri can also be buoyed by the knowledge they are yet to lose to another ‘big’ club, picking up draws with Roma, Fiorentina, Inter and Milan. This will be the first time these two sides have met in Rome in almost precisely two years, when David Trezeguet and Tommaso Rocchi shared a 1-1 draw. Juve are unbeaten here since a 2-0 result in December 2003.
Although the injury crisis has taken its toll with Mobido Diakhite, Simone Del Nero, Valon Behrami, Fabio Firmani and Sebastiano Siviglia likely to be sidelined, these departments have held up relatively well. In attack they are almost entirely dependent on Tommaso Rocchi and Goran Pandev who, with five apiece, are responsible for 66 per cent of Lazio’s total goal haul. Mourad Meghni is still not delivering upon his promise as the ‘petit Zidane’, so Stefano Mauri may return to support the front two. Veteran goalkeeper Marco Ballotta maintains his place despite some costly howlers of late that have seen the fans begin to turn on the 43-year-old.
Juve’s hero on Sunday was former Lazio star Pavel Nedved, who grabbed a goal out of nowhere to celebrate his 300th Serie A appearance with the winner against Atalanta. The Czech legend spent five years with the Biancocelesti before his 2001 transfer to Turin. He is the only member of the old guard who has kept his place in midfield, as with Mauro Camoranesi injured the places have gone to Antonio Nocerino, Raffaele Palladino and Cristiano Zanetti.
Burned by their failure to impress in the Coppa Italia loss at Empoli last week, Claudio Ranieri warned the likes of Sergio Almiron and Tiago Mendes may not get another chance to prove themselves. He’s bound to stick with the tried and trusted squad at the Olimpico, players who have been consistent all term.
The one change might be Alessandro Del Piero back in the starting XI after three consecutive games where he has had to come off the bench for barely 20-minute cameos. Vincenzo Iaquinta’s form is no longer quite good enough to warrant this snub and Alex could be given his opportunity to shine in a big game.
Camoranesi and Zdenek Grygera are not expected to recover from muscular problems in time for the match, while Jorge Andrade remains sidelined by a long-term knee ligament injury. Tinker man Ranieri could adjust the tactics for a 4-4-2 system with Hasan Salihamidzic favoured instead of Palladino on the right wing. Nicola Legrottaglie and Giorgio Chiellini are becoming a solid central defensive partnership, the move inwards for the ex-Fiorentina star allowing Cristian Molinaro to bomb up and down that left flank.
Keep an eye on: Tommaso Rocchi (Lazio) – The go-to man for Lazio over the past three seasons tends to grab the important goals. It’s a special game for him, as he was rumoured to be in talks with Juventus over the summer.
Last season: Not played
Form guide: Lazio (L W D L W) Juventus (D D W D W)
Lazio (probable): Ballotta; De Silvestri, Stendardo, Cribari, Zauri; Mudingayi, Ledesma, Mutarelli; Mauri; Pandev, Rocchi
Juventus (probable): Buffon; Zebina, Legrottaglie, Chiellini, Molinaro; Salihamidzic, Nocerino, Zanetti, Nedved; Iaquinta, Trezeguet
Parma - Reggina
There’s a genuine relegation six-pointer in store at the Stadio Tardini as Reggina arrive to face fellow strugglers Parma.
Gialloblu boss Domenico Di Carlo claimed that he was happy with his side’s performance last week, despite a 1-0 defeat against Napoli. He won’t be saying the same here if the Ducali fail to claim maximum points.
A vital win over Empoli in Week 14 allowed the Crociati some breathing space, but that has now disappeared. It is looking increasingly like another nail-biting battle for Serie A status for a side that dream of so much more.
Reggina’s resurgence under wizened tactician Renzo Ulivieri ground to a halt in a 3-0 defeat at Sampdoria. The postponement of the Calbrians’ game against Milan may have been a blessing, but it also meant that they had far too long to dwell on their hammering at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.
While Ulivieri is a wily Coach and he knows his way around a relegation dogfight, he will be feeling the pressure as he returns to the side he was in charge of in 2002. While he will have set out for a win, Reggina are yet to triumph on their travels and know that a defeat here could leave them ominously stranded at the bottom.
Parma have a sizeable injury list. Key striker Igor Budan isn’t expected back in action until the New Year. Defenders Paolo Castellini, Ferdinand Coly and Marco Rossi are sidelined, leaving Alessio Tombesi to make his first start. Andrea Gasbarroni remains out of action.
The visitors travel north without Icelandic midfielder Emil Hallfredsson, Portuguese stopper Angelo Garcia and steady holding player Luca Tognozzi.
Keep an eye on: Massimo Paci (Parma) – The wing-back hit the winner against Empoli a fortnight ago and was busy against Napoli.
Last season: Parma 2-2 Reggina
Form guide: Parma (D D L W L) Reggina (L D W D L)
Parma (probable): Bucci; Falcone, Couto, Paci, Tombesi; Dessena, Parravicini, Cigarini, Pisanu, Reginaldo; Corradi
Reggina (probable): Campagnolo; Cherubin, Valdez, Aronica; Stadsgaard, Vigiani, Cascione, Missiroli, Modesto; Ceravolo, Amoruso
Sampdoria - Fiorentina
Fiorentina have come off the rails and need to get back on track, but it’s hard to gauge the size of their task against inconsistent Sampdoria at Marassi.
Sampdoria are one of Serie A’s most frustrating sides to support. Try as they might, the Blucerchiati seem incapable of maintaining a winning run. After waltzing to victory against Reggina, defeat against Udinese proved once again that Doria struggle to rise to the big occasion.
Now is the time for Walter Mazzarri to inspire some belief in his men – albeit from the stands after he was dismissed against Udinese. If the Genoa outfit can see off Fiorentina, they will be back on the path to UEFA Cup football. However, a defeat would leave them floundering once more in the dense thickets of mid-table mediocrity.
This is also a true test of Fiorentina’s fighting spirit. After losing a huge unbeaten run, the inevitable slump has kicked in. Defeats against Inter and Udinese were forgivable, but after losing at Palermo, there must be a response.
Cesare Prandelli is amongst the peninsula’s greatest motivators, but he may be struggling to find enthusiasm for the task after the tragic death of his wife. The highly talented Viola side need to rise up and deliver a much-needed three-point haul for a man who has given so much.
This fixture finished in a stalemate last time around, but Fiorentina thumped Samp 5-1 in their last meeting at the Stadio Artemio Franchi. The Viola have only conceded three times on their travels and should take confidence from the statistics.
Fiorentina’s defensive crisis is eased by news that Alessandro Gamberini’s injury isn’t as serious as feared. However, Tomas Ujfalusi and Alessandro Potenza won’t be featuring. Giampaolo Pazzini is set to get the nod over Christian Vieri to start alongside Adrian Mutu.
Mazzarri continues to make do without Vincenzo Montella, who is awaiting knee surgery, Reto Ziegler, Gennaro Delvecchio and Andrea Caracciolo. Paolo Sammarco is suspended.
Keep an eye on: Antonio Cassano (Sampdoria) – The fiery forward is showing glimpses of the potential that makes him one of Italy’s biggest hopes for the future.
Last season: Sampdoria 0-0 Fiorentina
Form guide: Sampdoria (W W L W L) Fiorentina (W L D L L)
Sampdoria (probable): Castellazzi; Campagnaro, Sala, Gastaldello, Maggio; Palombo, Volpi, Pieri; Cassano, Bellucci, Bonazzoli
Fiorentina (probable): Frey; Balzaretti, Dainelli, Kroldrup, Pasqual; Donadel, Liverani, Montolivo, Semioli; Pazzini, Mutu
Siena - Napoli
Siena and Napoli will both be desperate to take all three points when they meet, but for very different reasons. While the home side are trying to escape the relegation battle, the Neapolitan visitors are in danger of losing touch with the race for Europe.
Despite a poor start to the season, things are looking better for Siena now. After winning just once in their opening 14 League games, they finally defeated Genoa 3-1 to record their first away victory and ease the pressure in Tuscany. The Bianconeri’s only other win came against Empoli, which is fortunate as that head-to-head record is the only thing currently keeping them out of the relegation zone. But if the Robur can continue the good form they have shown since the reinstatement of last season’s Coach Mario Beretta in Week 13 then they could start to edge away from danger.
The biggest loss for Siena ahead of this match is the suspension to ever-present midfielder Simone Vergassola. The only injuries are to fringe players Mirko Guadalupi and Alberto so Beretta won’t be to concerned about them. Goalkeeper Alex Manninger should keep his place after replacing Dimitrios Eleftheropoulos since the tactician’s arrival, as should Mario Frick in attack following his brace against Genoa.
Napoli will also be mostly worried about their suspensions after wing-back Mirko Savini and flamboyant forward Ezequiel Lavezzi both picked up one yellow card too many. That has heralded a change of formation by Coach Edy Reja, who looks set to bring in Emanuele Calaio alongside Mariano Bogliacino slightly behind striker Marcelo Zalayeta to create the new 3-4-2-1 system. Savini’s absence means that both Gianluca Grava and Gyorgy Garics will play, with the latter switching to the left side.
The Partenopei know they must overcome their awful away form sooner rather than later if they are to maintain their push for a place in Europe next term. While they have been very impressive at the Stadio San Paolo, they have only recorded one away win and that came as far back as Week 2. After losing three consecutive games on their travels, including a humiliating 5-1 reverse in their last trip, the Azzurri will be desperate to turn things around in Siena.
Keep an eye on: Marcelo Zalayeta (Napoli) – The Uruguayan striker is on red-hot form in front of goal, but it will be interesting to see how he gets on without the assists and intelligent support of his regular partner Ezequiel Lavezzi
Last season: Not played
Form guide: Siena (D L L D W) Napoli (D L W L W)
Siena (probable): Manninger; Bertotto, Portanova, Loria, De Ceglie; Jarolim, Codrea, Galloppa; Locatelli; Frick, Maccarone
Napoli (probable): Iezzo; Cupi, Cannavaro, Domizzi; Grava, Blasi, Gargano, Garics; Bogliacino, Calaio; Zalayeta
Torino - Roma
Torino and Roma’s form has stuttered recently and both sides will be keen not to drop down the table with a defeat in this match. Another slip by either team could make it very difficult to achieve their targets this season.
The Giallorossi are finding it tough to keep up with League leaders Inter and this match should be a good judge of the capital club’s Scudetto credentials. The Nerazzurri faced Torino last week at the San Siro and defeated them 4-0, something their title rivals will be hoping they can replicate when they visit the Stadio Olimpico. Their draw with Livorno in Week 15 will have dampened their spirits slightly, but Coach Luciano Spalletti will be quick to remind his team that they are still in second place and within six points of first.
Roma’s injury problems are making Spalletti’s task more difficult though. Marco Andreolli, Julio Sergio, Alberto Aquilani, Marco Cassetti, Matteo Brighi and Gianluca Curci are all out injured while Rodrigo Taddei’s storming return from injury is halted by a suspension. They may not usually be the first names on the team sheet but their absences have left the tactician short of options. The good news is that captain Francesco Totti is expected to play after coming back from another ankle and foot problem courtesy of a specially modified boot against Cagliari and Livorno.
Coach Walter Novellino doesn’t have much to ponder from the Toro bench though. Their only absentee is expected to be young defender Matteo Rubin, meaning that he has an otherwise full squad to choose from. He is expected to make changes in midfield though following their thrashing at the hands of Inter and the failed experiment with Salvatore Lanna in a holding role. Vincenzo Grella and Eugenio Corini should return, with Paolo Zanetti the other player to make way.
The Granata know that they need a win or they risk getting sucked into the relegation battle. After drawing four matches in a row, that heavy defeat in Milan last week has left them just two points clear of the bottom three so they can’t afford any other setbacks. Their nine draws so far are more than any other team in Serie A, but if they can change that trend and start adding to their measly tally of just two wins then they can start thinking about a top-half finish.
Keep an eye on: Cicinho (Roma) – The pacey Brazilian has struggled to live up to his hype so far at full-back, but he could have more luck if he features in a more advanced winger’s role as expected.
Last season: Torino 1-2 Roma
Form guide: Torino (D D D D L) Roma (D W W W D)
Torino (probable): Sereni; Comotto, Natali, Di Loreto, Dellafiore; Grella, Corini, Barone; Rosina, Di Michele; Ventola
Roma (probable): Doni; Panucci, Mexes, Juan, Tonetto; De Rossi, Pizarro; Cicinho, Giuly, Mancini; Totti

Catania without Spinesi, but with Mascara and Martinez can score a goal, same thing for Udinese with doubt Di Natale but with Quagliarella in great form.
Juve i think win this match but Lazio is tought in home always.
Juve without Camoranesi Iaquinta, Lazio have many doubts in midfield and in defenders.Rocchi&Pandev confirmed in attacking.
