Preview: Cork City v Drogheda United
One of the crunch games of the season happens at Turner's Cross, Cork on Sunday afternoon as Cork City host League of Ireland leaders Drogheda United. Drogheda put aside their UEFA Cup ambitions to refocus on their mounting title challenge but Cork are looking to reel in the leading sides as they get back into the swing of domestic competition.
Cork City beat Waterford United 2-0 during the week after surviving an early scare when Waterford missed a penalty. One of the Cork highlights in the game was Leon MacSweeney's first goal for the club while Roy O'Donovan scored his twentieth of the year.
Drogheda were in San Marino and although they only recorded a 1-1 draw with Libertas, still look well positioned to advance to the second qualifying round of the UEFA Cup.
The clubs have met already this season with the April meeting ending in a 2-2 draw. Both teams go into the game on the back of good form. Cork are unbeaten in four league games and have won their last three. Drogheda are unbeaten in six in the league and have won their last four.
Drogheda's travelling may take a toll on Sunday with the club due to fly to Cork after a marathon trip back from San Marino. They may have to plan without the late winners they have recorded in their last two league games as legs are sure to be tired before the end at Turner's Cross.
Cork boss Damien Richardson is not downplaying how important games are for Cork at this stage of the season, "This is a very important game for us, and realistically it is our most important of the season so far as the league leaders come to town on the back of a tremendous run of results."
The Cork manager is hoping for a big crowd at the game, "Games between Drogheda United and Cork City have developed into one of the major fixtures of the domestic football calendar, and we will require a big performance of great quality to get the three valuable points. I am looking forward to seeing a big crowd at Turner's Cross for this game, and one that will hopefully generate the kind of special atmosphere that the Rebel Army is famous for, which will spur the team on as they aim to achieve the necessary result."
City captain Dan Murray is hoping the side show improvement on the last outing, "We will have to up our performance from the Waterford game, but we know we are capable of doing that, and we are looking forward to the challenge. It was good to see Leon getting his first goal against Waterford, and it is important that we all start to chip in with a few more goals, because we canīt be relying on Roy to score them all."
Darragh Ryan and Brian O'Callaghan were both due to line out for City's under-21's on Saturday evening to prove their fitness but Colm Carroll remains out with a long term knee injury. Cork also have injury concerns hanging over Roy O'Donovan and Liam Kearney with respective hamstring and ankle problems leaving them doubtful.
Declan O'Brien, Shane Barrett, Ollie Cahill and Jason Gavin remain sidelined by injury for Drogheda although Richie Baker return to action on Thursday night. James Keddy returns to the squad having missed the trip to San Marino for personal reasons. Sami Ristilla and Steven Gray are carrying knocks from Thursday night's game and are doubtful.
Cork City are asking supporters to allow themselves some extra time to get into the ground following the installation of new turnstiles at Turner's Cross. The club are also laying on a special day of entertainment including a stilt walker and football freestyler. There will also be a prize draw with anyone present entered automatically.
