Singapore League (16-20.05.2007)

The week ahead: round 10

Wednesday

Albirex Niigata (Singapore) v Liaoning Guangyuan at Jurong East Stadium

The White Swans’s aforementioned win over the Super Reds was also incidentally their biggest win in the S.League since the club made its debut in 2004. After a sluggish start to the season, Albirex are sitting in fifth and are on a six-match unbeaten run in the league. The Awesome Foursome of Genji Nakamura, Eiichiro Ozaki, Akira Takase and Tetsuya Okayama will be the main attacking threat from Hiraoki Hiraoka’s men. But Liaoning Guangyuan are a different kettle of fish altogether compared to the Koreans and the many ex-Sinchi personnel in the Liaoning camp will be familiar with the physical – and at times, bordering on spiteful – encounters with the Japanese side. Liaoning coach Ding Zhe will have to make do without the services of Li Zheng, Tong Di and Zheng Haifeng for the trip to the Jurong East Stadium as all three are suspended.

Thursday

Gombak United v Balestier Khalsa at Jurong West Stadium

Nor Azli Yusoff sits this one out after his red card at the Tampines Stadium on Sunday. Salim Moin’s side were more than a handful for the Stags, especially their forward line who were causing defeneive headaches for Sead Muratovic and Shariff Abdul Samat all night. Rezal Hassan denied Ruhaizad Ismail's spot kick in stoppage time but despite their 1-0 loss, the Bulls remain in fourth place with 14 points from nine matches.

The Tigers slip down to ninth after last Thursday’s 3-1 loss against Home United at the Toa Payoh Stadium. Home (the Toa Payoh Stadium, not the club) does not seem quite where the heart is, as far as the Tigers are concerned, at this stage of the season. Their record away from home of two wins from four matches is actually pretty decent. Which means you could easily back them to come away with a good result from the Jurong West Stadium on Wednesday, although it would be interesting to see how they would cope with Gombak’s African connection.

Thursday

Sengkang Punggol v Tampines Rovers at Hougang Stadium

The hosts go into this match with nine points from as many matches. Sengkang Punggol have actually scored more goals than the four teams above them in the table but it has been their second half defensive displays which have been disappointing. Consider this: they let a two-goal second half lead slip against Woodlands in the 3-2 loss on 17 April and that injury-time equaliser to the Super Reds twelve days later. You’d back the Dolphins to score against most teams, but you’d also fancy them letting in a few at the other end too.

With a place in the last eight of the AFC Cup secure, these are happy days for high-flying Tampines Rovers, who sit in third at the start of the week. The Stags started their last match without Noh Alam Shah and Ridhuan Muhammad but there was a welcome return for the player who last appeared in a Tampines shirt in February: Sead Muratovic. No doubt the Serbian will be given time to work his way back to full fitness but even the man himself has admitted the enormous effort he will have to put in to dislodge his very able replacement in the centre of defence, Shariff Abdul Samat. Santi Chaiyaphuak is suspended after his sending-off against Gombak United on Sunday.

Friday Night Football

Home United v Singapore Armed Forces FC at Jalan Besar Stadium

In what is being billed as the biggest match of the season so far, we have the battle between the top two teams in the S.League. Both Home and SAFFC came through with relatively straightforward wins against Balestier Khalsa and the Young Lions respectively last week and will want to put daylight themselves and the chasing pack early in the campaign.

With seven goals between them already, Home’s new central midfield pairing of Shahril Ishak and Shi Jiayi have wasted little time endearing themselves to the Protectors faithful. Splashing the cash on additions in the off-season is already looking a wise move with Home dropping only five points from nine matches. Their opponents on Friday, meanwhile, are top only on goal difference which is surely down to the goals of the hottest player in the league at the moment, Aleksandar Duric. The 37-year-old forward has already scored twelve in nine matches. His total for the whole of last season was 19.

Sunday

Young Lions v Geylang United at Jalan Besar Stadium

Hariss Harun created his bit of history last Saturday by becoming the youngest goalscorer in the S.League. But it all ended pear-shaped for the Young Lions as they went down 3-1 to SAFFC at the Choa Chu Kang Stadium. V Sundramoorthy’s side has had a stop-start sort of season but with three home wins already this season, you’d back them against a solid albeit unspectacular Geylang outfit.

The Eagles took their lead in their last two league matches against Albirex Niigata (S) and Woodlands Wellington but only managed to grab two points from those matches. Syed Thaha will serve the second of his two match suspension after his red card at the Jurong East Stadium, which could mean an extended run in the first team for the Korean midfielder Bae Jin Soo. Geylang have not won in their two previous visits to the Jalan Besar Stadium this season.

Re: Singapore League (16-20.05.2007)

Albirex Niigata FC (S) - Liaoning Guangyuan FC

Date & Time: 16 May 2007 7:45:00 PM

info@sleague.com

They may be deprived of four key veterans due to injury and suspensions, but the match against Albirex Niigata FC (Singapore) on Wednesday evening could prove to be a crucial affair for struggling side Liaoning Guangyuan.

The Chinese outfit will be without central midfielders Zhang Haifeng and Li Zheng, attacking pivot Tong Di and top striker Yao Li when they visit Jurong East Stadium. Zhang, Li and Tong are serving suspensions, while Yao is still nursing a bad hamstring.

Considering the seniority of the quartet, their collective absence against Albirex can only be described as four severe blows, as it leaves Ding Zhe short on senior players to depend on for inspiration.

Yet the Chinese coach believes that the upcoming clash with the White Swans is actually winnable, as he builds his gameplan around what limited resources he still has.

“Our goal against the Japanese team can be described in four words: Stay level, pursue victory,” said Ding at the team’s training session at Queenstown Stadium.

“It’s a very simple requirement, but it has to be that simple because we have three suspensions and Yao is injured. But we still have experienced defenders, so the team will base the game on defence and try to find chances to hit them on the counter.

“On attack, we still have Zhu Kai and Liu Bin, but it is likelier we will need the speed and running that the younger players can give. That has a bigger chance of giving us an advantage when we run at Albirex’s defence.

“I have watched this team in a few games, and their players show a good understanding with each other and are organized. But their defenders are physically weaker than our attackers, and they like to attack in numbers, so we still have hope in a counterattack.”

While the Liaoning coach’s stoic optimism is clear, it is a sentiment that surely is not shared by many spectators, if the team’s last home match against Sengkang Punggol was anything to go by.

On that occasion, sections of the crowd expressed their dissatisfaction with what they saw on the pitch, and even clearly shouted to the players to “go home to China” as they fell to a 0-2 defeat.

The otherwise quiet atmosphere that evening meant that Ding and his bench, seated opposite the grandstand as they were, could hear those comments loud and clear.

But rather than feeling anger towards the fans for making such statements, he agreed that they actually had a point and that the onus was on the players to deliver.

“I know the local fans are voicing their disappointment with our performances,” he acknowledged.

“Never mind them, even I am disappointed with my players’ performances. But at least there is something good in hearing the spectators say this, because it means they care.

“If we performed like this and they did not say anything, then that would be even worse because it means they do not care anymore, they have become indifferent. Telling us we are bad means they expect us to give them something better.

“The club management has told the players about as much, that they need to meet the demands the local spectators have of a good team. Maybe these comments will provoke the players into improving, so that they don’t have to hear them again.”

If the Liaoning players needed to hear something more encouraging, they could be surprised to find an unlikely supporter in the form of Albirex coach Hiroaki Hiraoka.

The 37-year-old revealed that he had always rated the Chinese side more highly than Korean Super Reds, who were routed for five without reply last week by his team. In fact, he expressed puzzlement at Liaoning’s current plight.

“The Chinese team may be bottom of the league, but the way they play their game, they don’t look like they belong at the bottom,” he remarked.

“In fact, I am very surprised to see them at the bottom. There must be something wrong with the team at the moment, but I believe they have much more potential because of the experienced players they have.

“We are very lucky that they will be missing so many experienced players, but even with the squad left, they cannot be underestimated. They play some very good football, and we can expect a very hard battle against them tomorrow.

“The only worry I have is that they may become especially aggressive towards us because we are Japanese and they are Chinese. Our team won’t do that, because this game is as important as any other, but I don’t know about them.”

When quizzed on the Sino-Japanese tension element, Ding quickly put out a reassuring message that his team will not be targeting Albirex for especially hostile treatment.

He conceded, however, that national pride was at stake as Liaoning is regarded as China’s representative in the S.League, and against a fellow foreign side like Albirex, victory will inevitably mean more than simply three points in the bag.

“We are, after all, a foreign team in this football league in Singapore,” he reasoned.

“We therefore fly our country’s flag when we compete here, just as Albirex flies Japan’s flag and the Koreans fly their country’s flag. So when two foreign teams meet, each team puts its nation’s face and name on the line.

“I have to make it clear, though, that it’s not about politics for me. I don’t think the political history between the two countries should have anything to do with football.

“But we are a Chinese team and they are a Japanese team, so both of us will want to do our respective country’s football proud. The players will surely have that on their minds.”

Re: Singapore League (16-20.05.2007)

Ok... I was right about Woodlands vs the Reds. Pity it wasn't 5-0 or I would have been in orbit.

Today it is Albirex vs Liaoning.

As I said I don't watch all the matches this year cos of work and the lack of a VIP pass so I may not be so familiar. I've watched Liaoning a couple of times and mostly they are shit. Albirex on the other hand though a lot weaker than previous years are far more stable and consistent. They held invited team Bangkok University 0-1 in the Singapore Cup. And remember Bangkok University plays in the Asian Champions league beating teams like Chunnam Dragons so... I don't think Albirex has been trashed by any team yet this season. For Liaoning on the other hand, the best thing to be said is that they have not been trashed by every team.

So ordinarily I would say, take the Japs (Albirex) especially since the Chinese are missing key players. But but but..... a couple of weeks ago after a date with a charming girl I decided to pop into Queenstown Stadium and check how many goals Liaoning was down. They did lose 3-4 to Woodlands in the end but for the 20 mins that I caught they looked very go-oo-d. Robust, strong, determined and energetic.

Next game they lost 0-2 to unfancied Sengkang and I didn't catch that one but reports said supporters chanted at them to go home.

This is not one of the games where if the favourite doesn't win the ground will open up but Albirex should win. Government odds are now at $1.22 for Albirex which I'm not comfortable with. I was thinking $1.50+?

Anyway, Japs vs Chinese is always a spicy encounter so may just go down and hope to see an altercation or two.

Good luck to all who choose to delve into the great unknown!!!

Re: Singapore League (16-20.05.2007)

Good stuff,YLW

Gombak United FC - Balestier Khalsa FC
Date & Time: 17 May 2007 7:45:00 PM

info@sleague.com

Gombak United will be eager to claim back their fourth spot on the table as they clash with Balestier Khalsa this Thursday evening at Jurong West Stadium.

Going a goal down to third-placed Tampines Rovers last Sunday, the Bulls were unable to stage a comeback, despite being awarded a penalty.

As it is, Woodlands Wellington sits above them with a point advantage, although Gombak have a game in hand.

Talking to sleague.com, team manager Jeffrey Lee was still rueful about his side's penalty shot saved at Tampines stadium.

"Before the game we actually asked Precious (Emuejeraye) to take it, but during the build-up to the penalty, he (Ruhaizad) told his teammates he was confident, so they let him take it.

"I also thought we could have at least secured a point at the way the players played.

"There's a slight regret with the misses but it's just one of those days and I don't blame Ruhaizad or anyone," said Lee.

Despite admitting that the defeat was a small setback to his team's otherwise vast improvement this season, Lee remained buoyant and confident with their performance so far.

"We're not expecting much. Our expectations are just at the middle of the table.

"Everyone wrote us off before the tournament, but now they're saying that we are a better team.

"Let's wait and see," explained Lee.

However, to claim all three points and surge ahead on the table, they will have to go through a stern test against the Balestier Tigers.

Lee knows that his opponents are capable of creating an upset.

"Balestier is a very physical side, and they have a good strike force upfront," explained Lee, who is cautious of forward Norikazu Murakami and Nigerian Mba Vitus Onyekachi.

"They played well against Home United and could have equalised, if not for the send off.

"I'm confident though it'll be a tough match, but we'll have the upper hand in it," said Lee.

Gombak will have to do without two of their cornerstone defenders - Faizal Senin is still nursing a knee injury while Nor Azli Yusoff is serving a one-match suspension.

Captain Sevki Sha'ban will return again to the starting line to fill in Faizal's position while Winston Yap will replace Nor Azli this Thursday.

The Tigers' coach, Abdul Karim, felt that Gombak would be a hard team to maul and concurred with Lee on the level of competition in the upcoming match.

"Gombak is currently peaking form and they have been having very good games.

"So far they're on a high so it's going to be difficult to beat them but we'll have to do better this time around to win.

"One thing's for sure, it'll be a big battle - the battle of Jurong West!" he mused.

Sengkang Punggol FC - Tampines Rovers FC
Date & Time: 17 May 2007 7:45:00 PM

info@sleague.com

Sengkang Punggol will have an uphill task ahead of them when they host high-flying Tampines Rovers this Thursday night.

The already tough match will be made that much harder with the suspensions to key personnel, Haris Sumri and Nabeel Yusoff and injuries to defenders Firdaus Salleh and Cole Tinkler.

Sengkang head coach, Trevor Morgan knows that the game could shape up to be a very tough encounter.

“Tampines are one of the top sides in the league, and it will be a very difficult game for us.”

“Haris Sumri, Nabeel Yusoff are suspended and Cole Tinkler and Firdaus Salleh are injured. We won’t be at full strength but we will give it a go and play to the best of our ability,” he added.

Morgan had set a seven point target from four games, starting from the Korean Super Reds game, 2 weeks ago.

Sengkang have managed to pick up four points from two games. They drew 1-1 with Super Reds and won 2-0 against Liaoning.

“At the moment, we are doing quite well and I know what we can and can’t do on the pitch,” said Morgan on his team’s current run.

It should also be noted that Sengkang have four more days of rest than Tampines.

“We may be fresher coming into this game but Tampines have a huge squad to choose from,” he said.

“They have a lot of quality and they even had the luxury of bringing Alam Shah on as a substitute in the previous game (against Gombak United).”

Meanwhile, Tampines will be more motivated in this game. The Stags almost slipped up against Gombak earlier this week, if not for a last minute penalty save by veteran goalkeeper, Rezal Hassan.

Also, a win this Thursday will put them on top of the standings.

Tampines have only one real problem for this match and it is the suspension to wing back, Santi Chaiyaphuak.

Re: Singapore League (16-20.05.2007)

Home United FC - Singapore Armed Forces FC
Date & Time: 18 May 2007 7:30:00 PM

info@sleague.com

If ever there is a time for the real men to stand up and be counted, there’s no other better time than this Friday when two of the biggest sides in S-League football face each other in the top-of the table clash at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

This mouthwatering fixture will pit fierce, perennial rivals SAFFC and Home United – both teams are tied for first place with 22 points from nine matches played.

Last season, the Warriors managed to collect seven points out of the three fixtures that involved the Protectors. Furthermore, their evergreen striker Aleksandar Duric found the net on two occasions – all the signs look promising for Richard Bok’s side.

However, Richard maintained that last season’s results are nothing more than old statistics and his players are fully aware that the Protectors will be a different proposition altogether this Friday.

The Warriors’ coach said, “I don’t think that there will be any complacency on my players’ part. We are level on (22) points with them (Home United) and it will be a very tough game.

“Firstly, we are playing at the Jalan Besar Stadium, not Choa Chu Kang Stadium. The first team who can adapt to the pitch will control the game.

“Secondly, they (Home) are a quality side full of dangerous forwards such as Qiu Li, Kengne (Ludovick) and Indra (Sahdan). Shi Jiayi also controls the midfield well so there’s no way my players are expecting an easy time,” he pointed out.

Both the Protectors and the Warriors came through with victories against Balestier Khalsa and the Young Lions respectively. Unfortunately for Vincent Subramaniam’s side though, defender Shahril Alias picked up his fifth yellow card of the season and he will be suspended for this game.

The good news is that defender Juma’at Jantan will be available for selection after serving his one-match suspension. Ditto for Ivorian defensive midfielder Diakite Fode Bangaly.

While Diakite is expected to return to central midfield duties, Juma’at may be deployed as a leftback should Vincent choose Rosman Sulaiman to partner S Subramani in the heart of the defence.

While the Warriors have no suspension worries, they do have an injury in the goalkeeping department. Shahril Jantan, who picked up a knee injury in the AFC Cup game against Mahindra United, is out for at least another week.

Reserve custodian Toh Guo’An is a competent replacement but ring-rustiness from the lack of competitive games may be a significant factor. The Protectors will definitely test Toh from the start.

It is in these kinds of matches where all players – whether first eleven material or the fringe types - will have to stand up and be counted.

One such player who could be a significant factor is striker Masrezwan Masturi. He may not be included in the starting lineup this Friday but he will pose a major threat coming off from the bench should Richard deploy him in such a way.

The Warriors’ coach commented, “He (Masrezwan) still needs build up his fitness as he has started only one game but it is a good thing that he broke his scoring duck in the game against the Young Lions. It has increased his confidence tremendously.”

Re: Singapore League (16-20.05.2007)

HOME United-SAF FC

Mustaqim, Shaiful looking forward to Home clash

info@sleague.com

What more motivation do you need when you face your fiercest rivals - who happen to be tied with your team for top spot in the S.League – in what is surely, the most anticipated match of the season so far?

For SAFFC’s Mustaqim Manzur and Shaiful Esah, Friday’s match against Home United is not only shaping up to be a stern examination of the Warriors’ title credentials, it could very well be an opportunity for the two to prove the watching National Team selectors their worth.

25-year-old winger Mustaqim, however, refuses to be drawn into talk of being called up to the National Team ahead of what is expected to be a busy June of international matches.

"Friday will be the top-of the table clash and we have been preparing all week to be ready for this fixture," he said.

"I am confident that we can go for the win and consolidate our position at the top of the table. It will be tough, though, because both teams will go at it from the start."

When pressed about his National Team ambitions, Mustaqim said: "I will just do my best. I am not that hard up on making it to the National team.

"If I am called up, I consider it a blessing. If not, life goes on and I will continue doing my best.

"I also need to improve on a few aspects of my game. Obviously, I need to work on my upper body to get physically stronger. Once I beef up my body, I think I stand a better chance of getting call-ups consistently," said Mustaqim, who earned his last National Team call-up in 2005.

Like his team-mate, Shaiful also did not want to be distracted by terrace talk of him potentially galloping down the left side of midfield in a Lions shirt for the 21-year-old defender would much rather concentrate on Friday’s match.

He said, "My team is psyched up for the match. It will be a close fight but I believe we can edge Home United.

"I don’t even know if I am selected to play this Friday because we have good depth in this squad.

"The only thing I can do is that if I am selected, I will give my best in the game, be consistent and prove to the National Team coach that I am worthy of a place in the SEA Games squad," Shaiful said.

Shaiful was in the shortlist for the 2005 SEA Games squad but missing the AFF U-23 Championships in Thailand due to club commitments led to him being taken off the final squad.

But the man with the trusty left peg has not done his chances for this December’s SEA Games any harm with a string of solid performances this season already.

National Team manager Eugene Loo believes that both Mustaqim and Shaiful are quality players but they will have to put in a lot of effort if they want to play for the Lions consistently.

Loo said: "They (Mustaqim and Shaiful) will have to work their way up. There’s stiff competition in the National ‘A’ Team so they have to establish themselves in the squad if they get called up."

Re: Singapore League (16-20.05.2007)

HOME United-SAF FC
18 May 2007, Friday

On Friday, 18 May 07, the Warriors take on the Protectors of Home United FC in a top-of-the-table clash at the Jalan Besar Stadium. Kick off at 1930 hrs.

With both teams separated at the top of the standings only by goal difference, this match has all the ingredients of a Cup final. At stake are 3 points and the chance to pull ahead at the top of the pack.

The Protectors are in good form and have shown championship quality in their last few matches. However, this will be a derby match between the 2 uniformed clubs with more than just 3 points at stake. Clashes between the arch-rivals have always been explosive and Friday night will be no different. With ex-Warriors coach, Vincent Subramaniam, at the helm, the Protectors are a tightly knitted team and, on their day, looked unstoppable.

Richard Bok, however, is quietly confident that his charges can upstage his previous mentor’s side. The Warriors are the defending champions and have the consistency and quality to win this one. It will be hard to separate the 2 top guns and all signs point to an exciting and action-packed encounter at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

Re: Singapore League (16-20.05.2007)

HOME United- SAF FC - 18th May

"The top of the table clash between the Protectors and the Warriors would be the closest thing Singaporeans would come to experience a vociferous and nail-biting derby match.

While Jose Mourinho has lamented that the Chelsea and Man Utd clash should have come earlier as it has the potential to become a full-blown title decider - match of the century - type of game - but could only ended up to be one where nothing matters anymore (since Man U already won the league).
So here in Singapore, the clash of the titans have been scheduled much earlier. Will this one match be the all crucial season decider? Will the losing team, at the end of the season, reminisce about the importance of this match? Well, all I know is that it will definitely be a morale and confidence booster for the winning team!"

Home United face off against bitter rivals SAFFC, in a must-win clash to decide who goes to the top of the S-League table. Only one team has the right to the ownership of the title trophy, and just about only one team deserves to win it, one could say.

Home United enter this game fresh from slaying the Tigers of Balestier Khalsa in their own backyard, where not only the Home’s coach but also all the hardworking flag-waving fans rejoiced in the happiness of a sweet victory. A `certain’ coach was watching in the stands, as he would have definitely noted down somewhere in his notepad that even without stepping out of second gear, the Protectors would still grind out results. SAFFC meanwhile is also alight after a esounding victory over the Young Lions over the weekend.

The last time Home United beat their opponents was in late 2005, when inspired by Egmar Goncalves, the Protectors put five past their rivals without reply. Everyone was delighted with the win in Bishan Stadium as it capped an eventful end to an otherwise uneventful season. So far, barring the fact that Geylang won their only title in 2001, the S-League championship has been monopolised by Home and SAFFC. Every match, every encounter and every fixture involving both teams promises plenty of excitement and fireworks.

With three points, be sure both teams would be up for the challenge as soon as the final whistle blows. The likes of Qiu Li, Jia Yi, Ludovick, Kone and Lenan can be counted on to give their best. One can be sure; a titanic tussle is on the cards.
