Bound to be some shocks in the early games so I would avoid anyone too short..i.e Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Spain, regardless of how sure you are that they will win, this is international tournament betting and is unreliable..if you want to bet on a 1.3 shot do it on a domestic league game where form and previous results will actually count for something! Just my opinion of course..

Japan actually look a big price! Cameroon were God awful in the African Nations and I reckon Japan are actually a fairly useful side, from what i've seen in a couple of their games anyhow..

Gotta agree with HastGill1, Japan do look overpriced in their group games

The opening game is going to make or break my World Cup.

I think South Africa are a poor football team and wont get any points. Mexico done ok against both England and Holland and on those performances I think they are a good bet at anything around 6/4.

Uruguay done welll in their qualifying group and made the play-offs. Again I think 6/4 is a big price against a poorer team.

I know France havent been setting the heater alight in recent campagins and cheated Rep of Ireland out of qualifying but again 4/5 is a big price against a poor team.

I know taking in the occasion and refs, linesmen being open to hostile crowds with those annoying horns but does anybody think South Africa have a chance ??

I'm thinking of piling into Mexico but I'm now thinking of spliting my bets (ante post match odds) because if Mexico gub them 3 or 4 nil then price against other teams will fall.

ANybody any views ???

I agree with Cameroon being poor and am tempted to look more into the game v Denmark. Most bookies have them as the underdogs but I think this is due to Cameroons and Roger Millers antics in gone by comps.

I've got views mate but you won't like them and, to be honest, I hope they are wrong for your sake or it's gonna be a miserable world cup for you.

When I think opening games of major competitions , I think Argentina 0 Camaroon 1. I think France 0 Senegal 1 which may not have been the first game of the whole competition but I think it was France's first game. We're talking about the world champions and the euro champions being beaten by a couple of bags of shit who weren't playing in their own back yards. There have got to be better 6/4 shots on the first game surely.

Much wiser to split the three and go antepost and I'd beg you to go down that route rather than lump on game one. You can come back and call me a twat when Mexico win the first game but if they are as bad as you think they are, you'll be collecting on all three bets anyway

i've already backed Mexico in a few lines - and the more I think about it splitting the 'large' bet over 3 games is probably the way to go. time will tell though

I don't think I'll be chancing any first matches in the qualifying rounds as I like to get my eye in first and see who I'm betting for/against as I bet we ain't seen most of these teams in competitive play, I just don't trust friendlies, not enough to back a side on the back of one anyhow, never mind it being against the hosts.

i don't know how SA will fair but i do know they have some good players from the Kaiser cheifs and Orlando Pirates who looked pretty impressive last year in some mini tournament , Vodaphone challenge i think it was or summat like that, that was a pre cursor for the WC.
This first game is going to be massive for SA and I wouldn't like to back against them.

The one thing in Mexico's favour is the number of friendlies they have had in the run up to these finals, by the time it kicks off they will have had 12 since late February, thats a hell of a number.
Saying that SA are unbeaten in their last nine matches and will have played 7 friendlies since mid May by the time of the big KO, so they are packing them in.

I've got litle to spare on the opening group games due to having most of my money on other WC markets (semis and final will see my bigger bets too) but just scrolling down that list, and for no other reason than thinking those odds may be a shade big i've picked out these 5 for possible upsets...

Netherlands to win their group @1.61 (various) is the bet of the WC for me..I would have had them nearer 1.4 personally, really cant see them not topping that group..

As for the opening games..not a bloody clue! Look for value would be my only advice..wont be parting with much until I see some of the games..

I didn't realise there had been quite a bit of criticism of the World Cup ball. Just reading this:

Denmark's coach Morten Olsen has described the new World Cup football as "an impossible ball".
