Re: ATP Grand Prix Hassan

as per the other thread i was onna have a read of this-

Quote:
On the north coast of Africa a more genuine claycourt event takes place in the shape of the Grand Prix Hassan II.

The conditions in Morocco are certainly more like what we'll see over the coming two months in Europe.

The winners' list here is also more like what we expect of a clay tournament but this year's event hasn't attracted the strongest field and subsequently it's tough looking for a potential champion.

We've focused on looking for players with claycourt pedigree whose odds appear to be rather out of kilter and as a result we've picked out Spaniards Albert Montanes and Oscar Hernandez.

Montanes is currently sitting at a career-high of 35 in the rankings, which may seem rather odd given that he's won just three of 12 matches this season.

But the reason for that is his claycourt pedigree.

Turn back the clock 12 months and Montanes had begun the year in similarly disappointing fashion but once he set foot on the clay things turned around.

He went on to win his maiden ATP title in Amersfoort and also reached three other quarter-finals on the red dirt.

He's also been a finalist here before, in 2007, so odds of 16/1 look attractive.

However, you should be aware that his last match in Miami brought a withdrawal due to a thigh injury and for this reason we're keeping stakes small.

We're also not going to get carried away with Hernandez, a two-time quarter-finalist in Casablanca.

He's a solid clay performer, one who hardly wins a match on other surfaces, and will welcome a return to the dirt.

Unfortunately he's been placed in arguably the toughest section of the draw.

He'll open against Potito Starace, another player hoping that the surface switch will result in a change of fortune as he's been awful so far in 2009.

Then will come a second-round meeting with either former French Open champ Juan Carlos Ferrero or seventh seed Christophe Rochus.

It's not an easy path through and that helps explain odds of 28/1.

However, looking at things more positively if Hernandez does hit the ground running and fight his way through, those odds will look tasty indeed heading into the latter stages.

Our advice is again back him, but keep stakes to a minimum.
