Karlovic joins the 1000 aces club!!

Well done big Ivo . He will probably add another 150-200 before the end of the year to maybe reach 1,200. He needs a great run in at least one SLam to beat Goran's total which is frankly unbelievable

Still my favorite Croatian

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

TOKYO (TICKER) -- Ivo Karlovic of Croatia eclipsed the 1,000-ace plateau during his upset victory over Australian Lleyton Hewitt in the quarterfinals at the AIG Japan Open on Friday.

Karlovic, the No. 7 seed in Tokyo, registered 25 aces en route to a thrilling 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (10-8) triumph over the fourth-seeded Hewitt. He now has 1,019 aces this year.

Karlovic becomes just the fourth player to notch 1,000 aces in a season since the ATP started keeping it as an official statistic in 1991.

American Pete Sampras was the first player to accomplish the feat, logging 1,011 aces in 1993. Karlovic's countryman, Goran Ivanisevic, reached the mark four times during his career and holds the single-season record with 1,477 in 1996.

American Andy Roddick was the last player to eclipse 1,000, posting 1,019 in 2004.

Re: Karlovic joins the 1000 aces club!!

1000 aces and still not a tennis player in sight.

Karlovic is the Blackpool equivalent of the two headed lion or the bearded lady:
the guyŽs a freak.
HeŽll hit the record for aces and stay well beyond all others but when will he develop a backhand and become a proper tennis player?

You can lead a horse to water Peter....

I'd agree Karlovic is very limited. He'll hardly develope much more than he has now given his age. I can't imagine him breaking Goran's record. Its a siimply staggering number and Ivanisevic was a far better player who could go deep into a Slam which Ivo is unlikely to do anywhere excepting Wimbeldon. Still a fair achievemnt for such a limited player to be knocking on the top 20 door

Re: Karlovic joins the 1000 aces club!!

ShouldnŽt knock the guy too much, I guess.
He earns a decent living exploiting a niche that presents itself to his abilities.

And, if truth be told, I saw Carlos Moya turn the Croat round onto his backhand in some tournament last season which I and no doubt several others, found hugely amusing.

An entertainment he can be.

It worries me slightly that the circus clowns like Isner may become the norm rather than exception.
Should we breed people who can hit the ball at Mach speed from a great height then IŽll go watch the ladies.

Hi Peter

I noticed on your website that you have a list of TV stations showing tennis this week. Is there a mothership listing service somewhere showing what stations are carrying it? I usually tune to the national broadcasters with my satellite but it’s a bit pot luck sometimes.

youŽll have to explain that, Wittman.

The stations that show tennis have been a matter of exploration in my first year and pretty much routine in the second.

In other words I know which local broadcasters show home tournaments and I have a fair idea of which national broadcasters show the major stuff.

The Spaniards, the Dutch, the French and the Polish, for example, will all be in Madrid next week.

If you can point your parabol at Astra on 19,20 east right now youŽll see Stefan Koubek stumbling around court ..............

Re: Karlovic joins the 1000 aces club!!

Ok I think if I undertstand you rightly it is a matter of educated trial and error which is pretty much what I'm doing. Lazy man that I am I thought there might be a website somewhere that showed any broadcasters showing games on a daily basis. I watched 2 of the Stockholm games on the national Swedish channel ST1? yesterday but they were being shown on Swedish Eurosport as well which i couldn't tune to for some reason.

I'm afraid I'm burning my motor out whizzing through Hotbird and Astra searching for relatively obscure tennis events. I'm making a list of stations as I go but its a bit disorganised at the moment.

Re: Karlovic joins the 1000 aces club!!

OK
I posted the whole yearŽs live tennis events at a satellite forum in 2005\6 but I canŽt find it now.
However, I know where the locals and the nationals will be shown and IŽll post ém up as and when.

The internet is dominated by the Tennis Channel which serves the American viewer. Here in our part of the world we are more dependent on local broadcasters.

YouŽre burning your motor out between Astra and Hotbird (3 degrees) then you need to swap that crappy motor for a multi LNB set up.

You need to know about pirate viewing then IŽm pretty much the Gucci around these parts.

You might have been tuned into a feeder channel but Swedish National Television ( SVT1/2) certainly donŽt show tennis from either Stockholm or Bastaad.

Living as I do next door to the Swedes IŽd have to buy a sub from Viasat if I wanted the local Scandinavian stuff but pointing a dish over there is largely a waste of time given the miniscule amount of tennis shown.

Re: Karlovic joins the 1000 aces club!!

Good for you if you can get it but the Swedes have shown no tennis on the national network.

Neither did they last year.

Please let me know where youŽre watching this so I can tune in too.
