Breaking News...

Celtic manager Martin O'Neill has given his strongest suggestion yet that he could leave the club in the summer.

O'Neill again refused to deny mounting speculation that he is resigning to take some time out of football.

When asked where he would be next season, he said he would not say for sure, but added he "definitely wouldn't be going to another football club".

A top bloke. A throwback to the old days where enthusiasm and honour were the cornerstones of a Managers make up.

I think the guy is a top, top manager and given the funds would still be a match for Mourinho and Wenger.

Agree 100% - although i do think he needs to have a change at Celtic. Too many players on the wrong side of 30, without Bellamy we lack any real pace or anything and have to play route 1 football. Im expecting a good few signings in summer.

Re: Breaking News...

It is an almost certainty that Gordon Strachan will be the next Celtic manager. (snigger, snigger). This will be confirmed early next week.

Seriously though, I wish Martin O'Neil all the best. He is taking time out to care for his wife who has cancer. Good to see the man put his family first, very admirable if you ask me.

Re: Breaking News...

It's sad to see MON leaving because of his wife's health but looking at it in different ways, it might not be a bad thing for Celtic. Martin was rightly very highly respected as the manager and won the fans over in record time with a 6-2 defeat of Rangers in his first Old Firm match which was the catalyst for turning the football tide in Glasgow in devastating style in his first season in charge.

However, the team have been very stale looking this season and yesterday at Motherwell, the starting XI included 7 or 8 players over 30. Reaching the UEFA CUp final was a great achievement but it turned out to be a watershed of the wrong kind. The Board refused to fund some quality signings and performances have been in overall decline since. Martin can't be blamed for the actions of the Board but he was never all that loud in his protests and his own financial package is widely reported to have included a percentage of commercial profits.

The 1 year rolling contract he's been on was not popular with the fans either and in the last year in particular his relationship with the Scottish media has been at best strained. He's leaving the club in a state of an urgently needed makeover, wghich he acknowledges himself.

Personally I wouldn't go for Gordon Strachan. My choice would be Gus Hiddink of PSV, though whether he would be prepared to come to Glasgow now, after looking like being installed last time before Dermott Desmond brought MON in at the eleventh hour, I don't know. PSV have punched way above their weight this season and their performances against Milan in both legs of the CL semi final were a breath of fresh air. Hiddink's teams play with great flair, South Korea in the last World Cup and now PSV.

Wouldn't surprise me if Man Utd move for him. Whatever happens, Martin restored Celtic's respectability at home and in Europe. I wish him well and sincerely hope his wife's health improves. Things like this put the disappointment of losing the league the way Celtic did yesterday, firmly in perspective.

Re: Breaking News...

Agree with what your saying para in regards to MON leaving might be the best for both parties. I feel he has taking us as far as he can to be honest - he will always be a hero up here and will be sadly missed. Shows what a great man that he is willing to take time out to care for his wife and he deserves massive amount of respect for that.

As for his replacement - no chance with Hiddink, we missed out chance with him already. Celtic would be a big step down for him now, he will have much bigger clubs on offer. I wouldnt mind Strachan to be fair, he is a great personality and isnt too bad a manager to be fair. Not really anyone good available that i can think of. Bring back Wim Jansen!!

Whatever happens to MON i would like to wish him all the best and hope his wife gets better and everything becomes good with her.

Re: Breaking News...

O'Neill, who spends much of the time at his family home near Wycombe, missed much of last summer's tour to North America as a result of his wife's illness.

He also pulled out of BBC television's Euro 2004 coverage for the same reason.

Good to see a man doing that.

Re: Breaking News...

A great decision by the man and a decent decision for Celtic.

Great post Parahandy but as a previous respondent said

Hiddink is hot property. Celtic don't have a chance of winning the CL (due to money for transfers) so he wont join.

Re: Breaking News...

I dont think its money that would be the problem as he hasnt had money ever to buy players with really at most clubs. Celtic wouldnt be a challenge anymore to him, as he's proven what he can do with "smaller" clubs in the weaker leagues. With PSV he now has taking them as far as he can, but Celtic is a step back as he will be wanting to pit his wits against the top managers in the top leagues now i would imagine.

No argument with that Kiko. Man Utd has got to be a possibility, especially with foreign managers doing so well with big clubs in the Premiership.
