Newcastle United have parted company with manager Chris Hughton. The announcement came a day after United were beaten 3-1 at West Brom, a result which left them 11th in the Premier League table.
Hughton guided Newcastle back into the top flight in May after their relegation in the 2008-09 campaign. However, the club said on their official website they are seeking an individual with more managerial experience to take them forward. The statement added: "The board would like to place on record their thanks to Chris for his considerable efforts during the club's transition from Championship to Premier League club.
"Chris has shown exceptional character and commitment since being appointed manager in October 2009. The club wishes him well in the future. "The task of appointing a new manager now begins. An announcement will be made shortly regarding transitional arrangements pending the appointment of a successor." Speculation has been growing for weeks regarding Hughton's future, although the club revealed in October they would be looking to extend his contract in the new year in response to this. The defeat at The Hawthorns, after which Hughton kept his players in the dressing room for an hour, was the Magpies' seventh of a season that has so far seen them win just two games at home. However, these were a 5-1 win over local rivals Sunderland in October and a 6-0 triumph against Aston Villa back in August. They have registered wins at Everton and Arsenal this season under Hughton, but have picked up just two points from a possible 15 since the victory at the Emirates on 7 November. Hughton, who has been working without an assistant manager since Colin Calderwood joined Hibernian in October, is followed out of the St James' Park exit by goalkeeping coach Paul Barron.
Former Tottenham player and coach Hughton arrived at Newcastle from White Hart Lane in February 2008 as coach to then Magpies boss Kevin Keegan. He then served as caretaker manager when Keegan left in September 2008, before reverting to assistant boss when Joe Kinnear was appointed manager on a temporary basis. When Kinnear fell ill the following February, Hughton again stepped in, before assisting Alan Shearer and Iain Dowie as Newcastle were relegated. He was once again placed in caretaker charge in the summer of 2009, as owner Mike Ashley sought to sell the club, but the team started the Championship season so well he was given the role on a permanent basis in October of 2009. He went on to guide Newcastle to the Championship title with two games spare. |

Re: Chris Hughton sacked !
Hope they go down! How does the fat twat think he can get in how can do a better job? I believe I am right in saying Ashley has never made a loss in a transfer window since taking over the club..can you imagine that continuing with a new man in charge, think Newcastle fans get a bit of a bad press in that other supporters think they imagine their side is better than it is but I can't imagine many will be disappointed with the way the season has gone so far, what did he expect on a cheaply assembled squad? Champions League qualification? Pathetic.

Re: Chris Hughton sacked !
Ashley will never learn will he, I would never have given Hughton the job in the first place but to be fair to him he did a lot better job than I ever expected him to, and he deserved to be backed to the hilt this season financially so he could have a real go at making a decent team.
I just don't know where Newcastle will go from here as they've gone the 'big' manager route in the past and its not worked out, plus any manager coming in now will want money to spend, I have a feeling Newcastle may have a few bob in the bank and Ashley doesn't trust Hughton enough to spend it wisely, how he comes to that conclusiuon I don't know as big name managers in the past have wasted more dosh than anybody, I can't even think of a name that would suit Newcastle tell the truth , so the next appointment will be very Interesting. Hughton deserved better than that, he had the respect of his players , his biggest problem was not having enough strength in depth as Saturdays result shown when Barton and Nolan were missing, without a lot of Cash every manager they appoint will have the same problem. |

Re: Chris Hughton sacked !
this my team and i'm fucking angry. how can we sack the man who the players play for and cruised the championship. with a slightly better squad he could have had us challenging for europe and I was confident of a sensible mid-table place first year back in prem.don't know what ashley and his fuckin southern mafia have been snorting with their fuckin cocktails. you can't just give someone the shove without a plan. he must have somebody in mind. god help us if we have to endure pardew, curbishley or any of the other second tier shit managers who are up their as favourites... man this fuckin depressing ![]() |

Re: Chris Hughton sacked !
Personally i'd have thought Curbishley was just the type of bloke who'd be the right appointment, but he's been out of it a while so thats probably a fair point. Mid tables about right I'd guess, I never thought they'd be involved in the dogfight, only on the edges......looking at that shite Villa have got more chance of getting involved

Re: Chris Hughton sacked !
Absolutely disgraceful sacking him, and I'm not just saying that because he wore the green, he was doing as good as expected if not better with that team, watch them slide down the table now!
I do not agree with Rob44 comments though, nothing wrong with the so called second tier managers, who are local, its about time to stop these foriegn arseholes, the likes of Avram Grant, and that Mancini, is he better than Mark Hughes! but I suppose City are not a good example..they have not won anything since Elvis died ![]() |
