Tommy Burns RIP

Quote:
Celtic legend Tommy Burns has died at the age of 51 after losing his long-running battle against cancer.

Burns had been undergoing treatment in both Glasgow and France in recent weeks after being diagnosed in March of this year. In 2006, the former Scotland midfielder received treatment for skin cancer but it returned two years later.

He began playing for Celtic in 1974 and was the club's first-team coach before being granted leave.
A statement from Celtic said: "Tommy, a true Celtic Legend and wonderful man will be sadly missed by us all. Clearly, our thoughts are very much with Tommy's wife Rosemary and his family at this extremely difficult time."

Re: Tommy Burns RIP

Aye, a real shame, RIP Tommy.

He was still playing when I first went to watch Celtic, some midfield then, TB, Paul McStay, Murdo MacLoed and Davie Provan.

Great career at Celtic. Liked his comment about the time he had agreed to sign for Killie towards the end of his career. Celtic had a mid season friendly v Ajax. TB said he didn't want to cry during the game so he went out to warm up beforehand and spent 20 mins running about crying his eyes out as he knew he would never play for Celtic again. A true Celtic man.

Did well with Killie and then back at Celtic as manager, bar the brillance of Andy Goram, would have stopped Smiths 9 in a row Rangers side. 1 defeat all season and we still couldn't win the league.

51 year old, just terrible.

Re: Tommy Burns RIP

yeah it is a shame, i always thought he was a bit older than 51, always seemed like a fair minded guy when speaking on tv.

He said when he dies during his spell as Celtic manager he wanted on his Gravestone "Andy Goram broke my heart"

So true aswell as if it wasn't for Goram he could have went on to become a great manager. Brought in some absolute quality like Di Canio.

I hear many guys die and they are praised for being good men etc when i think half of them were absolute cnuts but Tommy was a great guy.

Actually heard a story about him from my manager a few weeks ago when we were discussing him being ill.

Tommy was scheduled to do an end of season talk at the annual dinner/dance my team has every year.

It ended up the league was going to the last game of the season so everyone thought Tommy would bail seeing as it was the eve of a huge day for him.

But props to him. He travelled up, gave his talk then went home that night again all the way from Glasgow and 3 hours driving back and forth. Shows what a top man he is.

I will always remember him for his Celtic manager spell as this was at the height of me growing up and was when i was into my football the most. Had a great footballing side and unbelievable that they went the whole season losing only 1 game and still couldn't win the league.

Celtic man through and through and an absolute legend at the club

RIP

Re: Tommy Burns RIP

Bit of a shock this, with it going quiet I guess I thought he was beating it. When blokes like this go that you remember playing it makes you feel old all of a sudden

Re: Tommy Burns RIP

Just back from Celtic Park there - I didn't want to leave.

Good to see some Rangers fans turn up too. Every time one of them stepped forward to lay down a scarf or top they were applauded by the several hundred Celtic fans.

Few men could bring the two together.

God bless you Tommy. Your legend will live long.
