The 10 worst football managers

Just read this article in today's Observer Sport Monthly , i agree that Souness deseerves to be no 1 , number 8 was interesting , they could have made a whole article on that.

full article
The 10 worst football managers | Football | The Observer

Bad managers are two a penny - every club in the land could muster a lengthy list all their own. For this 10, then, run-of-the-mill ineptitude wasn't enough. We needed to look beyond the obvious, one-off disasters of Les Reed at Charlton and Mike Walker at Everton, or Chris Hutchings's brief stays at Bradford and Wigan. Those whose sustained failures came after longer spells of success - Venables, Eriksson - were also reluctantly overlooked. I'm sad to have to miss out the CVs of Billy McNeill and Dave Bassett, both in charge of two clubs relegated in one season. Instead we were looking for incompetence on a grander scale: the maverick philosophies that were always destined for disaster, the individual actions that had the most devastating effects on the clubs they managed, and the inflated reputations in need of reappraisal. In short, 10 outstanding contributions in the field of failure
1.Graeme Souness
2.Egil Olsen
3.Hristo Stoichkov
4.Ossie Ardiles
5.David Platt
6.Glenn Roeder
7.Alan Ball
8.The England 1986 World Cup Squad
9.Claude Anelka
10.Jim Fallon

Re: The 10 worst football managers

Pleased to see David Platt is in there.

Instead of making the mistake of jumping straight into management after hanging up his boots as a player, he spent years travelling around Europe and spending time at the knees of some of the world's most experienced football managers (including Arsen Wenger).

Studying them closely and making copious notes, his hope was to build up a blueprint that would make his own management career one of the greatest.

Time well spent there then

Re: The 10 worst football managers

here's the clip re the england squad
8 The England 1986 World Cup Squad

It's as if a curse was placed on the 22 players Bobby Robson took to Mexico 86 - they could fill a book on the most dreadful management records of modern times. From Peters Shilton and Reid through Terry Fenwick to Alvin Martin and John Barnes, there are enough failed bosses to field an XI and three subs. Captain, of course, would be Marvel himself, Bryan Robson. Surely the only manager to be effectively sacked (when Terry Venables came to Middlesbrough mid-season) but still turn up for work. The phrase 'left by mutual consent' could be written on his gravestone.

Think you're being rather too kind on John Barnes, Terry Fenwick and Terry Butcher by not putting them in bold, Traeth

Glenn Roeder is an absolutely absurd inclusion.

Re: The 10 worst football managers

Aha!! Still don't remember him

Goalkeeper 78-86
6ft 2" 13st 2lbs
b.Ipswich,9th August 1958
Debut v Ipswich (h) 18/11/78

Career: Witts University(Johannesburg)
UNITED Jan 78
contract cancelled Sept 87
Kaiser Chiefs (South Africa) 88

It was something of a coincidence that Gary should make his League debut
against Ipswich Town as his father,Roy, also a goalkeeper, had earlier made
300 appearances for the Portman Road Club. Bailey Snr. won three
championships, The Third Div South in 57, Secound Div in 61 and the League
Championship in 62. The benefits of parental coaching were quickly evident
after Gary had left his home in South Africa to journey to OLD TRAFFORD.
Quote from Ethel Sleith SA jamie@global.co.za
"An interesting point to note is how Gary came to OT. As a young lad,
about 17/18 I think, he and a friend packed their bags and arrived at
the Theatre of Dreams. Quite simply, Gary knocked on the door, said,
"I'm a goalkeeper, give me a trial", and the rest, as they say, is history."

Blessed with an imposing physical presence and vocal, confident attitude, he
quickly established himself as first-choice goalkeeper, appearing in a
Wembley final at the end of his debut season. Whilst the first FA Cup final
ended in disapointment, Arsenal winning 3-2, he was successful two
subsequent finals in 83 and 85. Gary had an identifiable weakness when it
came to leaving his line and dealing with crosses, but he was still capped
by England `B`, England Under-21(14 caps), and twice at full international
level. It was a training injury with the England squad in Feb 86 which
brought a premature end to his first class career. A severe knee problem
which failed to respond to treatment saw him leave OT in Sept 87 at an age
when the blond goalkeeper was just approaching the peak years for his
profession. Returning to SA he was eventually able to resume his career with
Kaiser Chiefs.

Appearances:
FL 294 - 0 g
FAC 31 - 0 g
FLC 28 - 0 g
EUR 20 - 0 g Total: 373 apps 0 goals

You mean Christian Gross?

I have more respect for people that actually have a pop at it and find out they arent very good, than the ex players who go straight to pundit work after hanging up their boots and slag gaffers off every week on MOTD. You know people like Hansen, Shearer, Linekar etc.
