The whole Shevchenko/Chelsea story looks to be reaching a climax. They seem to have been courting the Ukranian for what seems like forever. Looks like we might finally have an end to the Saga.

AC Milan striker Andriy Shevchenko has revealed he is considering leaving the club this summer for family reasons. The 29-year-old, who has been linked with a move to Chelsea, read a statement confirming reports he may leave the San Siro after seven years.

"It's pointless trying to hide things from the fans," he said.

"I'm thinking of leaving because of my family. I spoke to the president and we discussed the possibility. No definite decision has been made."

The Ukraine international said he would call another press conference when he had decided where his future lies.


But the striker wanted to clarify that he had not fallen out with his team-mates or coach Carlo Ancelotti.



"This has nothing to do with my relationship with Milan, there has always been a great deal of affection, as with my team mates and coaches," added Shevchencko.

Earlier on Friday, Milan president Silvio Berlusconi appeared to drop a hint as to Shevchenko's destination.

Speaking to a group of students in front of the prime minister's office, the former Italy prime minister is reported by the website of Gazzetta dello Sport to have said: "Do you know that Shevchenko wants to leave? He wants to go to England."

Shevchenko, a former European Footballer of the Year, joined Milan from Dynamo Kiev in 1999 and has scored 19 Serie A goals this season.

He will captain Ukraine at the World Cup this summer in Germany.

Maybe the stress of not winning the league (again) is too much. Maybe Abramovich has lobbed so much money his way that he just cant resist. Who knows. Cant see how moving to England would solve his family problems? Surely they all speak Italian and are settled there after 7 years with Milan? Maybe his wife is from Tooting.

Have to say this would be a frightening prospect for the rest of the clubs if Chelsea were to get Shevchenko.

In Mourinho's time at Chelsea what they have lacked is a real world class striker who can play the lone striker role well.

Drogba has done reasonable i guess but he misses far too many chances for my liking and tries to do too much on his own.

In Shevchenko you have a great finisher who leads the line well adn creates goals out of nothing.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is expecting a fight from AC Milan in his bid to sign striker Andriy Shevchenko. Chief executive Peter Kenyon confirmed on Sunday that the club want to sign the Ukraine international - who has said he is thinking of leaving Milan.

Mourinho said: "I cannot say that Shevchenko does not interest me, but AC Milan are a very powerful club.

"They don't need to sell players in order to buy good players. It's going to be very difficult.

Mourinho added: "To improve the fantastic squad we have, you can go in two directions - young players you can work with, improve and have success in a couple of years, or the best players in the world."

Mourinho have also been linked to Argentina World Cup striker Carlos Tevez.


Mourinho recently travelled to watch play for Corinthians and Tevez, 22, is convinced he is on the brink of a move to Stamford Bridge.

"Chelsea intend to take me," he said.

"It's difficult to distance myself from them because they have shown a lot of affection towards me and my family.

"He's (Mourinho) looking at what's there. There must have been a reason to come to see me play."

But Kenyon said: "We have looked at him and he is a good player and does a good job but all the reports of him being linked with us are not right. I would be surprised to see him in a Chelsea shirt next season."

Well Shevchenko ain't stayingat Milan. Leaving Italy he says and he is going to command a fee around £30 million and there aren't that many clubs that can afford to pay that so Chelsea certainly does look the best bet.

Still a bit pricey for a side getting close to the wrong side of 30 isn't it?

Still, theymight be splashing the cash but you have to admire Chelsea for bringing 2 of the worlds best players to the EPL.

Going to realy enjoy watching Ballack, and Shevchenko if they do end up getting him.

Chelsea to open Shevchenko talks

Shevchenko scored 19 goals in Serie A last season

AC Milan will hold talks with Chelsea after Andriy Shevchenko confirmed he will leave the Italian club. Shevchenko, 29, on Friday met Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani to discuss his future, and afterwards said: "I'm leaving for family reasons.

"It wasn't a problem of relations and there is no economic problem."

Galliani said: "This is certainly the most painful divorce since I have been at Milan. We will begin negotiations with Chelsea and it will not be easy."

Shevchenko has an American wife and it is understood that they want their son Jordan to learn English.

Galliani, who is in charge of the day-to-day operations at Milan, added: "It's a victory of the English language over the Italian language.

"I've tried to convince him to stay - even one minute prior to the press conference."

Milan offered Shevchenko a contract extension until 2011.

"My wish is that the club can evaluate my transfer," added the Ukraine international.

"Of course I am saddened because I have seen the looks on the faces of the fans and because of the many messages I have received."

Shevchenko's wife, Kristen Pazak, is understood to be friends with the partner of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.

"My wife has nothing to do with this," said the striker. "We decided together for the best interests of our family.

"I don't speak English, my wife does not speak Ukrainian - the only language we have in common at the moment is Italian.

"The only way to be able to teach our children our love that we have for them is the English language."

Shevchenko joined Milan from Dynamo Kiev in 1999 and is the second highest scorer in the club's behind Gunnar Nordahl with 173 goals.

He scored 19 goals in 28 Serie A matches this season and also netted nine goals in the Champions League.

Shevchenko will captain Ukraine at the World Cup finals in Germany this summer.
