A football strip worn by Italian team Inter Milan is at the centre of a legal row after a lawyer claimed it offended "Muslim sensibilities".
| | | | The 'offensive' Inter Milan strip | Players wore the new strip – a white shirt with large red cross on it – in a Champions League match last month against Turkish team Fenerbahçe to celebrate the club’s centenary.
But a Turkish lawyer, Baris Kaska, took exception to the "Crusader-style" cross which he said symbolised "Western racist superiority over Islam".
He claimed the offending shirt reminded Turks of an emblem of the Christian order of the Knights Templar.
Mr Kaska, who specialises in European law, has lodged a complaint in a local court against the club.
He is seeking damages, and is appealing to Uefa to annul the match, which Inter Milan won 3-0.
Mr Kaska told the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia: "That cross only brings one thing to mind - the symbol of the Templar Knights.
"It made me think immediately of the bloody days of the past. While I was watching the game I felt profound grief in my soul."

He said the court had contacted both Uefa and Fifa to convey his demand that Inter Milan should be "heavily fined for displaying an offensive symbol".
Inter Milan officials are reportedly "astounded" at the controversy.
They have pointed out that a red cross on a white background was the symbol of the city of Milan, and that many Italian football clubs have incorporated the cross on their shirts.

The aforementioned coat of arms of Milan;
Still, if you think the Turkish muslims are offended, can you imagine what the Scottish muslims must be going through?!

Re: Inter Milan Kit - Offensive to Muslims
Apparently the Barcelona badge is the latest piece of sporting kit to be deemed offensive by a certain section of society!
Quote:
| Barcelona Changes Badge to Avoid Offending Muslims | | |
| According to the Catalan newspaper La Vanguardia, the Spanish football club Barcelona is altering its famous badge in some Arab countries in order to avoid offending Muslims.
The badge is especially altered in Saudi Arabia or Algeria, where the Barcelona shirts are being sold without the red cross of Saint George, the patron saint of the Catalan region which Barca claims to represent, the La Vanguardia newspaper found in a private investigation.
The badge, which was created in 1906, features a single vertical red line in Saudi Arabia and Algeria, due to the fact that there, the red cross represents the symbol of the brutal mediaeval Christian crusades against Islam.
La Vanguardia, in its Saturday edition, expressed its indignation as well as shock, asking the officials of the club to respond to the situation.
The investigation is expected to cause some debates among Barca fans, as it would be the second time in the clubs history when the badge is being altered. The first time was during the Franco period (1939-1975), when Barca had to remove from their badge the red and yellow stripes of the banned Catalan regional flag, due to the fact that the regime did not approve any signs of Catalan autonomy or separatism.
Only when Franco was close to his death the club received permission to put the red and yellow stripes back onto their badge.
The emerging scandal comes after the problematic episode encountered by Italian champions Inter Milan in September, when they played in white shirts with a big cross on the front against the Turkish club Fenerbahce.
The Turkish media harshly criticized the Italian team, saying that they used those particular shirts in order to offend Muslim sentiments. Turkish lawyer Baris Kaska requested UEFA sanctions for Inter over charges of racist superiority of a religion. |

Re: Inter Milan Kit - Offensive to Muslims
That has been in the crest for years, so why only now does it cause offence? Same with AC Milan, I'm sure their crest features the George's cross. Infact, I'm sure I read somewhere that the flag of the city of Milan itself features it.
Do we erase our history or censor what has been there for centuries, because some jumped up muslim lawyer is offended?
Bunch of cunts.

Re: Inter Milan Kit - Offensive to Muslims
The flag of Milan is exactly the same as the St. Georges, but is know as the flag of St. Ambrose, who was the Bishop of Milan between 374 and 397.
There are a few cities and countries across Europe, even Worldwide, who use the St George's Cross as part of their flag or coat of arms. Are they all expected to censor themselves when playing against Islamic opposition?
Cnuts!

Re: Inter Milan Kit - Offensive to Muslims
This looks like it's been blown out of all proportion - it isn't the whole muslim population, it's one attention-seeking lawyer.
I'd be interested to see how many of those (not on here, necessarily, but just in general) who are up in arms about this whole thing feel the same way about hindus using swastikas. Do they think "fair enough, they were using the symbol long before the nazis came along, why should they give it up just because of what it's now come to represent to many people", or do they think "you can't use swastikas, that's a nazi symbol"? I'm prepared to bet there'd be quite a few thinking the latter.

Re: Inter Milan Kit - Offensive to Muslims
I'm sure there would be RC but only until it was pointed out to them that, as you say, they were using the swastika for hundreds of years before Hitler was even thought of and that it was a religious symbol rather than what it came to represent later. Any right-minded person would surely have to come to the conclusion that hindus have the right to use the symbol as they wish.
Of course, they might not like to wear one on their holidays in Jerusalem
That would cause a moral dilema.

Re: Inter Milan Kit - Offensive to Muslims
I'm sure you're right, ODM. But then I'm equally sure that the Turkish lawyer doesn't really believe there's anything wrong with the Inter shirt either. I'd say he thought something along the lines of - "hmm, how can I drum up some more business - I know, I'll make a frivolous complaint, doomed to failure from the very beginning, but one which will get the headlines, and make me immensely popular among the muslim population who see me making a stand for their feelings".
51,300 Google hits you know, for the name "Baris Kaska". Any bets on the number there were before he made the complaint? I don't know the answer, by the way, but I'd hazard a guess that it's somewhere in 3 figures rather than 5.

Well, good point here I must say....ı am living in Turkey, a Muslim country as you know; but this was seen just a newspaper headline, and not taken very seriously here...
I might say that you care this guy more than people here...
As for me, this case is ridicilous, nothing more to talk about..But the attorney seems to draw attentiion that he wish
