BBC Sports Personality of the Year - 2007

Always been a big fan of this - got to get in early and use a bit of foresight to do well..... You can't peak too early IMO. You need a sport or an event that people will still be talking about in November/December time really.

I will place some decent long-term bets on this and hopefully layoff at a later date. Had Darren Clarke at 33's last year and layed at odds-on quite successfully.

I cant find the odds because I am at work, if someone could post them up that would be mint.

Early thoughts

Lewis Hamilton has to be a decent sniff doesnt he? The F1 season ends at a good time as far as voting is concerned. If the lad can keep it up, he has to be a decent poke IMO.

Trying to think of the 'sporting calendar' to judge who might be in the running. No Olympics, no International footy competition etc

We do have an Athletics World Championships in August/September time - that could provide us with a winner. Liz McColgan won in the 'year' of the world championships - 1991.

I like the look of our cyclists at the moment. They are truly world class athletes....

Maybe Vicky Pendleton for the women and Chris Hoy for the men would be worth an outside punt.

Chris Boardman was big news when he was winning for GB years ago wasnt he......

Hmmmmmm

Here's the winners since 1990

1990: Paul Gascoigne (footballer)
1991: Liz McColgan (long-distance runner)
1992: Nigel Mansell (Formula One racing driver)
1993: Linford Christie (100m sprinter)
1994: Damon Hill (Formula One racing driver)
1995: Jonathan Edwards (triple jumper)
1996: Damon Hill (Formula One racing driver)
1997: Greg Rusedski (tennis player)
1998: Michael Owen (footballer)
1999: Lennox Lewis (boxer)
2000: Steve Redgrave (rower)
2001: David Beckham (footballer)
2002: Paula Radcliffe (long-distance runner)
2003: Jonny Wilkinson (rugby union player)
2004: Kelly Holmes (middle-distance runner)
2005: Andrew Flintoff (cricketer)
2006: Zara Phillips (three-day eventer)

Re: BBC Sports Personality of the Year - 2007

Sportsmen tend to be voted for because of a non-club based achievement. If you look at Gazza/Owen/Becks/Wilkinson - its international level thats wins plaudits.

Consequently I dont think any of our footballers/rugby players/cricketers will challenge.

Given his recent form and his press persona - Justin Rose might be a decent pop. Nice lad, liked by the media and on a decent run. The press would love to whip up a favourable story about him wouldnt they if he were to win a major.

Re: BBC Sports Personality of the Year - 2007

Beth Tweddle ( Gymnastics ) 50/1

Chris Hoy ( Cycling ) 66/1

Bradley Wiggins ( Cycling ) 66/1 - Wiggins and Hoy are Part of a world class GB cycling team at the moment. Blitzed the recent championships in Manchester and Majorca (or was it Mallorca?). Only problem may be lack of press attention....

Wouldnt mind having a look at those on betfair when I get the chance and seeing their odds with them.

We have a lack of truly world class sportsmen and the ones we do have dont have a showcase event to propel themselves into the limelight. Doesnt matter how good Rooney is (allegedly) - he is never going to win Sports Personality unless England do well.

Anyone know much about our athletes? They're the ones that interest me. I might start having to watch Grandstand from now on and do a bit of revision.

I wouldnt mind a pop on Andy Murray but at 5/2 - no thanks. I would rather stick it on an athlete at 100/1 say and lay off after they have a storming World Championships.

Re: BBC Sports Personality of the Year - 2007

Anyone that fancies Ronnie to win the Embassy may as well stick a few quid on him to win Sports Personality of the year @ Ronnie O' Sullivan ( Snooker ) 50/1.

If he does win in Sheffield, those odds would surely tumble. Would make a great bet with a view to laying off in the event of victory.

A successful sportsman, that people actually like. Winning combination.

Re: BBC Sports Personality of the Year - 2007

Matt Skelton (50/1) and Craig Bellamy (66/1) are my two against the field

That really is a shit shit line up is it not.

If it was for achievements, Calzaghe, should get it, especially if he hammers one or two of the better Yanks this summer/autumn. Then again, someone who competes maybe 3 times tops a year winning it??

Ronnie, fair enough he is decent odds but bar the World Championships, no one really gives a fuck about snooker. He's too much of a cunt, or even dare I say it, someone with a personality, to win it.

Seriously, if Hamilton continues as he has started in F1, he has a great chance. But then have the previous F1 drivers who won it not actually been the World Champions? Does Murray deserve it without a Grand Slam to his name?

Re: BBC Sports Personality of the Year - 2007

I think you can dismiss anyone associated with an english team sport as the english football team has no chance of winning anything (even matches sometimes) the cricket side need a miracle to win the world cup and not even derren brown could convince me that the rugby union side will do anything.
That's the first part the second part is to assess what they need do to win.

Murray needs to win a major or at least have a big big wimbledon and lose to federer in the final, hamilton is hard to dismiss but he won't win f1 and might be good value for young sportsstar if they do that. Rose would need to win a major, calazghe clearly needs to walk on the moon as he does not yet have it. Same for Hatton, radcliffe seems unlikely. I think khan seems good value at 20/1 he's popular, on terrestial tv, and if he can get himself a world title shot by the end of the year this could be his year. worth keeping an eye on his price and his opponents list.

Re: BBC Sports Personality of the Year - 2007

Murray has just broken into the top ten in the world at 19. A decent showing at Wimbledon and it's a straight fight between him and Hamilton in my view.

Re: BBC Sports Personality of the Year - 2007

I reckon the public is clammering for a successful British sporting icon. So much of the media coverage with regards to English sport in particular is concerned with sportsmen being overpaid or pissing about and not acting professionally. Anyone that keeps their head down, does well at their sport and is reasonably friendly has a decent chance of winning it.

I think Khan is a cert for the title some day, just a case of when. I think it is more down to his schedule than his ability. A big title fight on Terrestrial is a winner as far as the public is concerned. Any idea who Khan is down to fight this year?

I am more interested anyway in longshots to lay off at a later date. Andy Murray may well win but I dont think he's such a good pop at those odds. Plus I hear today he is injured. Hopefully the first of many this year.

Wouldnt mind seeing the odds for a decent distance runner we have, Mo Farrah the lads name is.

Comes accross very well in interviews and should be set for a decent world champs.

Don't write off the England cricket team. Especially if they win in Barbados today.

Gerrard could be worthy bet @ 21.00.

Liverpool win CL and that price will be slashed.

  • Was just thinking there, the best type of "fuck off " is the following; You`re playing astro, 5 a side, someone shouts "handball" and the "fuck off" response is fucking class.
