Fish'O'Mania XVI 2009

Ok, it's no hotdog eating competition but there may be an angler or two with an interest. I've already scribbled down Dave Roberts as my dark horse:

Bet365 odds

Each-way 1/5 1-2-3

Matt Hall 5.00
Nathan Watson 5.50
Mick Bull 5.50
Dave Swain 9.00
Rob Wootton 11.00
Mark Stevens 13.00
Ed Warren 15.00
Dave Roberts 15.00
Chris Vandervliet 17.00
Adam Richards 21.00
Andy Power 26.00
Mark Tullet 26.00
Tony Robertson 26.00
Pete Goodwin 26.00
Paul Christie 26.00 T
Tony Curd 34.00

DAVE Roberts has become the latest man to qualify for the 2009 PartyPoker.com Fish'O'Mania final after dominating the 13th heat.

Roberts, an automotive engineer from Hereford, lead the way throughout the majority of the five hours of qualifying competition at Cudmore Fisheries on Wednesday, catching 59lbs 2oz of carp from peg three.

He will now be hoping to repeat the feat at the same location as the final, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports, will be staged at Cudmore on Saturday, July 18.

On Wednesday, the combination of a massive overnight drop in air pressure, heavy rainfall and the final throes of the spawning period put paid to the big weights everyone was anticipating on this usually prolific venue.

It left many anglers in some areas literally fishing for bites. That said the final result produced an extremely tight finish with less than 7lbs separating the top five anglers and, with the exception of one pool, 35lbs was the lowest section winning weight.

The Arena Pool was not fished this time as it is the venue for the Grand Final so the Tara Pool was therefore used for the first time housing two sections.

Many of the anglers were tipping it to produce the winner even though it not normally match-fished and how right they were.

Runner-up Wayne Rooke, who was nine pegs away from Roberts, weighed 58lbs 4ozs of carp to 5lbs taken shallow on the pole and pellet waggler.

Third place was shared between Terry Naulls from East Yorkshire and Robert Cooksey from Dudley with a weight of 52lbs 10ozs. Naulls, a member of the England squad for anglers with disabilities annihilated New Pool 1 and Robert was top weight on New Pool 4, just beating Phil Ringer who weighed 52lbs 8ozs.

That is actually all Greek to me. Is it Winrew who's into fishing?

I remember betting on this in-running last year (Stan James and Bet365 will probably be most accommodating this year) but it really depends on the peg.

Matt Hall ahead of Adam Richards by about a kilo and ahead of everybody else by a fair bit.

There's still three hours of fishing though!
