Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest 2009

Pinnaclesports

Well it's the blue riband event of the competitive eating world - the one and only Nathans Hot Dog Eat Contest. An annual 4th July event held at Coney Island, it has been dominated by the two true heavyweights of the COmpetitive Eating World, Joey Chestnut and Kobayashi

Kobayahsi is definately the legend having won this tournament 6 times between 2001 and 2006, but Chestnut is the all-american hero who has won the tournament the past 2 years breaking the world record and taking the mustard yellow belt. However last year it was the first event using new ten-minute time limit and first tie and eatoff since 1980. Chestnut and Kobayashi tied for first with 59 in regulation. In overtime Chestnut was the first to finish a plate of five...

Only one confrontation has taken place between them since when Chestnut and Kobayashi went up against each other in another eating contest, this time to determine who could devour the most number of pizzas. Kobayashi beat out Chestnut!

An extract from that said event..

Quote:
"I'm a little bummed," Chestnut said after the Pizza Hut sponsored event. "There's nobody I like beating more than him, he pushes me harder than anybody."

Kobayashi won six straight Nathan's titles before being dethroned by Chestnut two years ago, 66-63.

"I wanted to prove that I'm champion," Kobayashi said. "A champion will stand up to any battle."

He said he would go for another Fourth of July hot dog championship and then probably retire. Chestnut will be ready and waiting on Coney Island.
Certainly it will be a tight affair. Although myself (and a few others on this forum) have won a fair few quid on back Chestnut over the past couple of years, I somehow feel that Kobayashi wants to retire on top and coupled with his recent pizza eating psychological victory, the value could well be with Kobayashi at 2.19..

Not bet yet, but my gut feeling tells me that Koby could win an historic seventh..

I am also fairly confident that the the 60 hotdogs in 10 minutes should be broken (they tied at 59 last year), but the bookies may have marked the price right at 1.758

Robert Tuchman, a crazed sports fan and successful entrepreneur, inspired by his love for sport, has insider tips foranyone attending the eating contest. Tuchman's recently published The 100 Sporting Events You Must See Live ranks the top sporting events all over the world, with Nathan's Hot-Dog Eating Contest coming in at number seventy-three.
Apparently ranked just below The US Masters, but well above the Australian Open..

Man this event is BIG !!

Live on ESPN - Apparently in Hi-def, so you can see every particle of projectile vomit...

Bodog have a lot of markets on this on their US version of the site, though whether we can bet there is a different matter.

Speciality and Other Sports Betting at Bodog Sportsbook

I'm suprised they still put odds up for this after we cleaned them out two years ago. Well, as far as their measly limits would let us anyway!

Re: Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest 2009

Nice one Beanie..

I do have a strange (call it 'gut' ) feeling that Kobi could upset the odds this year.. Don't know why - maybe it's the fact that he beat him recently in the ('Pizza Hut sponsored') Pizza eating tourney.. Not sure if that is a good guide as the technique to eating hotdogs is a lot different to Pizza, and to be fair Chestnut is the World Record holder at the said food. That said Koby always takes him to the wire and maybe he feels it's his destiny this year..? And he still needs to win it for his sadly deceased *sob* mother....

Re: Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest 2009

Ladbrokes have priced this up with outright odds, some match-bets and a few specials:

Who will eat the most hotdogs?

Takeru Kobayashi 5/4
Joey Chestnut 'evens'
Tim Janus 8/1
Patrick Bertoletti 16/1
Eric Booker 25/1
Bob Shoudt 33/1
Gravy Brown 50/1
Hall Hunt 50/1
Juliet Lee 50/1
Mongo Marquez 50/1
Erik Denmark 66/1
Rich LeFevre 66/1
Sean Gordon 66/1
Crazy Legs Conti 100/1
Jim Reeves 100/1
Wing Cong Collins 100/1
Pete Davekos 150/1

* Takeru Kobayashi 'evens' vs. Joey Chestnut 8/11
* Eric Denmark 1/2 vs. Crazy Legs Conti 6/4
* Hall Hunt 4/7 vs. Juliet Lee 5/4

Now this is the interesting bit...the specials:

I think that the 9/10 on 'over 57.5' hotdogs that the winner consumes looks an absolute steal whilst the winning margin to be 'under 3.5' hotdogs at 'evens' (for betting purposes one assumes using last year's result as an example that they'd also include overtime which was 66-63 to Chestnut over Kobayashi rather than the 59-59 tie between the pair of 'em) is an extremely tempting bet as is the 7/4 for the record (60 or more hotdogs) to be beaten.

Maximum bets of £66.66 and £60 only though weirdly but hey, I've bet maximum bets on the 9/10 and 'evens' respectively.

The only niggle is that this doesn't state whether it includes overtime or not. Pinnacle's odds as highlighted by trickrick states "NO!". Ladbrokes doesn't stipulate either way but one assumes they won't include overtime either.

Seems my fears about Bodog are unfounded but hey, I'm not too fussed that I don't bet there any more.

THE WEIGH-IN!! LOL!

Arch rivals square off at Nathan's hot dog-eating weigh-in

Re-reading the corresponding thread from last year: Kobayashi had surgery on his jaw and still finished off 59 hotdogs in ten minutes only losing IN overtime, AND now he's recently won the pizza-eating contest!? Unless Joey (or someone completely unheralded) somehow 'psyches' him out surely nothing will faze Kobayashi!?

The value bet IS with Kobayashi.

Re: Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest 2009

Gotta follow those same bets Stereo..

Even we're missing something stupidly simple, or Laddies have misjudged this.. Over 57.5 is a steal and surely there won't be more than a couple of hotdogs between them !

Surely we've got a couple of decent bets there

Re: Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest 2009

Wow, they are strange prices and cant disagree with anything above. Over 57.5 looks like an absolute steal at 1.9...they have stepped up their game each year since Chestnutt came on the scene and with better preparation this year I dont see why it will be any different.

I cant bring myself to back against Chestnutt mind you - he's so much bigger than Koba that I still think he holds the edge and if in good 'eating' shape then its his to win, although I'd love Koba to win it one final time.

Max on the overs for me.

Re: Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest 2009

Yep - it looks like we're all maxxed out on it going to be over 57 hotdogs. The price has now shifted from 1.90 to 1.83.. Still don't understand the pricing by ladbrokes. Pity we can't lump more on..

You can still get evens on a winning margin of upto 3.5 hotdogs. Barring a vomit induced overtime meltdown (if overtime actually counts), surely Kobi and Chestnut will be neck and neck throughout like they have in the past... I'm maxxed on that too..

It is certainly gonna be close and to pick a winner is tough. I do have a feeling for Kobi this year, but Chestnut could well have the patriotic motivation on the 4th July to pull it out..

Laddies must have realised now as they suddenly go 1.60 for over 57.5..
