Today's
Bettingzone Market News:
1200: William Hill say that the
Crewe & Nantwich by-election is the most one-sided in political betting history.
"We have taken in total just £45 - one bet of £20 and another of £25 for Labour to win this by-election and we face a six figure payout if - when - the Tories win," explained Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe.
"It is the most one-sided by-election ever in betting terms. The Conservatives have gone from 4/5 favourites when the book opened to 1/33 and we have taken bets of up to £40,000 a time for them.
"They are now virtually unbackable favourites at 1/33, Labour are 10/1 and the Lib Dems 20/1."
Hills make the Lib Dems 8/1 to finish ahead of Labour who are 1/20 to finish ahead of the Lib Dems.
And with a Conservative victory seeming to be a foregone conclusion,
VC Bet have opened a market on who will get the least number of votes cast.
There are ten candidates standing and the favourite at 5/4 to get the least number of votes is Paul Thorogood, who is standing under the banner of Cut Tax on Petrol and Diesel.
The Flying Brick - candidate for the Official Monster Raving Loony
Party - is second favourite at 7/4, followed by former Conservative
Party activist Mark Walklate at 9/4.
Miss Great Britain, Gemma Garrett has the full weight of the Sun newspaper behind her, so it is likely that she will have a reasonable amount of support and she is priced at 11/2.
1405: Paddy Power have paid out on the
Conservatives winning the
Crewe & Nantwich by-election (also see 1200 bulletin).
The bookie announced the payout a day early after The Conservatives were backed off the boards to steal the long-standing Labour seat. More than 90% of the betting for Crewe was in favour of the Conservatives, with
Paddy Power even taking one bet of £5,000 for a Tory win at 1/6.
Coming hot on the heels of Labour's 10p tax disaster the Tories started as 2/5 favourites to win the Crewe & Nantwich seat.
The money on the Conservatives was unprecedented for a Labour stronghold and their odds were cut repeatedly all the way down to 1/6 with
Paddy Power finally calling it a day today when the Tories odds reached just 1/20 today.
Paddy Power said: "It looks like Labour are going to be given an
absolute Crewe cut. No matter what odds we offer, people wanted to bet on a Conservative upset in the Labour stronghold.
The Conservatives have also been cut from 1/2 to 2/5 to win the next General Election with the expected win in Crewe the final confirmation that Labour have an almighty fight on their hands.
David Cameron's Conservatives had been favourites since November 26 last year but the Crewe result, the Tories' first by-election gain from Labour in 30 years if it materialises, will be seen as an acid test to his fortunes across the nation.
