Joey rose to lofty heights in record time, winning Rookie of the Year for 2005 and nearly defeating the great Kobayashi in hamburgers and hot dogs. He has not been beaten by an American in almost a year.

His career consists of the 2005 and 2006 seasons, in which he won the asparagus title twice, placed second in hot dogs on July 4 with the new american record of 52 dogs and buns in 12 minutes, placed second to Kobayashi again in bratwurst, twice beat Sonya Thomas in waffles, twice won the Chinook Winds rib-eating championship and dominated the Verizon Voice Wing chicken wing championship. His greatest career achievement however, and perhaps the greatest achievement of any American eater, was to lead Takeru Kobayashi for seven out of the eight minutes in the Krystal hamburger-eating contest. Were it not for a mis-dunk, Chestnut would have beaten the great master of Japan.

Yeah that Kobayashi guy was a pro that they did a documentary on - fairly slim(but strong) guy who does training for it and looked as disciplined as any pro athlete.

Not fav here tho which is surprising given that no one could touch him in the world on the documentary - must be some new kid on the block here(altho instead of fresh faced young pretender its 5 bellied greasy chumper). Need to read up on him.

But wait a minute...

Joey Chestnut on June 2, 2007 broke Kobayashi's 53¾ hot dogs and buns record with 59½ hot dogs and buns.

That's not just breaking it, that's smashing it! 10% more!

Kobayashi expands his stomach for a competition by eating larger and larger amounts of food, and then exercises to ensure that fat will not impede expansion of his stomach during a competition.[10] According to a 2006 episode of MTV's documentary series True Life, Kobayashi has a condition called gastroptosis, an abnormal downward displacement of the stomach. It plays a role in his eating ability because his stomach is able to expand below the rib cage unlike most people, allowing him to take in large portions of food.

Physically Kobayashi has undergone drastic change from his earlier appearances on the competitive eating circuit (weighing in at a mere 110 pounds (50 kg) in his beginning competitions and then 144 pounds (65 kg) in later events.) This is due in large part to his more recent endeavors in weight training. By training with weights and working out, Kobayashi has increased his metabolism, which in turn has helped him to burn more calories. This training is used by Kobayashi to maintain his overall health as well as helping him to elude excess calories from being stored as fat. Kobayashi's official Web site gives his height as 173 cm (5 ft 7 in) and his weight as 75 kg (165 lb), but in a June 29, 2006, entry on his blog, he says that his weight grew to over 196 pounds (89 kg) during 2006, still being under 10 percent body fat.

Kobayashi is also known for his trademark body wiggle, affectionately known as the Kobayashi Shake, which he uses to force food down his esophagus and settle more compactly in his stomach.[11] He eats the hot dogs by splitting the frankfurter in half, swallowing both parts at once, and then dipping the buns in water, Sprite, or 7-Up and stuffing it in his mouth. He calls this the Solomon method.[12]

I think Chestnutt has got this...

Last year he was beaten 53.75 - 52 by Kobayashi, but has improved to over 59 in qualification(he improved by 2 between qualification and tournament last time.)

Kobayashi meanwhile has shown no great improvement year on year, and given Chestnutt only got his 59 2 weeks ago, there's no real time for Kobayashi to respond, even if he could.

However, on Fox's 2003 show Man vs. Beast, Kobayashi's sole loss in an eating competition came against a 1089-pound Kodiak bear, when he ate 31 bunless hot dogs in 2 minutes and 36 seconds to the bear's 50.[9]

Ooo hang on a tick...I've just read something about the record being set in an air conditioned hall, whereas the actual contest is done out in the 4th July sun.

Having said that Kobayashi has done it indoors plenty times and not got near 59 so that might not hold much water.

I do think there is a bit of value on Chestnutt - Kobayashi will be getting that price mainly on reputation/history but on pure recent stats Chestnutt should have it by a country mile.
