My opinion , which is heavily biased towards the Welsh
Captain ...Paul O'Connell , guarenteed to be selected for every test
Full Back ...Lee Byrne was injured in the final 6N match Heineken to come so Robert Kearney @ 4.00
Outside half ...Stephen Jones for me , due to scrum half partnership
Scrum half ...In the 6N Phillips was the best of a poor bunch , but I fancy Peel @ 17 , best scrummy on those hard pitches, the only drawback would be if he were not selected to travel.
Hooker ..I would not have Rees in my Welsh team , this is the most difficult one to choose

My two bets would be POC as captain and Peel at scrum half

Re: British and Irish Lions Tour 2009

I'll be posting actively on this thread aswell since ive been waiting for this series all year! The lions are a unique tour which gets me supporting players ive been cursing all year such as Joe Woresley

Having a look around there are limited markets on the first game on Sat, Royal XV v British & Irish Lions. The bookie with the most markets is Bet365 so far me thinks. Havent spotted a try scoring market yet on this game alone so if you see one traeth gimme a shout.

The match result odds are as follows ;

British and Irish lions 1/200 to win
Royal XV 20/1

No value here, it will be a win for the lions im sure.

The handicap odds are as follows ;

British and Irish lions -32.5 10/11
Royal XV + 32.5 4/5

Tuff call, i think the bookies have got this one right. Lions have a solid team for the first game with players ichting to impress but 32.5 is a fair few points with the game at altitude. I wouldnt be risking this one

The best market i can see is the winning margin market.

Lions to win by 16-20 9/1
Lions to win by 21-25 15/2
Lions to win by 26-30 13/2

I think everyone in the rugby world will expect the lions to win this match. Geeks has gone with a tuff pack and a backline with alot of pace that will surely win this game by a few tries. These are some good odds but it is diffucult to call because we know nothing about the Royal XV

My bet for the day would be First scoring play, Lions penalty at 6/4. You can have the try and 7/4 . With ROG kicking and the territorial game the lions are likely to play this may be a sound bet.

Re: British and Irish Lions Tour 2009

the weekend's game was a terrible game to watch ,Royal XV played well fora poor side , but there were some poor performances from quite a few players.

wednsday match
Golden Lion v British Lions

the odds from bet365
the handicap
Golden Lions +12.0 10/11 Tie 16/1 British & Irish Lions -12.0 10/11
the straight win
Golden Lions 7/2 Tie 25/1 British & Irish Lions 1/5

this is a much better British Lions side and stronger than the one I was expecting , any opinions?

both sides from the bbc
Quote:
British and Irish Lions team to play the Golden Lions:

Re: British and Irish Lions Tour 2009

Strong team selected v Sharks in Durban.
Absolute last chance for Shane Williams to step up. Being given another chance, now outside the two Test centres, means that Geech wants him to start but wants him to prove why. Why he shouldn't go with Ugo Monye and/or Tommy Bowe.
Is this the test pack? Apart from the front row?
The two bolters with a look-in in the backs over the 3 Teats could be Flutey and Halfpenny, both on the bench.
10 of these look live Test starters a week Saturday so it's interesting to see how they bring it all to the boil. ie this is a Wednesday game but not a 'dirt-tracker' XV.
No significant injuries so far, but now it gets tougher.

Lions to win by 12. Solid result, but nothing special.

British and Irish Lions: 15 Lee Byrne (Ospreys & Wales), 14 Shane Williams (Ospreys & Wales),13 Brian O'Driscoll (Leinster & Ireland), 12 Jamie Roberts (Cardiff Blues & Wales), 11 Luke Fitzgerald (Leinster & Ireland), 10 Ronan O'Gara (Munster & Ireland), 9 Mike Phillips (Ospreys & Wales), 8 James Heaslip (Leinster & Ireland), 7 David Wallace (Munster & Ireland), 6 Tom Croft (Leicester & England), 5 Paul O'Connell (Munster & Ireland) (capt), 4 Alun-Wyn Jones (Ospreys & Wales), 3 Adam Jones (Ospreys & Wales), 2 Lee Mears (Bath & England), 1 Gethin Jenkins (Cardiff Blues & Wales),
Replacements: 16 Mathew Rees (Scarlets & Wales), 17 Phil Vickery (Wasps & England), 18 Simon Shaw (Wasps & England), 19 Joe Worsley (Wasps & England), 20 Mike Blair (Edinburgh & Scotland), 21 Riki Flutey (Wasps & England), 22 Leigh Halfpenny (Cardiff Blues & Wales).

Re: British and Irish Lions Tour 2009

hi pie , great to see you , i've not posted much about my previous bets , my bet lost on saturday as i was on the Lions -15 , looked good with only 20 minutes gone , then they suffered that sin-binning which changed the game , Lions looked poor after that.

I agree with you about Shane , he has not looked himself this season since getting award "world best player" , he's being given plenty of chances to prove himself .
It is only Bowe that has looked decent onthe wing , the other options have only been average , I was expecting them to experiment with Roberts on the wing but it looks as if they have decided on Roberts /O'Driscoll as centre pairings.
I was wondering how the transistion from the saturday to wednesday side would be made...looks like they are not going tobother with that , my test team would be:
front row ...jenkins , mears , vickery
second row...o'connell, hines or jones [ i prefer jones but it could be my welsh bias showing here ]
back row ...wallace , heaslip , ferris ,
s.h. and o.h....phillips and jones
centres ...roberts and o'driscoll
wings ... bowe and kearney[ or they could play byrne here , wednesday may give us a clue when they sub the backs]
f.b. ...byrne

i'll be going on the lions -15 with bet365

i still think that South Africa will win the series 3-0

Re: British and Irish Lions Tour 2009

latest news from the bbc

Quote:
Wales's Ryan Jones has been called up by the British and Irish Lions after Stephen Ferris was ruled out of their tour of South Africa by a knee injury.
bad news for ferris as he looked good , but jones should have been there from the start in my opinion , the only one missing now is the best scrummy in britain, peel

Re: British and Irish Lions Tour 2009

the first test is today ,odds from bet365

South Africa 2/5 Tie 22/1 British & Irish Lions 2/1

Hcap With Tie
South Africa -7.0 10/11 Hcap Tie 16/1 British & Irish Lions +7.0 10/11

the Lions have not shown much up to now , i'm not sure if they have kept something in reserve for the tests
one advantage the lions have is their recent matches whilst the springbox may be caught "cold"

I believe that South Africa will win and will overcome the handicap of -7 points

my reasoning:
Lions have the better front row , will the ref allow proper srummaging , they havn't up to now on this tour
S.A. second row are their strength , o'connell has not showed much up to now ,awj is lightweight
lions backrow is their weakness , lions have gone for mobility a mistake in my opinion , this is where the game will be won
lions have the welsh half backs , phillips is strong but has to step before the pass which slows the pass , he is also mental when riled , S.A. will try to wind him up , can see him getting a yellow card today
Jones , does the job but nothing special
in the backs S.A. have the pace , lions do not have the pace to match , i'm not impressed with moyne defensive work,
byrne , bowe ,o'driscoll and roberts have been the class players on this tour so farand they could produce something special today , if these boys get enough ball we could see a cracker but they need to be on form and minimise their mistakes.
from what i've seen of the tour matches the lions have been giving too many penalties away and if they continue in that vein they wikl be punished today.
S.A. hve lost burger in the backrow but have gained brussow in his place , brussow was impressive when he played the lions earlier in the tour. i think the S.A. advantage in the second row and backrow will win them the match today .
this game is being played in cape town at sea level whilst the other two tests will be at altitude [ playing at altitude will be a disadvantage to the lions],but those are to come , looking forward to today match

my bet is South Africa -7 @10/11 with bet365

edit S.A. -7 is now available at evens
