Super League, Friday
Wigan v Huddersfield (+12)
This is a bit of a carbon copy of a lot of games this year, in the fact that Wigan get beat convincingly one week and the next get back on track. That can be the case again here as they were outclassed by St Helens but should have too much guile for the Giants. Pat Richards was a late withdrawal against Saints last week and it's significant for Wigan when he's out. He's back, as should be Phil Bailey who will give them stability in their defensive line. Tim Smith could also make his debut, so we're talking about three very good, high-profile players coming into the team. They can provide some energy for the Warriors, who can win the game and cover the start.
Challenge Cup, Saturday
(+6) Leeds v St Helens, Galpharm Stadium
I coached St Helens in 2003 when Leeds took the game to extra-time and Danny McGuire came off the bench to score two tries. He is going to be one of the most significant players of the weekend because he is the one person who is capable of breaking the St Helens defensive line. On paper St Helens are a better team. Man for man, they are probably a better team. But over the last 12 months Leeds have a knack of being very physical against St Helens, using their forward power and they've been able to cause them some problems in that area. Brent Webb is also key. If Leeds are to win the game he must play. But with McGuire, Webb and Rob Burrow they do have some enterprise. If all three play, Leeds have a major chance. St Helens have covered the start for the last seven weeks which is quite phenomenal, but can they do it here in a big game with more intensity? Leeds might just be able to put in a big performance here, and this could be a close one like in 2003. I'm going to side with Leeds with the four point start.
Challenge Cup, Sunday
(+6) Wakefield v Hull, Keepmoat Stadium
This game couldn't have come at a better time for Hull. They had their local derby last week where they hammered Hull KR, while Wakefield have lost their last three games. Hull will be very confident going into this. Wakefield have been really scratchy and will want to prove themselves here and they can start well, and I think it will be close early on, but I fancy Hull to pull away eventually. They will be buoyed by last week's win, they have all their men back, are in winning form and can earn their right to play at Wembley here. Wakefield just aren't playing well enough and their fairytale looks like coming to an end in Doncaster.
NRL, Saturday
Canberra v Gold Coast (+8) The Raiders would have been specials here if their half-back Todd Carney hadn't been stood down for discipline reasons. He's an exciting player. The Titans have two of their best players out in Scott Prince and Mat Rogers, though, and for that reason alone Canberra can win the game and cover the start.
