Poker Tips

We've had a few threads on this. Maybe i can offer some these days. the reason that i mention was due to that fella Steve errr Bannerman? (lost to Joe Hachen in 2005 main event) He had A10 and raised, got a caller and then someone went all-in. the big Steve fella was a nice fella and a jovial sort and while considering the call (about 1/4 of his stack i think) He got a piece of paper out. On it was some 'notes' Note 1 was - have fun, note 2 bah blah blah etc etc On the back of it though he had a tip that i wquite liked

'Not calling a raise is only a small error'

I suppose thats true. Never thought of it that way. Obviously any call is you just weighing up the situation but it's nice to know that and i do remind myself of it at times. I dunno if i have anymore 'tips'

'when your first to enter a pot raise rather than calling'

Maybe there could be times to limp rather than raise but i cant think of them. It don't suit my aggressive game. i tend to raise with anything if im quite late and its been folded to me. It helps me mix up my game. Yes i suppose you could re-raise me more often knowing this but i do the same raise with AA as i would with 85. i suppose its because i will have 'position' after the flop. position is so important aint it?

Re: Poker Tips

if your raise is gonna be more than 1/3rd of your stack then you might as well go all in

Re: Poker Tips

Im gonna work on writing a beginners guide to playing poker for a couple of pals who refuse to read poker books and seem to think that they do ok just playing like........:cnuts no i mean green fish types. I dont know as much about poker as a lot of folks and certainly im imaginging that im probably only about 15% down the road of understanding things to play at a high staked level. I do however see the key points that a player should know to bridge the gap from a complete novice fish that maybe has played for 8 months and has never looked at improving their game to being a player that is trying to maximise his winnings and minimise his loses. I will learn things on the way no doubt. I will make a list as i think of them as i go but your welcome to add any points.

Blind Stealing
Continuation Bets
Calling/Betting on the river
Position
Starting Hand Selection
Pre-Flop play

Re: Poker Tips

a key skill to me is asking yourself 'am i ahead of his range?' when sitting with a smallish stack 10-15bb. I think this is important when your sitting with something like KQs to an early raiser. Was he raising with KJ? thats about all i beat. Folding is probably advisable unless the person raising has less than you and is under pressure himself. that said calling off a good bit of your stack with almost any call is bad. you should be all in. Just play hands that you think your ahead in.

Re: Poker Tips

While you should always consider if your card is ahead against other players in the table, it is important for you to know as well the reputation of the other players on the table. Reputations such as a caller, a fish or tight aggressive are important before considering calling, raising or folding your middle strength card. You position is also important.

There are several things to consider and thus, you may want to practice on small amounts before heading for a higher stake poker game.

Absolute genius

That's where I've been going wrong. I've been searching for the best possible players I could find.

All depends on how the table is playing. I think every table is different and you have to adapt to how hat able is playing.

If I know there is a guy at the table who likes to squeeze and punish the limpers whilst he is in posistion then I will happily limp with AA looking to get a couple of callers to build a nice pot for this "squeeze guy" to make his move. I can raise it up 2.5-4x the BB and everyone folds and I take the blinds.. I dont care how big the blinds and antes are if i only take the blinds with AA then I am not happy.. complete waste of a situation. I'm happy to limp in get a few players to come along which gives me extra equity when i repop the squeeze guy from the limpers aswell..

Limping works great against agressive players as they always see limping as weakness and they look to take you off you're hand with any 2 cards (good players anyway)

I think the biggest tool in online poker is the chatbox.. Id say about 75-80% of my earnings have come from my actions in the chatbox.. i make people believe what i want them to believe. Obviously it does'nt work on everybody but I spend a few levels trying ot suss out who i can manipulate through the chabox and it works well for me.

I have made people fold QQ & KK preflop whilst i have been holding junk and also call off their whole stacks with bottom pair or A high on a 4flush 4 straightening board all because to my "speech play"
