Playing 500 STT's

Been playing poker with very small stakes for a little while now and found that 6-seater turbos suit my play more than any other (ie. I have no patience to wait for people to take their turn). Anyway, decided I'll play 500 $10 + $1 STT's 6 seater super turbo. Got off to a good start then had 4 3rds in a row. Haven't placed in the money in 6 tournies.

A question for some of you seasoned players....

I generally sit out the first few rounds so the all in idiots get out the way (generally 2/6 are tools). I'm only playing JJ QQ KK AA AK AQ KQ during these opening rounds. Is this good logic even though the blinds can quickly catch up with you during super turbo games?

if no one 's answerin I'll try - it's the only strategy in my opinion, some would only play kings, aces and AK's during few opening rounds and it is good as well. It sounds like you playing on betfair - them super turbos, I used to play them a lot but then I realised that I had no edge over the rest of the players, I mean if you lucky you'll get 2 players out before 75/150 blinds but then lol it's complete lottery, 2 min blinds is far too short to have any edge, it's so quick that the other players don't have enough time to knock themselfs out in early rounds so quite often you end up with 5 players and blinds 150/300, you also don't have time to pick up a decent hand and double up - with blinds raising so quickly you're forced to go all-in with a hand like K10 and pray everyone else folds. That sample of 30 stt's shows you're breaking even with your play : you won $210 and lost 21 times, your loss comes from 30 fees $1 each you had to pay every time you played. Give your game a chance and try longer blinds - turbos are 5min blinds so 1.5 time more to pick up a better hand or let them idiots knock themselfs out before you reach the bubble.

I wouldn't get TOO hung up on which hands you play - what you're looking for is situations where you're a big favourite in the early stages. Strong hands give you that, but short-stacks against you and position also give you that. Lots of limpers and a good multi-way hand (E.g. small pairs, connectors etc) are good to play too.

As the blinds get bigger (maybe over about 5% of your stack) you have to stop playing speculative hands and look for good opportunity to steal blinds and to pick off probable steals from other players - you want hands that have some showdown value though in case you get called - e.g. I'd re-raise an aggro player with QJs but not with K5o etc. Any other hand you play you have to be prepared (bar exceptional situations) to get all your chips in pre-flop - i.e. you're being very selective

Once the blinds hit about 10% of your stack, you're just looking for a spot to get all your chips in with a decent hand. Also be prepared to call short-stack all-ins trying to steal your blind even for half your stack - and you don't need a huge hand - I'm calling here with Ax, any two cards over 10, any suited King, mid-connectors, any pair etc

If you get to stage where the blinds are 20% of your stack, you just want to be first into the pot.

On the bubble you have to REALLY tighten your calling range, but you can get very aggro with your cards if you're first in and the remaining players can be threatened by your stack. Don't go mental though against people priced in to call - e.g. blinds 100/200 and the BB has 200 left - he's calling with anything, so you don't push your 93o here - but I'd happily push 97 or Queen high if I'm the small blind.

agree about the uber-turbos - they're so fast that its hard to have enough edge to beat the rake. A lot of pros play the 5-min/6hand turbo games though - its just slow enough to make some edge count, but fast enough to give good churn

lol Doc , I always like to read your posts, there's always something new to me. I said lol coz your stt strategy looks like playing poker and I thought stt's are just a money making tool. Is it a strategy for 8 - 10 min blinds stt's? - that would explain everything - I play only 10 man turbo's and my strategy is quite different ... up until the bubble where we play the same game
