Re: GAA, missing thread, 1st,2nd&3rd Aug.
Well done Suir, ye were spot on with your predictions. I was waiting on Dublin however that turned into a disaster. I didn't think Kerry could cope without the Star but they put on some show. Kerry showed the gulf in class between the top 2 or 3 team and the rest at the minute ( As did Cork). Once Cork and Kerry got into a lead, both Donegal and Dublin collapsed. Was very disappointed in our fellas, showed none of the fighting spirit of previous 2 games. I know the game was over early on but they just allowed Cork to run through them, bar Murphy and Lacey, effort was embarrassing.
Either way though, the bookies were the winner in my weekend tips. So what for next weekend Suir? I fancy Mayo to beat an average Meath side (even though Mayo must still have nightmares about some of their recent performances in croker) and as optimistic as you may try, theres no seeing past a Kilkenny victory either. Early signs give 8 on the handicap. Do you think ye's can restrict the Cats to this? Other than Mullane, I don't think yous have the firepower to cope with Kilkenny on song at Croker which im predicting! I'll leave it with you to mull over! |

Re: GAA, missing thread, 1st,2nd&3rd Aug.
Yes, Donegal were a bit tired looking after coming through the qualifiers, I stilll think ye have some great footballers and if you look back at a previous thread I said this when I stuck my neck out and predicted that ye would beat Galway, what Donegal need is a big name manager from outside the county, you have the same problem as Waterford hurling, we can not have a manager from within our own county as there is too much in fighting and old shite carried over from club games.....one of the big things that help me make my mind up on predicitions is the league, the league and the championship is 2 different things...BUT if you had a very poor league, the championship will not go well, especially in the later stages, how did people rate Dublin who had beaten nothing in the Championship when Kerry had lost only one game all year and were suddenly a team that was finished....
On to the weekend, 09.08.2009 Football - Mayo(8/15) Draw(8/1) Meath(9/4) Hurling (senior)- Kilkenny(2/17) Draw(16/1) Waterford(7/1) (minor) Kilkenny(1/2) Draw(10/1) Tipperary(1/2) Mayo v Meath, yes Meath well used to Croke Park and Mayo seem to fall apart there, but Meath are missing their best player Stephen Bray who was sent off the last nite against Limerick, my early thinking is to back Meath +handicap as Mayo are nothing special either, Kilkenny minors should be too strong for a Tipp side that has come through the qualifiers in the minor game at 1200. As for the Deise, yes it is hard to see past Kilkenny, but don't read too much into what you hear either, that this team or that team is better equipped to beat Kilkenny, we have as good a chance of beating them as anyone else, I saw us beat them in the league earlier this year...the only team that has beaten them in the past year, Croke Park is their home ground too they have been hurling there since they were minors, year in year out, we have got to keep the full back line tight, like we did against Galway, goals win games....we can match or outpoint anyteam...anyhow I'm hoping with the confidence of our league win, the better organisation this time around and the 2 weeks break that we will give them a game, well I'm sure we can, we mayl have the Mayo/Meath support too I hope! I have had a good piece of Waterford +8 at 21/20 Boylesports which seems very generous. UP THE DEISE. Does anyone know why they call us the Deise? |

Some time between the 4th and 8th centuries, a tribe of native Gaelic people called the Déisi were driven from the southern parts of the country, conquering and settling here. The ancient principality of the Déise is today roughly coterminous with the current Roman Catholic Diocese of Waterford and Lismore. The Deise has a rich history from megalithic tombs and ogham stones, to Vikings, to remnants of English occupancy, including the Gaulstown dolmen, Reginalds Tower and the Ballysaggartmore Towers respectively. |

Re: GAA, missing thread, 1st,2nd&3rd Aug.
Lads, I'd say its back to the tombs this weekend as I think ye'll be buried by Kilkenny. This is not sour grapes or anything like that - I stood up here and ate my humble pie 2 weeks ago, but I'm here as a punter plain and simple. Kilkenny are the only team in the country who know how to hang onto a lead. Galway can't, Tipperary can't and there aren't many others there who get into that position ! What I mean here is that the Cats will be out of the blocks so quickly that unless Waterford have their speedy boots on Sunday the game could be over by half-time. With the 8 point handicap for 70 minutes, I'll have someone's arm off if I could get the same odds for a 4 point lead at half-time. I take your point about keeping out the goals - that is the key to staying in the game, and therefore defeating the 70 minute handicap too. Can you keep Kilkenny to less than 1.5 goals ? I don't think so. They seek out the weakness in each team and exploit it. Your back three looked suspect against Tipperary and that's what the Cats will be focussed on. The result doesn't bother me emotionally but it will financially !!

Re: GAA, missing thread, 1st,2nd&3rd Aug.
Well gallimh, you being neutral would have a different view, which is probably the best way to be from a betting point of view, we can't see that, if we did we would stay at home next Sunday, all I can see is that the Deise are again this year against all odds, in the top 4 teams in Ireland, giants, warriors, legends.........but I do not agree that our fullback line looked suspect against Tipp, the corner backs we have available are as good as any in the country, all stars Eoin Murphy and Aidan Kearney + Noel Connors is only 20 and is outstanding.......the fullback line problem is not the corners, but in the middle.....anyhow from what you have said... am I to believe that if the Waterford +8 is not a good bet and the KK win is poor value at 2/17.......come on then, let us see you put your prediction...the opposite it looks like? down here in black and white

Re: GAA, missing thread, 1st,2nd&3rd Aug.
As I've said, if I can get Kilkenny -4 at half-time on a handicap list I'll take that. Why ?
Kilkenny will win, but at 2/17 its madness having a bet. The -8 or +8 will depend largely upon you lads stopping goals and I don't know which way that will go. I see them leading early and you lads eating into that lead later. That's why I prefer the ht option - just hoping its on betfair or somewhere. If I go back to the start of the hurling campaign on June 14th there was an abysmal game between Limerick and Waterford (a draw). back then no-one could have seen both in the last four. I can't see either in the last two, and expect Kilkenny to face their fourth different opponent from Munster on September 6th. |

Re: GAA, missing thread, 1st,2nd&3rd Aug.
TW, did you hav a punt on the big game tomorrow? I also had a cut of the 6/5 +8 with stanjames....and a bit of the 8/1 for the win! it will be a different game to last September, leaving out last year's all Ireland there is never much between them, Kilkenny say that themselves, they say that Waterford are always their toughest opponents...the bigger they are... the harder they fall!
UP THE DEISE! |

Re: GAA, missing thread, 1st,2nd&3rd Aug.
Killkenny 2-23 Waterford 3-15, Waterford gave a very good account of them selves and went down fighting, there were times when I thought we were going to win it, too many wides in the first half (8), but we were beaten by the better team on the day, we are certainly not finished yet and will be a hurling force for many years to come, I had them on the +8 handicap with both 21/20 Boyles and 6/5 stanjames which I said was generous of them, I was very confident they would beat this handicap and I said it here, I was never worried about it watching the game and I collected. Meath on the handicap as I hinted and Killkenny minors won the minor game as predicted which made up a good treble to top off a very good days punting........ I would give it all back for an All Ireland...but we have waited 51 years, so whats another year, DEISE TIL I DIE!
