Minimum bets and raises are mostly frowned upon within the 'educated' poker fraternity. As far as being a move designed to get rid of opponents, a min-raise generally just make the pot odds look even more tempting for chancers to see a flop with junk and get lucky. Also, if some rock across the table makes that min-raise, everyone puts him on AA and mucks anyway.



However, thanks to the advent of online poker - and more specifically the auto-action boxes - there is a situation where the min-bet/raise can serve a good purpose. Picture a hand where everyone in the hand limped pre-flop. You're first to act... you check and IMMEDIATELY behind you the next two players also check - in fact they check so fast, they must have had the 'check or fold' button already checked. I used to do this a fair bit myself. I'd see a flop, hit no part of it, and thought 'if it's free I'll see what the turn brings, but I certainly ain't paying any more money'. I'd check the box, sit back, and see what fate had in store for me.



So... back to our story. Having noticed the players behind us, and how instantly they checked, we might imagine that they will do the same for the turn. And THIS is the place a min bet might be worth while. If there's 200 in the pot, and the min bet is 20, it's lame - I know! - but when the guys behind you click 'check or fold' they don't get to stipulate how big the bet needs to be to get rid of them! You could bet 20c and they'd still be folded out of a pot offering them massive pot odds to call. I find this is used particularly by lovers of Ace-Rag. They don't connect, don't want to continue betting, but are happy to check along and spike an ace on the river.



Just by paying attention and firing out that min bet into lovers of the check box, you'll often find the two players that insta-checked post-flop, now find themselves being insta-folded. Even if it doesn't win you the pot, you can clear out some of the fishermen on the table, and focus your super-honed poker skills on any remaining limpers

Actually if you look closely I didn't play that hand good, I should have put him all-in for his remaining 155 chips - dunno if me calling his 400 bet after the flop was also wise ( I had just a pair of deuces with an ace kicker)
