Really looking forward to seeing this over the weekend – third or fourth remake of the short story from more paranoid cold war times. Will Smith plays what he thinks is the last man on earth after an unknown catastrophe has wiped out the rest of the human race. Trailers look great – cross between 28 days later, Blade and 12 Monkeys.

The Charlton Heston original “The Omega Man” and the Australian movie “The Quiet Earth” are both based on the book.

I saw this last week (I was out in Hong Kong and it came out last week there). I thought it took a little while to get going although to be fair a scene needed to be set cos its not set in just a normal world. Id definitely draw comparisons with 28 days later although its not as good as that. Smiths does a fine job as per and depicts the loneliness of being the last man on earth well including some funny talking to himself type dialogue. There also a couple of real tearjerk moments (well I saw quite a few girls crying in the cinema anyway) but they were genuinely emotional. However, I thought where the villains/vampires/zombies whatever you call them were involved they could have done a lot better. They were full on cgi crud really looked like a computer game more or less and they were nowhere near as scary as they should be (in contrast with the 28 days/28 weeks later films for example). In short I would say by day its a quality piece of sci fi but by night its standard fare thriller. Worth watching though its decent and has its moments.

just saw it, very dissapointed. The Cgi was bad and as Mr M mentions not scary- I think jumpy type of suspense would have been better and to be honest this film is a few years too late. It retreads ground already done, and done better by 28 days later and its sequel 28 weeks later.
I think exploration of being the last man alive would have been a better route to go down as with quiet earth which explores the questions that this what if happened.

ok popcorn flick but from the teaser trailers and the first 30 mins I expected more.

Agreed.

Started off quite good as you saw what his "world" was like now, New York 3 years after a virus hits and kills everyone, and had potential but just sort of drifted along without ever really doing anything. Wee twist at the end but I was left with a "Is that it" type feeling and pretty underwhelmed by the whole film.

i watched it by mistake yesterday and thought i'd give it a try. Started bad and got worse before fizzeling right out. I wasnt intrigued just bored. I wanted him to get killed.
