Copa America play-offs and final

Tuesday 10th July

4/7 Brazil 3/1 Uruguay 9/2

Wednesday 11th July

4/7 Argentina 13/5 Mexico 5/1

odds Frank Hughes....hughesbet.com

Pick for tonight is Uruguay +2 which ive been given at 1/2 with hughes... thought Uruguay were super against Venezuela even though they are a poor outfit...i think they will give Brazil a good game tonight..was tempted by a small bet on Uruguay at 9/2

Good luck all

Re: Copa America Semi Finals

What do you think about the finals? Argentina looks like a tough team to beat right now.

Re: Copa America Semi Finals

From what i've saw and already posted in the other thread (what ever t was called)

I fancy Argentina. I backed them at 6/4 towin the tournment and they have played very well.

Granted Brazil have done better than I actually expected - or have they ?

I don't no if i mentionewd this earlier in the other thread or not but i thought they would do ok but after loosing to MMexico fist game then qualifying could be a problem.

Uraguay should have beat Brazil on pens the other night and for the post they didn't however Argentina have not been anywhere near penalties apart from a few dodgy ones in their games (i think)

Not saying Argentina will win in 90 mins as Robinho has proved he's got talent.

Hopefullyly Argentina to lift cup

and it's on at a decent time - kicks of 10:05pm on SUnday night (in the k ony how)

Re: Copa America play-offs and final

Argentina have been the most impressive team by far however are prone to conceding goals like they did notably against Columbia wghen they were on the ropes at stages however are the best squad at the tournament. Brazil too imo should have been beat in 90 mins by Uruguay and a re lucky to even be in the final..Id have to go with the Argies.

Also the 17/10 ive seen flashed about for Uruguay is very big as i think they should be favourites over Mexico who were poor against Argentina compared to Uruguay's excellent performance against Brazil..however will both teams be pumped up for the game field full strengthed teams???

Re: Copa America play-offs and final

Brazil’s brute force faces Argentine finesse
(Reuters)14 July 2007

MARACAIBO — Argentina’s finesse and artistry will be pitted against Brazil’s raw physical strength and power as the old rivals meet in Sunday’s Copa America final.

The tournament has produced what is generally considered the ideal final for the second time in a row and Argentina are attempting to avenge their traumatic penalty shootout defeat in Peru three years ago.

The form book is in Argentina’s favour for a match which will offer an intriguing clash of styles.

Alfio Basile’s team have won all their five games, scoring 16 goals, on their way to the final and played a brand of slick, attacking football which many feared was in danger of extinction.

Juan Roman Riquelme has conducted the team majestically from midfield and Lionel Messi’s chipped goal against Mexico prompted a war of superlatives and comparisons with Diego Maradona.

Brazil, on the other hand, have battled their way through despite losing to Mexico in the group stage and being taken to penalties by Uruguay in the semi-final.

It is a curious case of role-swapping, as for years Argentina were considered to be ruthless and uncompromising while Brazil were seen as the artists. The differences in style are reflected by the respective coaches.

Basile, with his slicked-back hair and gravelly voice, is seen an old school romantic who cares about playing with style.

“It’s not just about winning. You can simply win a game, but to win the way we are doing makes me proud,” he said after the 4-0 quarter-final win over Peru.

His opposite number Dunga, meanwhile, represents the modern face of football as he puts the emphasis firmly on efficiency and numbers.

“If we’re going to start up that debate again over playing pretty football, we’ll probably go another 24 years without winning (the World Cup) which is what the others want,” he said, referring to the gap between Brazil’s third world title in 1970 and their fourth in 1994.

If Argentina win, they will reverse a trend which has so far rewarded the modern-day Brazilian style.

Argentina’s last title was in 1993 when they won the Copa America, coincidentally with Basile at the helm.

Since then, Brazil have walked off with two World Cups (1994 and 2002), three Copa America titles (1997, 1999 and 2004) and two Confederations Cups (1997 and 2005).

Upper hand

They have also had the upper hand in meetings between the two countries.

Brazil have won the last two games by three goal margins (4-1 in the Confederations Cup final in 2005 and 3-0 in a friendly last year) and the last three Copa America meetings, though two were on penalties.

“We have great hopes at this moment,” said defender Javier Zanetti. “After all these years without winning an important title, we now have the opportunity. Argentina have a chance to make history with this title.”

Possible teams:

Brazil: 1-Doni; 2-Maicon, 3-Alex Rodrigo, 4-Juan, 6-Gilberto; 5-Mineiro, 18-Fernando, 17-Josue, 19-Julio Baptista; 9-Vagner Love, 11-Robinho.

Argentina: 1-Roberto Abbondanzieri; 8-Javier Zanetti, 2-Roberto Ayala, 15-Gabriel Milito, 6-Gabriel Heinze; 5-Javier Mascherano, 8-Juan Sebastian Veron, 15-Esteban Cambiasso, 10-Juan Roman Riquelme; 11-Carlos Tevez, 18-Lionel Messi.

Brazil coach Dunga says Argentina favourites
(Reuters)14 July 2007

MARACAIBO, Venezuela - Brazil coach Dunga on Friday declared Argentina as favourites to win the Copa America final against his team on Sunday.

“From what Argentina have done so far, they are the favourites,” he told reporters. “We’ve done our part by reaching the final, now we have to surpass that.

“But I always want to win, this is a final and anything can happen,” he added.

“We have conviction in our work, we knew it would not be easy, that there would be innumerable difficulties on the way.”

Argentina have scored 16 goals and won all five games in reaching the final. Brazil, on the other hand, lost to Mexico in the early rounds and needed penalties to beat Uruguay in their semi-final.

Brazil are also without Ronaldinho and Kaka, who asked to be rested from the tournament, while Argentina are at full strength.

“Argentina is a mature team which has played together before, Brazil is a new team with only two players from the last World Cup,” added Dunga.

The old rivals also met in the 2004 Copa America final in Peru, where Brazil scored with the last kick of the game to force a 2-2 draw and then won on penalties.

Argentina set to end 14-year title drought

MARACAIBO, Venezuala, July 14--Argentina are posed to end their 14 year Copa America famine when they meet their arch-rival in South America Brazil in Sunday's final.
Argentina set up this revenge meeting - they were beaten by Brazil on penalties in the last final in Peru three years ago - with a 3-0 rout of Mexico in Ciuduad Guayana on Wednesday.
Gabriel Heinze, Lionel Messi and Juan Roman Riquelme were all on the mark to ensure their place in Sunday's showpiece encounter at the Jose Pachencho Romero Stadium in Maracaibo.
Argentina will be bidding for a record 15th Copa America title against the seven-times and reigning champions Brazil, who struggled to defeat Uruguay 5-4 on penalties on Tuesday in the first semi-final, which ended 2-2 after regular time.
Both teams have looked at this as a means to overcome the disappointment of missing out in last year's World Cup in Germany and to lay the groundwork for qualifying for the 2010 edition in South Africa.
Robinho heads the race for the golden boot award with six goals, with Riquelme on five.

Crespo back to play final

MARACAIBO, Venezuela, July 14 -- Argentina striker Hernan Crespo has been fit to play in Sunday's Copa America final against Brazil, a team spokesman said on Friday.
Crespo, playing in his first Copa at the age of 32, sprained a thigh muscle as he scored a penalty in the 4-2 win over Colombia, Argentina's second game at the tournament.
Spokesman Andres Ventura said the team doctor had declared Crespo, who scored three goals in two games before his injury, available for selection.
"Hernan is very important for the team, especially from a morale point of view," said team mate Esteban Cambiasso. "It's also important for the players because we saw the hard work he did to recover."
Both Diego Milito and Carlos Tevez have partnered Lionel Messi in attack in Crespo's absence.

Brazil - Argentina

Pick: Argentina to win Copa America
Odds: 1.51 @ 10Bet
Stake: 8/10

Argentina is playing great football on this Copa America. They are dominating in all of the games, they are the only team that won every game that they played and they showed why they were rates as number one favorites on this tournament.

Brazil had some good matches too, but mostly those matches were against weaker opponents. When they faced a bit stronger opponent they were having a lot of troubles (n the case when they played against Mexico and Uruguay). The absence of Kaka and Ronaldinho is feeling a lot, because this Brazil have loss all of its creativity and only player that worth mentioning is Robinho. All others are playing below their abilities.

I think that Messi, Riquelme, Tevez, Milito are too much offensive power for any team at the moment. Brazil will have even more problems in the midfield because Gilberto Silva will not play today. Last Copa America, Argentina has stronger team, similar like this year, but Brazil managed to beat them in the finals. This is the right time for revenge.
