Sweetnorthernsaint primed for Derby glory
by Dan Farley (May 6) THE forecast for today at Churchill Downs is cool and dry, but it’s likely to be anything but when the two starting gates open and let loose the 20 runners seeking Classic glory.
There are so many angles to this Kentucky Derby that one could go blind in search of the winner.
There is Brother Derek, trained by a man wheelchair-bound after a motorcycle accident and ridden by a jockey whose career – and ability to walk – was nearly ended in a spill last season. Dan Hendricks and Alex Solis are the stuff of which movies are made.
Brother Derek has been made the 3-1 morning line choice for the race after dominating the Derby preps run at Santa Anita, the most recent of those outings coming in the Santa Anita Derby four weeks ago.
Hendricks is very much to the point: “He’s doing fine. I have to be happy with the way things are coming along.” He said of his outside draw (18 of 20): “The only real fear from out there is that you’re going to get forced wide and lose a lot of ground.”
It could be that favouritism may go to the unbeaten Barbaro, whose connections are also represented by Showing Up, similarly unbeaten.
Michael Matz, trainer of Barbaro, is another hero worthy of the movies, having survived a plane crash and saved other passengers in the process. He said of his Florida Derby winner: “Since he’s come from Florida, he’s done very well. I couldn’t ask him to be any better.”
Showing Up, trained by Derby-winning Barclay Tagg and winner of the Coolmore Lexington Stakes two weeks ago, did not run at two – and the only such Derby winner was Apollo in 1882.
Lawyer Ron comes into the race having won his last six starts. “This is a pretty good horse,” said trainer Bob Holthus, “and I don’t think I’ve gotten to the bottom of him yet, so hopefully he has got one more gear to get by them.”
Sweetnorthernsaint comes into the Derby a solid contender off his Illinois Derby victory and is my idea of the winner, while Bob Baffert has a three-pronged attack in search of a fourth Derby score. Santa Anita Derby runner-up Point Determined is the best of the three, and is backed up by Wood Memorial winner Bob And John and Blue Grass Stakes winner and likely pacesetter Sinister Minister.
AP Warrior, winner of the San Felipe Stakes from Point Determined and Bob And John before falling victim to a lack of pace when third inthe Santa Anita Derby, has gained popularity during the week. He is trained by John Shirreffs, who last year saddled 50-1 shock winner Giacomo.
Steppenwolfer and Jazil are strong finishers who could get a piece of the action with the benefit of a clean trip, and locally based Sharp Humor, a determined runner-up to Barbaro in the Florida Derby, could stick around to figure in the finish after racing prominently early.
DERBY 1-2-3
