I bet out on the flop which i think was correct(??) I tried to look scared of the queen on the turn. I check raised as i never check raise. Did i play this hand ok or did i really mess up the turn? the turn was a bit random. I didnt know what was the best thing to do. the check raise only was thought of AFTER i had checked as i saw he might feel a bit pot commited. I dunno. I can take some raw scolding advice though

thanks

Re: Flopping a Small Flush

First, I wouldn't make a habit of playing 96 (suited or otherwise) UTG. The chances are you're going to get raised, and end up folding or playing the rest of hand our of position.

However, once you've played it like that, and hit the flop. Given that it's a big multiway pot I think it's fair to assume someone's got a decent bit of the board and therefore I like the pot sized bet. Should get rid of anyone chasing a higher flush too.

The guy that's called with QJ on the flop is a muppet (the fact that he raised pf is also laughable).

Check on the turn is also fine - don't want to be scaring him off if he's got AJ for example. I'd probably check-call, and look to get the rest in on river, but as luck would have it he still thinks he's ahead despite your all in raise.

Re: Flopping a Small Flush

i never even saw i was UTG Dave I work away in the early part of a stt and just click Fold. I did think when the screen comes up 'i want to see a flop with this' I think it was because i had a dream about playing 5-a-side football with Doyle Brunson in my team and i was thinking about his 'hands for double gut shots'. I just fancined a wee change to my usual Dave. I wouldnt even play AJ unsuited or pairs 2-7 utg usally (excuses excuses)

Thats the joys of playing $5 stt's for me Dave

Ah the check call Dave. thats it. Ive never done one of them before EVER. I see where it comes into play now. Hold on wouldnt me giving a river card be possibly totally devastating for me Dave? If a diamond hit i think i would fall to my knees on the floor

Re: Flopping a Small Flush

Playing this straight up and just betting big on the flop and moving in on the turn is the best way to play it imo.

Against a PFR who also sticks about for a big bet on the flop id expect a call a fair bit of the time by moving in there. Youd be pushing 1150 into 1290 I believe so its not an overbet or anything dumb. Hes called 430 on the flop leaving himself with a crappy 870, I really fancy him to call, he'll be getting very good odds of about 2.5/1.

Also the fact that he simply called the flop would lead me to think he may have the Ad in his hand and is trying to draw to the flush. By checking you give that hand a chance to suck out on you in a big pot (the pot is slightly bigger than your remaining stack at this point so is huge really). This would be a disaster.

Dont forget either that if you go all in and he folds it aint a big deal, you still won a good pot and made people pay to suck out. The most important thing to do when the pot is big is just to win it. Trying to get a bit tricky in a hand where the pot is bigger than your stack just isnt worth messing about with really.

Re: Flopping a Small Flush

Thanks Mr M. soz and you too Dave. I just felt embarrassed now i see about my UTG call. still it makes me look tricky and when i change gears and go back to my tight ways i might encourage someone with a 2nd pair to bet at me (i dont know what i am talking about do i? ilearnt all i know by the Pokers For Dummies book

aye i shouldnt even have gave him the chance to check me mr m i see that now. With every card i could lose my grip on the pot and i do live by that old poker adage 'better to win a small pot than lose a big one' I suppose inm this case its better to win a big pot than to go broke.

aye i like all this poker dicussion and when im back on the forums full-time im gonna really start using all the info thats here and folks can offer as i need to get better at the game

Re: Flopping a Small Flush

Again, everyone's beaten me to the comments. Pre-flop nope, post-flop A+

I think checking the turn is asking for trouble.

Re: Flopping a Small Flush

I really like the way you played this Komp, maybe not the UTG limp a lots already been said but not much to add, the check on the turn is fine for me.
