Standard Line Check - Easy Call Now Right??

Villain is unknown.

No IQ poker Ensenada 0.50/1, hand converted by the iPoker Converter at Talking-Poker

Button Hero ($99.90)
SB ($96)
BB ($35.45)
UTG ($40.85)
UTG+1 ($49)
CO-1 ($187.70)
CO ($123.08)

Preflop: Hero is on the Button with A J
3 folds, CO raises to 4, Hero calls 4, 1 fold, BB calls 3.

Flop (12.50) T 6 2
BB checks, CO bets 8, Hero raises to 26, 1 fold, CO raises to 111.08, Hero moves all-in for 69.90

I think his range is skewed towards TT-AA with AA + TT being the crushing hands. Because he's unknown, I don't give him credit for a flush here.

Standard call?

Re: Standard Line Check - Easy Call Now Right??

Your basically getting 2/1 to call. The only hand youre actually badly in with is 1010 and its only a small chance he has that. Even if he does have AA which is definitely possible youre about a break even call so thats not disgusting. If he has KK, QQ, JJ then youre not far off a coinflip hence correct to call. If he has just top pair then depending on his kicker youre a slight dog to a small favourite so basically flipping there too. Having raised on the flop yes you have to call it now is basically what im saying. Its a mistake to fold. If I had to guess his hand id say KK or QQ and so youre about 45% and have odds with youre diamond and ace outs.

I guess the only questioning point is the preflop call. I guess youre thinking since hes raised cutoff doesnt necessarily mean a strong hand much plus you have position which is fair enough. Im not a fan of AJo though so personally I just fold it and save myself the bother but in this particular situation nothing wrong with calling.

Flops standard really, he could easily just fold and you take a nice $20 pot and even if he doesnt its not horrible. I think a raise is correct because he can fold a lot of the time there but also if you call you really might not get paid off if you hit and the odds arent great. And you do have to get paid off if you hit otherwise its not worth it.

Position is the main key here as you stated muse. In the blinds it's a instamuck for me vs most opponents

Re: Standard Line Check - Easy Call Now Right??

not crazy about the pre-flop call without a really good read on this player, but not an awful play.

I prefer a call on that flop - keep him wondering and keep the pot under control. As muse explains though, the alternative is a valid play also. The thing about raising is that while you'll get many hands currently ahead of you to fold, the ones that call/re-raise make YOU chase. For example JJ with a diamond there will probably move all-in to your raise, but will slow-down after a call. The hands that may hesitate to re-raise you on that flop, will probably check-fold the turn anyhow, and you've risked less of your stack.

Re: Standard Line Check - Easy Call Now Right??

Been thinking of this hand for a while...
And to be honest.. It might be a mistake, but i think i would fold pre flop....
4 times big blind... If you hit your A on the flop, you may still be way behind...

But now you are in it, i would defently fold on the flop... You have 1 behind you.. And you have nothing.. You are chasing for an A at least.. But if you get it you are still behind to a made flush, or AK, AQ...
So worst case you have 7 outs, to get your nut flush...

Re: Standard Line Check - Easy Call Now Right??

I am NEVER folding on this flop to an unknown. I hate a call Doc cos you almost never get paid when a fourth diamond comes down and how would you play a set here?

Re: Standard Line Check - Easy Call Now Right??

I take your point Scottie, but if you're not folding (and I don't here either), then your only other option is a raise. If you raise he'll fold a lot of hands here, while he'll re-raise a lot. The question is how much more will you make by getting him to fold hands now that he would beat you with, than you make from outdrawing him on hands that he will re-raise (or at least call your raise) with?

My opinion would be that the balance is towards calling, but it isn't clearcut.

Re: Standard Line Check - Easy Call Now Right??

I like the push. Got planty of outs (potentially 14 with two overs and a flush draw). And a lot of folding equity.

I haven't had a hand like this in a long time, its good to discuss this stuff as its hard to get the thinking right at the time if you've never thought about the situation that presents itself.
