Re: 9:45 Wim - the bet of the year?
The bets struck by the three part-owners of The Other Outlaw that stand to return them a cool £96,875 if he obliges
Quote:
CORAL were taken aback on Monday to hear they may face a near-£100,000 liability over The Other Outlaw in Tuesday’s Sky Sports-televised Stan James Grand National at Wimbledon.
The three members of ‘The Man With No Name Syndicate’ Barry Kalogirou, Steve Rands and Keith Allen all backed their runner at 500-1 with the Barking firm five days prior to the competition starting, although Coral now say they are puzzled as to how the price came to be offered about the Jason Foster-trained hurdler.
Kalogirou was first to strike his bet at the Walton-On-Thames branch at 12.03 on Monday, March 23 and he recalls the process.
“I went into the shop and enquired about a price for The Other Outlaw, and made clear it was for the greyhound Grand National that starts on March 28,” he said.
“The cashier rang head office and came back to me saying
500-1. I said ‘are you sure it’s 500-1?’ She went back and checked again and said ‘yes 500-1’.
“I asked for £50 each-way, wrote out the slip and the bet was struck with a reference number included on it.
“I then rang the other two owners and told them if they wanted to back our dog for the Grand National, they should go to Coral as they are quoting 500-1, which they did. One had the same bet as me, the other had £55 each-way.
“As far as we’re concerned we’re on. I’ve got the price on the slip, a reference number and Coral must have the conversations
between the cashier and head-office on tape.”
Coral, however, say that they never offered such a price, with their trading director Simon Clare stating that the biggest they were about The Other Outlaw was 33-1.
The Other Outlaw, an Irish National finalist but relatively unknown in this country at the time, had joined Foster for a tilt at the National and the competition sponsors, Stan James, had put him in their betting at 33s.
Clare said: “Obviously we’ll investigate the circumstances into how the customers were given bets of 500-1 and listen to the tapes between the shops involved and the retail trading desk at head office, he said.
“Human errors occur in all walks of life and we wouldn’t be expected to honour a vastly different price to what we were offering, but I don’t want to speculate on any decision at this stage. We’ll wait until the result is known as to what judgement we make after any necessary investigations are completed.”
