Re: Ryder Cup 2008
Starts on Friday.
Europe go into it with by far the stronger and more in form team, with multiple Ryder Cup wins between them and a lot of players who have played together before and who have enviable records. The US side has the course/support in it's favour, and there have to be question marks over how the Europeans will play under Faldo, who has made some very questionable calls so far(only one vice captain/Poulter over Clarke) and seems to me to be trying to set himself up to come out of this as the hero, completely different to the low key captancies of the last few years which have worked out brilliantly. Will knock up a preview this week. |

Re: Ryder Cup 2008
I have a feeling (without being the biggest golfing expert in the world) that this is being set up for a US win.. Home advantage, no Tiger (who has potentially been a bit of a liability in this event), US wanting to prove a point as underdogs against the big name European, and of course the 'Faldo factor' (that Beanie touches on) which could work either way.. In fact you could even see this US team as the Europe team of about 20 years ago when Europe won for the first time in ages thanks to the Torrence putt..
I also think the reputation of this event as a closely fought spectacle could be tarnished if Europe win yet again.. Certainly I am looking at backing the US for a bit of value this time.. |

Re: Ryder Cup 2008
I think USA are the value here, but I might hang fire for the moment - they'll do well to keep it even through the morning foursomes so the odds should still be there through the afternoon which will give a chance to see how the players all look.
Faldo has had a poor start to his Ryder Cup, the press dont like him and they aren't gonna make this easy for him if it starts going wrong. Harrington has admitted he is fatigued which is not good ahead of something that should allow players to run on pure adrenaline - and I reckon Faldo might push him a little too hard this week - I wouldnt be giving him more than one round a day. I think Europe's best chance is to stretch away with this - that way any doubts over Faldo's captaincy will disappear early - the better players(which Europe have) will have the confidence too, and the US will struggle to catch them. If it's close tho, the home crowd, the 'American' course, and without wanting to keep banging on about it, the 'Faldo' factor, can only help the American cause and I'd back them to come through in a tight one. So I think a good play could be taking the US, maybe covering a European win by 5 points or more at over 3/1 for some cheap insurance, but as I say, Europe should come out of the morning matches atleast level so I'm holding off for now. Morning Foursomes.... Mickelson/Kim v H'ngton/Karlsson Leonard/Mahan v Stenson/Casey Cink/Campbell v Rose/Poulter Perry/Furyk v Westwood/Garcia Doubts about Harrington, and Karlsson's bottle, also with the Rose/Poulter combo - big pressure on that pair and Cink could win that one on his own, Campbell might just need to turn up. Other two tho and I'd make Europe good favourites, would be hoping to pick up 2 points there. |

Re: Ryder Cup 2008
Just before the off, one quick punt which I think looks a fair price...
2pts Mickelson to be Top US Points Scorer @ 6.00(Betfair) His Ryder Cup record is poor, but there's a lot of reasons for that(bad pairings etc) and his record in the US Ryder Cup matches is a lot better. This course will suit him down to the ground as he's shown by playing well here in the past. He'll be involved in all the matches which not many of the US players can be guaranteed, and with no Tiger here I think he'll relish leading from the front. Priced up on the basis of his poor Ryder record, but I think he has a great shout in this market. |

Re: Ryder Cup 2008
Bar the home ground and underdog label for the Yanks, I still can't get away from Europe on this one and I don't agree with the 'Faldo' factor being a negative factor at all. It won't be the hammering from 2 years ago but I think Europe will win this in a fairly tight match.
10pts Europe win 14.5-13.5 @ 12 Betfair 10pts Europe win 15-13@ 12 Betfair 10pts Europe win 15.5-12.5 @ 12.5 Betfair I do agree with the Mickleson pick though Beanie although I've been a little more cautious and taken him to finish in the top 3 scorers for America. He should play in every match giving him most opportunity to finish as top scorer. However, without looking at any past history, there must be a reasonable chance that there may be joint topscorers and that kind of takes the value out of a straight top scorer bet for me. 30pts Mickelson to finish in top 3 US Scorers @ 2.22 Betfair C'mon Europe. ![]() |

Re: Ryder Cup 2008
Intruiging first day, with both sessions following an almost identical pattern. Europe having the better in the early exchanges, building up 2 and 3 shot leads in most games, before a complete reversal, save for a late Westwood fightback in both sessions - that final half point today could prove key in the long run for Europe and the dinner tonight will be a helluva lot more positive than it was going to be.
To be fair I thought Faldo's pairings were actually pretty good - he was just let down by a few players, particularly Garcia and Jimenez who really failed to hit anywhere near their best form(altho in the last match of the day they did run into an inspired Leonard/Mahan.) Bright spots are Westwood who played superbly I thought, Harrington who's putting is second to none at the moment, McDowell who played a great opening 9, and Rose and Poulter who had a very good bounce back win(altho Stricker/Curtis were shocking by all accounts.) Faldo needs to change things up tomorrow - despite him saying he is fatigued, im not sure he has the strength in depth to rest Harrington. I'd lead with a Westwood/Garcia pairing tomorrow - try and get the momentum our way right from the off and give Garcia the responsibility that might get the magic going - McDowell and Harrington worked very well together but just ran into an inspired Mickelson, so I'd stick with those two. He's bound to stick with Rose and Poulter, and im not sure about a 4th pair. My hope would be for: Garcia/Westwood Rose/Poulter Stenson/Karlsson(maybe Hansen)(treat anything from this pair as a bonus and hope to take the pressure off) Harrington/McDowell Harrington could really do with a rest but I just dont think we have that luxury at the moment. I thought the US were celebrating a bit much when leading in the final match today - flag waving, moonwalking, etc - that might just spark the Euros into action tomorrow. But thats all just a fans perspective... ![]() Will look at the betting with fresh eyes tomorrow - Mickelson bet isn't looking too bad - I thought he was the best player on the course today, altho Westwood, Leonard and Mahan sparkled too. Kim held him back a lot I think, wasn't impressed with the young un at all, so I'd hope(altho its unlikely) that Azinger switches Mick to someone else(and that Leonard and Mahan get gubbed too )Last edited by Beanie : 20-09-2008 at 01:17. |

Re: Ryder Cup 2008
FFS! Pairings for tomorrow just in...
Match 1: Stewart Cink/Chad Campbell (USA) vs. Ian Poulter/Justin Rose (EUR) Match 2: Justin Leonard/Hunter Mahan (USA) vs. Miguel Angel Jimenez/Graeme McDowell (EUR) Match 3: Phil Mickelson/Anthony Kim (USA) vs. Henrik Stenson/Oliver Wilson (EUR) Match 4: Jim Furyk/Kenny Perry (USA) vs. Padraig Harrington/Robert Karlsson (EUR) ![]() Dunno what to say - he might aswell have picked those pairs out a hat. Westwood(unbeaten in 12 Ryder matches) and Garcia(W8 D1 L0 record in foursomes) and they're both dropped when we're more desparate for points than ever, in favour of some completely untested pairings. I'd like to buck the trend and not be anti-Faldo(and I do think he got it right today) but he makes it so fcukin hard - wtf is that lineup? I'm hoping against hope its a masterstroke... |
