Re: British Open

Els to make cut at 15/8 with Paddies

He's playing better than yesterday, weather is better too, currently +10 after 9 and cut may well be +9.

Worth a small wager imho

Re: British Open

Amazing performance but he really was thrashing the ball everywhere on the closing 3 holes, how on earth he managed to scramble and make it 2 pars and a bogey was amazing, credit to him, most players would have been atleast +4 there. But can't see him keeping it up this weekend - conditions sound dreadful tomorrow, wouldn't count anyone that makes the cut out of it - but better see who actually makes it first!

Re: British Open

That was for Norman by the way, not Harry, who was brilliant over the closing holes!

Re: British Open

That'll do me

Well done Ernie!

After last year I took 6/1 on Harry winning a major in '08

Will my dream come true?

Re: British Open

Selections from the system thread(http://thedailypunt.com/forum/tdp-me...tml#post527887) plus some normal reasoning since there's so many other factors in play here:

Wind is due to blow very hard tomorrow, and that could turn the event into a war of attrition, and so I've gone for a bias toward the more solid/consistent players this week...Garcia and Harrington are fantastic wind players, but their prices look a little tight at the moment.

Just a small toe in the water tho:

2pts KJ Choi @ 7.80
0.75pts Poulter @ 28
0.5pts Appleby @ 34
0.2pts Soren Hansen @ 75
0.1pts Anthony Kim @ 130
0.1pts Leonard @ 170
0.1pts Ross Fisher @ 190

Choi has been out of form for a while, but his round today was magnificent, and in the worst of the conditions yesterday he played an almost flawless +2. He showed to me that he knows whats needed on this course, solid drives and safe irons to the middle of the greens, and his nerve on the putting surface is superb. As a frontrunner, he's second only to Tiger IMO, and should be very tough to catch tomorrow.

Poulter is striking the ball better than anyone - let a couple of shots go late on today and was a little unlucky with the putter, but confidence is high and has a shot here. Also a great +2 in dreadful conditions yesterday. One to lay off tho if still in contention on Sunday.

Appleby has been going about his business quietly, and has contended in majors plenty before, so I'm expecting slow if unspectacular progress tomorrow. Can reel off the pars very quickly. Soren has been in great form on the European tour, which is showing again here. His game is pretty complete when its on song, but again, one to lay if still up there this time tomorrow, as he's a dreadful Sunday contender.

Kim I had my doubts about before this week, but he doesnt seem as averse to wind and rain as expected, and has bags of talent. If he can keep his head, we might just see some magic. Leonard finally showed his ability on windy links courses today, battling back from behind the cut mark to qualify safely. None more suited round here than him. Finally, Fisher is in a rich vein of form, and is giving himself plenty chances on the greens. Drives the ball a mile, and again, confidence is very high which could be very important as the wind sends the ball all over the place.

I agree with that, always fancied Choi to pick up a major sooner or later. I remember saying prior to The Masters this year that I was gona back him as my main pick for every major in '08 but he went off form a fair bit beginning with The Masters so I didnt bother after that unfortunately. I agree with the frontrunner comment and I think the 6/1 is worth taking on due to the above but also because the leaderboard is...

Choi -1
Norman Par
Villegas +1
The Field +2 or more

I really dont fancy either of Norman or Villegas to win so that gives Choi a 3+ shot lead on everyone else which is a healthy margin.

Its also tempting to back Van De Velde at 150/1 just for a laugh

Re: British Open

Yeah I remember that Choi pick muze, he's deffo got the major mentality and has won huge tournies before and as you say, the leaderboard really only starts behind him at plus 2.

Weather looks horrendous at the moment - just a day to minimise the damage I think.

Re: British Open

Weather is pretty bad isn't it?
You tend to forget living in these climes

Following you on some of those Beans, though pleased enough with my pre - tournie selections.

Have added Mc Dowell, he's certainly talking the talk & the weather should not bother him.

Re: British Open

Greg Normans actually legit then, every chance of winning from his position!

Final 2 pairings...

Norman +2.....4/1
Harrington +4.....11/4
Choi +4.....9/2
Wakefield +5.....25/1

Still like my Choi price as defo has a better chance than 6/1 to win. Shame he couldnt hold onto the lead as he had a pretty average round today, didnt really get his putter going.

Im gona have a wee punt on Simon Wakefield, The Open has thrown up some dodgy winners over the last 10 years or so (Lawrie, Curtis, Hamilton) so why not again, as thats a pretty massive price from his current position imo.

Re: British Open

To be honest, I haven't the foggiest where the value lies at the moment.

Layed the main remaining punts(2.75pts Choi at 5.7, 0.7pts Fisher @ 27, 0.6pts Kim @ 21, 0.4pts Poulter @ 55) for a 0.7pts profit, and retire to think again.
