Course info

National Golf Course - Albatross

Acknowledged as one of the finest championship courses in Europe, both by the professional and the amateur golfer who have measured their talents against the course. The Albatross has also been nominated as a "Ryder Cup" venue. It is not kept for "Top World players". The Albatross is a demanding course. From the back tees the total length of over 7000 yards is not the main difficulty: It is the diversity of shots. The diversity of both "links course", "target golf", and "water hazards" and "bunkers" will create the demand for a full set of clubs.

After a German won in Germany, it could be the turn of a Frenchman to win in France.

There's a strong local contingent looking to repeat Martin Kaymer's home-soil heroics in Munich and the good news for the crowds flocking to Le Golf National in Paris is that Frenchmen have an excellent recent record in their home Open.

Jean-François Remesy won this tournament back-to-back in 2004 and 2005 and in the second of those triumphs Frenchman placed first, second and fourth (two of them).

One of those tied in fourth was Francois Delamontagne and he is the home player I'm drawn to this week.

The 29-year-old from Rennes seems to play some of his best golf around this time of the year and that's certainly been the case of late.

After making little impression on leaderboards since a top ten in the Alfred Dunhill Championship back in December, he's reeled off a hat-trick of top eight finishes in his last three starts.

He was tied eighth in the Bank Austria GolfOpen, fourth in the St Omer Open and then sixth in last week's BMW International Open in Germany.

Delamontagne has had excellent greens in regulation figures in all those three tournaments and adding in the Challenge Tour he's recorded top four finishes in his last two tournaments in France.

This has been a good event for outsiders so Delamontagne gets the nod at 70/1.

After his strong finish in Germany, Robert Jan-Derksen also looks a decent punt at 66/1.

The Dutchman started with a 74 in round one but his challenge gathered pace with two 69s and he finished like a train with a final round 65 to end up tied sixth.

That made it three top 10s in his last five starts for the former Dubai Desert Classic winner and one of those was a second place in the BMW Asian Open.

Those finishes are enough to get us interested anyway but Derksen also brings plenty of course form to the table.

This is the seventh straight year he's played Le Golf National and four times in the last six visits he's made the top 25.

Last year he finished 12th, finishing third for greens in regulation, and had he putted half-decently would have gone very close. Even then he finished only six shots behind the winner so his improved putting of late will hopefully make the difference.

At four points higher, 70/1, John Bickerton is worth a look.

The Englishman put a run of three missed cuts behind him with an excellent third place in Germany last week.

He drove the ball superbly, topping the driving accuracy stats, and hit 75% of his greens too. No wonder he said later that it was "probably the best I've played tee-to-green all year."

Relatively unnoticed he's racked up three wins in the last four seasons, the second of those a one-shot victory at this course in 2006.

Bickerton, as is common, missed the cut when trying to defend his crown last year but with no pressure on him this time his excellent long game should put him in the mix again.

A second Frenchman who could shine is Michael Lorenzo-Vera.

Although he hasn't played in this tournament, he does seem to flourish on his home patch having posted a second, a fifth, a sixth and a 12th in four of his last six Challenge Tour events on French soil.

Lorenzo-Vera went into the notebook after a superb final round 66 at the Apulia San Domenico Grand Final saw him win the tournament and finish as number one on the 2007 Challenge Tour rankings.

Life on the main European Tour hasn't always been easy but there have been plenty of bright moments - a top 10 in just his third start and a second place in the Volvo China Open.

He was clearly nervous on that occasion but it was good experience in the bank and, playing on home soil, the 23-year-old should feel more comfortable this time when he's surrounded by family and friends.

Lorenzo-Vera missed the cut last week but before that he closed 68-67 to finish tied 21st at Celtic Manor.

Given his age and experience it will be a case of him popping up with big results after missed cuts and vice versa and hopefully, on his native turf, this could be one of his 'on' weeks.

Take the 150/1.

Martin Kaymer and Stewart Cink seemed to benefit from positive experiences at the US Open by winning the week after.

And after recovering from a first round 78 to make the cut with a one-under 70 before closing with an even par 71, Soren Hansen left Torrey Pines in good heart.

Before that trip he'd finished eighth in Austria where his putting was particularly impressive.

But it's his course form which really makes him a strong candidate at this event.

Runner-up last year, he was also third in 2005 and tied 10th in 2004.

Hansen was winless on the European Tour since 2002 before claiming a four-shot win in the Mercedes-Benz Championship in Germany last September.

Just one shot out of a play-off in Spain last month, Hansen is clearly in excellent nick and he represents a solid choice at the front of the betting given that we're taking bigger prices elsewhere.
