Will Mrs Doubtfire make the Ryder Cup Team

It seems unlikely that he's going to do it on merit judging by his latest performance......

BBC SPORT | Golf | Monty slumps to defeat in Arizona

....but is it worth the risk of the captain picking him anyway or has he shot his bolt?

Whadayareckon?

Monty slumps to defeat in Arizona

Montgomerie was the lowest ranked player remaining in the tournament

Colin Montgomerie crashed out of the WGC Match Play Championship with a 4&2 third-round defeat by Stewart Cink. The match was all square at the turn but Cink took the lead with a birdie at the 10th and pulled away, rolling in a 15-foot putt at the 16th for victory.

Re: Will Mrs Doubtfire make the Ryder Cup Team

Just spotted this.

No doubt Monty has been a good servant to the European Team over the years, but I don't see him making it this year. I don't see him being able to qualify outright.
Players like Lee Westwood, Padraig Harrington and Sergio Garcia are all seasoned campaigners who Faldo can use to nurse the rookies, so I don't see him having to feel the need to pick Monty as a wildcard.

To be honest mate, I agree and I hope you're right in a way.

He's not much of a team player, which I suppose is a good thing normally when you're in his line of work but in this case it's all about the influence he can have on the team and having him sulking his big sweaty arse off just because he's not playing well is just not going to have the effect that we really need.

BBC SPORT | Golf | Montgomerie slams Masters invites

Monty has been moaning that certain players have been given invitations to the The Masters, purely on 'commercial grounds' - the players being:
Jeev Milka Singh
Liang Wen-Chong
Prayad Marksaeng

He says it is a strange way to make up the field based on TV rights.

Just to give a bit of background - this is only the second Masters that Monty will be missing in 17 years. The articile doesn't come out and say it, but hints that Monty thinks he should have got an invite.

This man infuriates me. Yes he was a great player, multiple winner of the Order of Merit. He never won a Major which for such a proud man is a mighty burden to bear, and I am afraid that as his career is now on the slide, we are gonna be hearing more of his opinions on how he has been badly treated etc. etc.

I am gutted that he was not good enough to get into the world's top 50 and therefore qualify as of right for the Master's - as his record in the tournament over the last few years has been poor, so one to oppose in match bets and round bets!!

Yup, he's being a right twat these days - to only come out and say this the day after he failed to qualify says it all. He doesn't deserve to be there, and thats it.

Sure he is above these three in the rankings, but thats only because they dont get to play in all the big tournies like Monty has been able to - if its down to who's been playing better then there's no contest - if I remember rightly JM Singh was about 12 shots ahead of Monty at Doral in the World Championships a couple of weeks ago, not to mention how well the three have done in tournaments in their own country.

I'd much rather watch them than Monty duff his way to another missed cut anyway.

A joke post surely? Monty not a team player? He's one of the best team players around, never failed to turn on the goods in a Ryder Cup, and when he has been off colour slightly (when teamed with Lawrie for example) inspired and encouraged his rookie teammate to great things.

With Monty's record, where he always plays way way better than in strokeplay events, he'd be an automatic pick for me, unless the likes of Harrington/Garcia/Westwood all need picks, which seems unlikely with the new format.

He's ahead of them in the rankings, so he sure has more right to be there. And JMS is a European Tour player, so he has every chance that Monty has, the other two are not European Tour members, so if they can't earn a card for Europe, then that's down to not being good enough again surely?

Monty's wrong to complain now as it's always been this way, however that doesn't mean what he said is wrong.

Really, you'd rather watch two non-entities and a little know Asian player, than the best player not to have won major?

Re: Will Mrs Doubtfire make the Ryder Cup Team

He might be(arguably) the best player not to win a major, and on the form he had to get that title of course I'd much rather watch him, but this is all about whether i'd rather watch him now, and after seeing some of his rounds at the World Champs in Doral and at the Arnold Palmer a few weeks ago then yeah as he sulked his way round and looked a shadow of his former self, Milka Singh et al is a far more appealing prospect.

Re: Will Mrs Doubtfire make the Ryder Cup Team

Sorry THoP if you are expecting me to be a member of the campaign to save Monty's career then I am afraid you are going to be disappointed.
Doesn't really matter which sport we are talking about, but governing bodies need to ensure that their sport moves on, and invitations to their tournaments allow them to have an influence over the field. They are entitled to give these invitations to who they like. Surely there is more benefit in giving them to players who have a future in the game and can be inspirations to young players in their countries, rather than a player who (and i did put this earlier) was a great player, but couldn't win it in his prime so won't win it now or in the future. I also can't see many kids in the UK looking to Monty for inspiration either.

Back on to the Ryder Cup topic i notice the fun is starting earlier - Azinger has come out and said that he thinks Monty should play, of course he does, nothing like a bit of sh1t stirring and the weaker the team he faces the better for an American point of view.

Re: Will Mrs Doubtfire make the Ryder Cup Team

Just thought I'd say hello THoP.

Hello

Our paths haven't crossed before as you seem to only be interested in poker and golf. You seem like a pretty intelligent guy and I'd be interested in hearing more of your views if you could spare the time to venture into other areas on here.

I'm not asking you to name the Eurovision Song Contest winner or comment on the state of Komp's underpants but if you get bored and feel like adding your thoughts to general chat then I'll look forward to reading them.

Hoping to speak soon

Ha, cheers One. Probably because this is the "Daily Punt" and I simply don;t punt. I play poker because I win, and have the odd golf punt - usually just the majors - because I'm a golf nut. I hate losing money, so you'll not really see me elsewhere. I'll try to make an effort though

Must be a long lost member of the family .

I detest seeing my money leaving me . Only cheer up when it comes back from the bookies with some new friends.

I usually back the rugby, 'cause I know a bit about it and it pays. Other than that I paper trade the other members on various sports, after a while you can seperate the chaff from the wheat (or vice-versa) and it has to be said there are a few good brains in here .

Bets of luck to you .
