Re: The Open - 19th July
A few 3ball/matchbets too...will need to avoid just taking the same players as in the outrights as need to spread the risk a little...
3balls
Petterson v Immelman/Faldo @ 2.10
More of a 2ball this one with old Faldo in there. Immelman seems a little out of touch at the moment and missed the cut at Loch Lomond. On his day he'd be favourite in this match up, but if he doesn't hold it together early on could begin to leak strokes left right and centre early, and the steady Petterson should have the consistency to win this tomorrow.
Milka Singh v Lehman/O'Hern @ 3.25
Don't think the Indian should be the outsider in this trio - he's the one that's been playing on the European tour and has been consistent all through the year(his two perhaps below par performances have been in the US Majors. Lehman and O Hern both have to adjust from the US Tour, an adjustment they couldn't make last year when they missed the cut at Hoylake, and MS looks a touch overpriced.
Weekley v Sheehan/Bevan @ 1.78
Big Boo should have no problems here against a couple of no names - he put in a decent opening 2 rounds at Loch Lomond before falling away, but should start strongly again, while the other two have histories of missed cuts and lower ranking events...no problems(I hope.)
Tournament Matchbets:
Rose v VJ Singh @ 1.98
Verplank v Toms @ 1.92
Clarke v Bjorn @ 2.14
Phew...that'll do...let's get this party started!

Re: The Open - 19th July
Goosen at 50/1 is my pick. Unfortunately I forgot it was Thursday today and only got back from holiday a couple of days ago so its all been a bit weird and hectic and I didnt get on. Nice to see Goosen is -4 already The other player I was interested in was Ogilvy at about the same price.
Im still having Angel Cabrera flashbacks. I wake in the night sweating screaming Argentinian swear words

Re: The Open - 19th July
I'm watching the Open on the bbc and they had Lineker interviewing Canbrera in Spanish and translating it as he was going along , I don't understand Spanish but it was very good , well done Lineker for the effort

Slightly dissapointing start for the outrights and other bets, but a couple of big rounds tomorrow and its game on again.
3balls a bit better as Weekley cruises his by 5 with a great round, Petterson sneaks past a decent looking Immelman, wiith Milka Singh shooting an absolute stinker of 77 after birdieing the first.

Re: The Open - 19th July
no one mentioned garcia, and he storms away lol typical. Well Woods is in a handy postition and hopefully a nice 18 tomorrow around 66 would be a real great score and send him on his way to winning, if he is winning or thereabouts going into final day if hes in the final two i just reckon the way he is speaking and concentrating on his golf makes him the ideal winner!

Re: The Open - 19th July
Not been around for a long time but I did compile a fairly lengthy post very late last night only to lose all the data when I was logged out trying to submit it. It was well past my usual Horlicks time so I gave up as I hadn't saved it anywhere.
I enjoyed reading the thread. Quality input as usual Beanie. When did you get so clued up on golf? Last year I remember you were a relative novice at this great game.
It already has the makings of a cracking tournament and a close contest come Sunday afternoon and I have a feeling we might get a European winner.
Good luck everybody.

Re: The Open - 19th July
Good to see you again Andy .GIF) Not clued up as such, but had a good few months doing some trading on ebay on the pga and euro tour events on betfair, and now I've a bit more time on my hands its prob time to start posting a bit on it(ill advised or otherwise.)
Garcia's general game was strong as expected today - and his putting was even better Thought Woods looked pretty damn good today - could have stormed away with things in the first 6 holes after creating atleast 5 big birdie/eagle chances, although I missed his blip on 12/13 so not sure what happened there. Hopefully he doesn't come out and tear things up tomorrow and keeps it all interesting. Weather forecast is for the wind to pick up in the afternoon so the early birds could well have a shot or 2 advantage tomorrow.
Will have a look through some 3balls in a mo.

Re: The Open - 19th July
Not gonna touch my outright positions until after the 2nd round as now the players have had a day get the feel for the course and atmosphere, I'm hopeful a few of them will get the finger out and play to their ability.
3balls:
Mickelson v Westwood/Taniguchi @ 1.98
One of Westwood's problems in the last few months has been shooting a decent 2nd round, again obvious at Loch Lomond where he shot a 74 on the back of an opening 65. He played ok today but still looked like the odd double bogey was waiting just around the corner. Mickelson was superb with his irons today, again a bit ropey with the driver, and took more putts than usual, but on the whole looked by far the steadiest in his 3 ball and with the earlyish start time tomorrow we should see him under par after tomorrows 18. Taniguchi had a nice start but was a bit wayward on the back 9 - doesn't look consistent enough to maintain a good score for the whole 18.
Howell v Choi/Sterne @ 4.1
Big price on Howell here. Not a favourite for this by any means as Choi whacked it round in -3 today, but given the way these three finished their rounds the value must be with Howell. He was +4 after 3 holes, then rattled round the next 15 in -3, while Choi made his move early on and then struggled to maintain that form. Sterne had a slow start, a slow finish, and was pretty pedestrian in the middle bit 'n all. I think if Howell can come out and even just par the first 3, he'll go into the rest in a strong frame of mind and could nick the honours in this 3 ball.
Maybe another couple in the morning.

AS Tiger Woods stumbled from one disaster to another at Carnoustie last night and with only his fighting heart keeping him in contention, Sergio Garcia goes into the weekend with a two-shot halfway lead as solid favourite to become the first European to win the Open this century.
VCbet reported a massive £40,000 punt at 5-2 towards the end of play as the Spaniard, fifth in the last two Opens and top-ten in five of the last six, continued to settle a score with the great Angus links that cost him his pride and his tears in 1999.
Woods started with a replica of his opening shot in the Ryder Cup at the K Club, a pulled tee shot into the water. Out of bounds at the first, he ran up a double-bogey six and scrambled like mad to save par all the way round. A bogey at the last left him with a 74 for 143 and seven adrift.
There was none of the razzle-dazzle of Thursday's 65 from Garcia, but a par round of 71 for a six-under-par total of 136 on a tougher scoring day – only Niclas Fasth, Charley Hoffman, Mike Weir and Raphael Jacquelin broke 70– was further proof that the new belly putter has given super Sergio a new edge after two years of greens misery.
It was not what he holed – the longest putt was no more than the six-footer he made to save par on the monstrous 18th – but what he didn't miss. With the normal putter we are accustomed to seeing Garcia yip it all over the place from short range but yesterday he was as solid as a rock.
KJ Choi, backed in-running for £1,000 at 16-1 with Betfred, duplicated his opening 69 to move into second place on 138, one better than Garcia's veteran compatriot Miguel Angel Jimenez, who was only inches away from a hole in one at the 16th, and Weir.
Lurking a shot further back is Jim Furyk, now demoted to world No. 3 after Phil Mickelson's second place at Loch Lomond, and he heads the American challenge along with hillbilly Boo Weekley, playing in his first Open.
Asked whether he was aware of the great history of the world's premier championship, Weekley said: “If it ain't fishing I don't tend tobe interested. I don't really follow golf.”
After Woods had finished, he was a best-priced 7-1 behind the 5-2 favourite Garcia, who was 4 on Betfair with Woods 8.
Garcia's round began with a potential disaster, a four-iron shank on the first hole which hit a woman spectator on the thigh, leaving him with a near-impossible pitch out of tangly rough.
But he had the shot of the week to get himself back on track, the recovery finishing only inches from the hole.
Unsettled by that early mistake, Garcia, with two birdies wiped out by two bogeys – a three-putt at the fourth and a tee shot into a fairway bunker at the 11th – never looked quite the same player as on the first day.
“It was more of a grinder's day,” he said. “I was hoping for a little better than what I did. But I'm definitely in a good position to win my first Major.
“The new putter? It feels more comfortable than the little one and it takes pressure of the other parts of my game because I have confidence with it.
“Before I couldn't see the lines on the short putts and I was thinking ‘Don't miss the green because you'll be making bogey'. But I'm much more positive now.”
Korean ace Choi, who clearly doesn't understand the questions when he is interviewed in English which made for an amusing few minutes on the Beeb, arrived at Carnoustie after two wins in the States and is one of the form horses as long as you don't look too closely at his moderate Open record (best of 16th in 2004 from six visits).
The expected worsening weather today will test him (and others) as gusts of up to 22mph are predicted for the late afternoon just when the leaders are out, so there has to be a chance of someone springing out of the pack.
Cabrera, Goosen and Lee Westwood, at five behind, Els and Harrington at six, and Vijay Singh at seven are big names within striking distance along, of course, with Tiger. We're in for a humdinger!
In-running best prices at 7.30pm last night: 5-2 S Garcia, 7 T Woods, 9 KJ Choi, 20 E Els, M Weir, M A Jimenez, 25 R Goosen, 28 A Cabrera, 33 P Harrington, 40 L Westwood, B Weekley, 50 V Singh, 66 bar.
