Re: US Open 2007
This is on in 2 weeks
Always bet on the majors ever since I got hooked when I started betting back in 2003 on them. Had my biggest odds winner ever of anything in this major 2 years ago when I backed Michael Campbell at 245/1 pre tourny too, golf major betting has been kind to me.
So what are our pre tourny fancies for this?
Is Woods too short at 11/4? I cant see me being on him this time.
Is Mickelson good at 8/1? Im pretty sure id have a bit on at a slightly bigger price since he won that big tourny the other week and thus is in form once again.
What do we think to the 2 short odds players then?

Re: US Open 2007
I looked at the list for a while earlier and came up with 5 names for examination, any comments welcome on any.
I think Retief Goosen @ 33/1 is probably worth a shot as hes won this 2 times in the last 6 years and returned to some good form when leading at one point on the last day of the Masters last month.
Is it time for Justin Rose to put in a top performance @ 66/1? Ive seen him playing a bit recently and he looks really confident.
Tim Clark @ 100/1. Had a couple of close calls recently in majors.
Chris Di Marco @ 125/1. Hows this guy been getting on just lately? Hes run real close at some majors last few years, 2nd in a major for each of the last 3 years and thats obviously a good each way price there.
Angel Cabrera @ 150/1. Just like the player looks like he has good bottle to me but does he do well over in the states?

Re: US Open 2007
Ill add KJ Choi as a possible to that list as well @ 80/1 since he won that memorial last weekend so must be in top form. Hes one I always notice does good on the leaderboards anyway.

Re: US Open 2007
Mickelson has drifted out a bit cos of this wrist injury he incurred in a tournament he had to drop out of the other week. Hes having injections in it to prepare him for US Open, so tbh I reckon its best to hang loose on him and see how he fares in the opening round or 2 rather than back him pre tourny.

Re: US Open 2007
Good luck with those k33nan. Ive done my pre tourny bets (unless one of you guys comes up with something sweet to tempt me).
Goosen to win @ 29/1
The only player im backing to win pre tourny. Hes won it twice before and is cool as a cucumber, came tied 2nd at Masters last month, no reason he cant go close again.
Goosen to place top 5 @ 7/1
Placed in the top 5 in 7 from his last 25 majors so these odds are good enough for me. Basically the same as taking him each way but I just wanted to stake more on the top 5 rather than the win.
Justin Rose to place top 5 @ 9.5/1
Hes in his best form ever right now. Only played 6 tournies on PGA tour this year but hes placed in the top 5 in 3 of them including last months masters and runner up via playoff in his last tourny. Has a good major pedigree anyway, he has competed in 14 majors and come top 5 in 3 of them.
I also have tiddler top 5 bets on Tim Clark and Chris DiMarco at 21/1 and 33/1 respectively. Neither are on good form at all but have a good history of going close at majors between them so ill chance those high odds for a few pennies. Im not backing either to win as they are a bit shite at actually winning, a bit like Colin Montgomerie.
I shant be going back for anything else off my own back until after the cut at the earliest.

Re: US Open 2007
i've come close early doors in tournies recently, but the guys haven't seemed to have carried it on through the event. hopefully luck will change this week. my selections are...
furyk-a good price for a player who has already won the US Open. He hits a lovely ball, and has a solid short game, local player with lots of support, definitely got a shout.
scott- recent form is superb. might not win it- does he choke? or the other guy play well? but anyways, the way he is playing he should run close.
Scott Verplank is a very steady player, and has two top 10 finshes in his last two starts and already won this year, he could be tough to beat. His driving accuracy is the key (6th in the rankings) so that will be where he will be strong.
Stewart Cink is one the most in-form players, three top 5 finshes in last 5 events, and also solid at the US Open,a real consistent one who is never fancy. could easily contend.
outside bets would be imada, had a 16 and 9 in previous US open starts, 2nd at the AT+T recently, could be a lot lower in-running. Mike Weir has one of the best US Open records of recent times, three times top 10 in last 4 events, he can again figure based purely on that record. His recent form, has not been great, ( 20, 19, 24, 37, MC, 39) but at the price can definitely give you a run for your money.
Aaron Baddeley is a wild card, but if he gets going, he could be hard to stop. He is fearless and has the temperament, a great putter, he could hole some crucial putts down the stretch. Recent results have been 6, 52, 10, 43, 37 and 9, so he has been consistent.
The other Arron, Oberholser will also be a good punt for this. His scrambling stats have been very good this year and has made 16 consecutive cuts.
i don't want to back the whole field, but so far these are where my cash are going. seen stricker tipped by a few, stenson, and o'hair and also ryan moore is getting a lot of press for being an all-around player.
i've gone for the approach that it won't be woods or mickleson, and so by taking longer range guys like verplank, cink means i can have a few more. not having woods as i don't think 3-wood will be enough for him here, his putting isn't as good as it has been and he is just too wild.phil-his wrist. i don't know how fit he is and could withdraw at any moment. good luck all.

Re: US Open 2007
Phil Mickleson would be the bet,but his wrist injury has put paid to that bet.
Vijay Singh is the man im pinning my hopes on,hes doing well in the averages, rank 12th for putting 12th for eagles a good stat when you got to play the 4th which is 607 yrds, although the 667 yard par 5 is probably not reachable in 2 shots,5th in birdies and 2nd in scoring averages.20's is a fair price.

Mickelson and Rose have the best putting averages this calendar year. Harrington and Els are right up there as well.

Re: US Open 2007
Furyk @15/1 for me. Price is a bit short but he's one of the most accurate drivers on tour which will be vital this weekend.
Jose Maria Olazabal is too tempting at 150/1. His experience may get him through this horrible course while others around him crash and burn. He has shown patches of his old form this season and i'm gonna chance him.
Trevor Immelmann @66/1: Read during the week that Imellmann lost loads of weight due to illness earlier on in the year which explains his general rubbishness this year. He claims hes feeling 100% again and by all accounts he played well in practice yesterday(Got a hole in 1 on the monster par 3!)
Sergio Garcia to miss the cut @5/2. Gonna throw a few quid on this as I reckon Sergio will struggle this weekend. His driving has gone to shit lately and unless hes had a major improvement of late then he could be heading home riday evening.
Verdict:
20 Points E/W on Furyk
10 Points E/W on Immelmann @66/1
5 Points E/W on Olazabal @150/1
20 Points Garcia to miss the cut @5/2
Good Luck All.
