How Do You Do At Online Poker?

Hi, not often i come in here but ive been thinking a lot about poker lately. Im only thinkin about it as its so popular at the moment. It really is the new rock and roll. Folks just new to gambling to old pro's that have played for years seem to be so into online poker and i can see the appeal.

I've got other things to be getting on with to start losing my money to you all and i know its a game of great skill and reading the play of people etc. I'm just wondering if there is gonna be a huge fallout over the popularity of the game and i expect there to be a lot of casualities.

There must be millions of well paid young men in Britain that could easily lose a months wages in a night playiong these things. could that happen to you? Have you lost a months wages? Would you say your possibly addicted to it and it takes up most of your evenings?

Im just interested thats all as it seems like the world and its mate is playing it.

Jesus - you must be getting a nose bleed in here Komp?

I can see your points Komp but i find Poker more controlled money wise compared to gambling. Gambling i just throw my money on everything. The potential is there to be seen for all in Poker also but i have left myself to just playing freerolls everyday to get my skills up and i feel i am doing pretty good. Christianu found me a site that requires no deposits or anything, you are giving the opportunity to enter and win money for free.

Am i addicted? In a way i am, i see it more as being a hobby that passes time for me. I like the adrenaline rush i get also, cant beat an all in when your pretty far in a tournament.

Re: How Do You Do At Online Poker?

Gambling at anything is gambling if you don't know what you are doing.
Sports betting is gambling if you just throw your money at anything.
But it's profitable and a legitimate source of income if you do it right.
Same goes for poker. It can be a gamble if you just throw your money at it, but if you do it with skill it can be a source of income.

Poker is indeed the new rock n roll. Exploded in popularity. There's no gender/age/race barriers/divisions to worry about. A game for all to play.
I mean that's put it ahead of most sports already.
And all you need is a deck of cards and some money/chips.

Yeah someone could lose a months wages online in a night. And alot probably do. But they could also win a months wages, and it seems like "free" money.
Therein lies the appeal. Thing is it's far from free money, in the long run the better players win the cash. But the sucker comes back for more and more thinking "this time it's gonna be different". There's a sucker born every minute.

I mean consider this. Some people will search out every shop, check every deal, do everything possible just to get a tenner off a TV or save themself 20p on a bag of chips. They might have all sorts of schemes/plans worked out. Have all sorts of saving accounts where they made sure they got the best interest. Only buy the best gear for everything etc.
Yet they're quite prepared to throw their money at something they know absolutely nothing about - ie poker. Why is this ?

Gambling has a kind of romantic stigma/aura surrounding it. People believe it's luck and if the poker gods are with them they will win etc. They think it's all about bluffing ! Of course nothing could be further from the truth. There's plenty people who think they know how to play poker. The reality ? They know fuck all and many people (especially males) are too proud to admit it. Read poker books ? Bah, I know it all already etc.

Another danger with online poker is people coming in pissed or playing whilst pissed - a bad idea as many of you have testified. I'll certainly be playing all through the night an till the early hours scooping up the cash of the drunks.
It's like drinking driving - You think it won't affect you. Sometimes you get away with it. But sometimes you don't. Just luckily with poker the consequences are not fatal...and you can get up the next day and say ok, I'm never doing that again. But how many times do people stick to that ?

A good poker player is always willing to learn. He won't play drunk. He won't think he knows it all. Despite how I may come across I'm always wanting to try and improve my game. There's no room for ego.

The internet is of course one reason why poker has got so popular. Millions of people can play it now without having to go anywhere near a casino or other place. It's not quite as intimidating face to face and many people probably enjoy playing from the comfort of their own home. The internet has been great for gambling in general. Look at the success of betfair and internet poker. If I'd had enough cash I certainly would have gotten my fingers in those pies before they exploded. I can't see it declining anytime soon.

Great stuff Alien you answered a lot of my questions and believe you could be a formidable opponent due to what you already know to be true. I bet you the old pros must have loved it when all this internet stuff took off. Must have had many a good night drink in one hand cig in the other shouting out phrase like taking candy from a baby etc.

Re: How Do You Do At Online Poker?

Oh when it's sweet it's sweet but it can be a cruel, cruel game. You can do everything right - and still lose. That can be hard to swallow. You gotta think long term though.

Btw about free rolls - if yer totally skinty malinky lang leegs then aye ok but it's best to play for some amount of cash......I mean even if the buy in is $1 (53p or whatever)
Free rolls are good to get used to how the controls work....raising/folding etc.
Just getting used to it basically, but as far as improving your game goes I wouldn't pay too much attention to them.
I mean it's a no risk thing, you can't lose money yes that's true.
But because of this, often people do not play as they would if it were for "real". Hence alot of plays made etc are not realistic.
Just go on yahoo poker for fun and you will see what I mean - raise every hand no matter what.

Consider this strategy for freeroll - All in, every single hand, no matter what your cards are.

Now that strategy has a positive expectation. As there is no entry fees it can only win money. Eventually you'll get a prize doing it.

Some people do something not too far off of this for this exact reason.
What can you learn playing against that ?
Also the amount of time and effort you put into a free roll - it's usually not worth the rewards. I mean playing for 3 hours to get a half decent finish and only get $2. Better off flipping burgers.

If you go on the sites you'll find something to suit your bankroll, no matter how small. If you think you have no spare cash.....well say only drink 16 pints this weekend instead of 18. The price of 2 pints will get you many poker games. eg - you can get tournaments where the entry fees are as little as 50p and cash games where the max buy in is like £2.
Far better to do without a couple of pints or something and have a go at these than constant free rolls. Yes you can lose money but.......you can learn some important lessons in money managment. It's far better to be playing for real money, no matter how small, as you'll learn more about the game. Going all in with 2-7 off when it means fuck all if you lose is a little different than when you got your own cash behind it.

It's important to work out things like pot odds. If I call 10p for a diamond - what are my chances of hitting it ? Is there enough money in the pot to justify calling it ? Things you may not think about as much when it's meaningless free chips. Also tournament and cash play are alot different. So it's good to get experience on both. As long as you are getting pot odds / an advantage in a cash game you make the play...tournament...different story.

To illustrate this. You are heads up against a aguy. He goes all in. How althought it could never happen imagine I know what his cards are.
They are J-10 offsuit.

Now I hold A-k off suit. If it's a cash game, I call straight away knowing I have an edge - not a huge edge - but an edge nevertheless. Mathematically it's a sound call.

But take the same scenario at the start of a tournament. He raises my big blind all in. We're the only 2 people left. He has J10 and I have AK.
Do I call now ? No. Why not ? Well althought I have an edge...it's not huge and he could quite easily outdraw me and knock me out the tournament.
I can wait for an oppurtunity to put my chips in where I think I've got a much larger edge. No need to do it there.
At the very start of a tournament for a tiny blind which is nothing compared to my stack it's just not worth calling. Of course if my stack was say only double the big blind then yes, I would call. As you may not get another chance to pick up a hand with such a small stack in relation to the big blind and you believe you are ahead.

You see how the same situation can require a different play depending on whether it's cash or tournament or what stage of the tournament it is?

Anyway here's a quick tale which just happened to me......surley this must have been a drunk....

I have AK diamonds and call for $1. A few others call. The big blind raises to $6. I have better position and call. One other person calls.

The flop comes 9 A 4 I think it was. Two hearts on board.

Now the inital raiser has about $35 in front of him, he pauses for a moment.....then goes all in. I call this and the other person folds.
He flips over ....... J 7 off. Turn and river are no help and I collect about $40 from him and $8 or so from other calls.

What was this person thinking ? I have no idea. Was he trying to bluff ? Perhaps. Was he drunk ? I would hope so as it was utter awful play.

Re: How Do You Do At Online Poker?

Tournament fees work like this.
There's the main part of the cash plus the entrance fee, usually 10% of the first figure.

Example ...

$5 + $1

It costs you $6 to enter this tournament. 5 + 1

$5 of this goes towards the prize fund for the tournament which you can win and the $1 is the entry fee which the site host keeps.

$5 + $1 are bad value tournies....the entrance fee should be 10% maximum.
Here it is 20%. You can normally find some $5 + $0.50 though.
There's tournaments with even cheaper buy ins on many sites as well.
$1 + $0.10 etc

Exactly how the prize structure is broken down depends on amount of players etc etc....it will usually tell you. A classic example of a single table tournament is 10 players where the prizes are...

1st 50% of money
2nd 30% of money
3rd 20% of money
