Re: Absolute Poker/ Freerolls

It's a harsh beat christanu but may I ask why you were calling with Q6 ?
Were you the big blind ? If not you shouldn't be calling with Q6 in a tournament when you have plenty of chips. There is no need for it.
It's the kinda hand that gets you into trouble, win a small pot or lose a big one. Btw I'm not saying that cos the person outdrew you - but Q6 suited or not is not the kind of hand you wanna be calling with.

I dont know about that Alien, maybe that is something ive to learn about. I dont call wtih any daft hand, quite the opposite but i was getting tired of the games as slowly my chips were falling with nothing coming out on the flop after getting "good hands". I was small blind by the way and i thought id just give it a pop as there were 2 people who called, one check (the big blind). I said 4 called but it was two others who actualy called then me and then the ehck, just didnt specify. I cant say if i wasnt on small blinds i would not of called cos i may well have done. Circumstances i just felt i had to start putting myself about as my chips were falling with the blinds increasing. I guess i should always stay disciplined would you suggest?

Im open to all opinions as thats why i posted it up. After that though i was nothing more than unlucky. The edge i had was huge going into the river.

Re: Absolute Poker/ Freerolls

Unfortunately not, its all random, but hopefull at some point we might bump into each other. They switch tables around as the number of players decreases so theres a small chance at some point we might cross paths.

Logged in as Christianu, you using Kompressaur? Let us know how your doing as its good seeing how the other person is doing like as me and Kiko usually do.

Re: Absolute Poker/ Freerolls

Oh yeah when you put your chips in , in that situation you were miles ahead I'm not disputing that.
But Q6 is a nothing hand. It can't make the nut straight. For it to be any use you need both a queen and a 6 to fall or 2 queens or 2 sixes and even then you could be behind.
Take flops like Q 7 2 rainbow (all different suits).......if you bet that flop with Q6, you either get called/raised by someone beating you, or people will fold.
Hence you can win a small pot, or lose a big one. When you have a choice you want your cards to have a chance of making the best hand, that's not as likely with a hand like Q6. Far better to call win something like J-10 suited. It can make the nut straight...in fact with J10 it's always the nut straight. If one of the cards pairs it's a decent, but not great kicker. Many possibilities to make the best hand.

Sometimes the good hands you call with, you will miss flop after flop...nothing you can do about it. But dont start calling with trash hoping to catch something - a common saying. Don't go throwing good money(or chips) after bad.

If blinds have been eating away at your stack and you are missing everything then dont limp in with hands like Q6 trying to hit something. There's 4 other people in the pot or whatever, chances are you are going to lose.
If you're short on chips you need to get something which resembles a half decent hand and go all in with it. If everyone folds you win the blinds...fair enough...take them and you got a bigger stack for your next try.
Now if someone calls...as you are all in it's far more likely only one, or possibly two people will have called. Hopefully only one. Already your odds have increased greatly as you are up against only one opponent.

Even if you've gone all in with the worst hand, you can still win.
If you say pick up K10 suited and go all in with it....and are called by AQ. You're not that far behind. Still every chance you could outdraw him. But against multiple opponents chances are you will be beat.
You'd be better off going all in pre-flop with the Q6 pre-flop if you were short than just calling with it....although from what I gather you were small blind hence would have another round of cards to come, so it wouldnt be needed.

Tournaments are different from cash. You need to keep a decent stack if you are gonna have a decent chance. A good gauge is - if you don't have 10 times the big blind you are short stacked. Sometimes even if it means putting chips in knowing you are behind, you have to take the risk to get the chips.
I mean you could wait all day.......finally you get AA and go all in for 600, problem is everyone else has tonnes more chips and five people call the 600 and of course one of them beats you. You need to make sure you keep up with the chips as people fall out the tournament.
Tournament strategy is an important thing. As blinds increase, you have to loosen your play up, blind stealing becomes much more important.

From what you describe there christanu what I would have suggested is, ok yer short stacked. You need to double up.
You're small blind with Q6...fold this. You are now button and have a full round of cards to come. You need to double up before the big blind gets back to you....if the big blind is gonna take a serious dent out your stack .. ie you dont have at least 10 times it. So you are gonna have to go all in before it gets back to you. You wait on something that resembles a hand, go all in and hope for the best.

Keep an eye out though......say there are three large stacks at the table to play before you....one raises....the next re-raises......and the next guy goes all in. If these are big stacks relative to the blinds they are likely to have decent hands. Always better to be the aggressor than calling someone else's big raises. Also for best chance you wanna be heads up, not in a 4 way pot.

Don't be scared to throw your chips in when you are low and have to. The risk of having shiter cards is far out weighed by the fact you need to double up. I liken it to having 15 at blackjack against a dealers 10 upcard.
Basic strategy says take a card and you should. (unless you are card counting and the count indicates otherwise)
Ok you will probably bust but.....the risk of busting is outweighed by the risk of the dealer beating you anway.

Re: Absolute Poker/ Freerolls

Cheers for your input Alien , i understand and implement a lot of what you said already and its all a learning curve for me. I am prone to call sometimes with a daft hand as i get frustrated and agitated and that was the problem here, but i understand how you have to bet when the odds are favouring yourself but i was hoping to get lucky and got unlucky which is probably small justice.

Ill have a look at the site and forum too.
