Phil Hellmuth takes down National Heads-Up title

Hellmuth celebrated his first big poker tournament win since 2003 last month - The National Heads-Up Poker Championship. A great player and a great character im sure some of you know.

At the bottom is a link to his articles on the tournament and each of the 6 rounds he had to play and battle through, a fun read

Just a snippet from one article (he drew Men 'the master' Nguyen in the first round, talk about a tough draw! )

Quote:
One interesting hand came up when I called before the flop with the 76, and Men checked with the 5♣ 5. The flop was 9-8-4 rainbow, and we both checked. The turn was my dream card, the 5♠. Men checked his set of fives, and I bet $800 into the $1,600 pot with my straight. Now, unbelievably, Men just called me! The last card was a deuce, and Men checked yet again. I bet $2,500 into the $3,200 pot, and Men studied awhile and just called again. My hat is off to him for losing the absolute minimum on this hand. Anyone else in the world would have raised with their set of fives at some point, so all I can say is, “Well played, Men.”

How he didnt lose more money there with the set is amazing imo. A set heads up is a big hand

There loads of great articles from Hellmuth to read as well as the Heads Up ones as well.

Nice to see him winning something. Yes he's a baby, yes he's a moaner but he's a character and a fantastic player. Always interesting to see him play.
I bet he still had something to moan about even though he won

Probably did Alien, probably was annoyed at a bad beat he got on Ultimate Bet or sumthin! He is a sweet player theres no doubt about that.

I heard theres gonna be a Hellmuth movie about his life. Well the movie ends where he wins the world series, was it in 87? Well it ends there anyway. Rumour that Hayden Christensen is gonna play him (aka Anakin Skywalker)

From Darth Vader to Hellmuth! :loon

Theres also going to be an Amarillo Slim movie (probably not really a poker film but of course it will feature), maybe Nicolas Cage playing him.

There's a few poker player biopics that's supposed to be in the works such as Robert Duvall playing Doyle Brunson but mostly a few fictional pieces such as the occasionally touted Lucky You starring Eric Bana and Robert Duvall as a pair of poker players who happen to be son and father, which boasts a boatload of cameos from genuine poker players.

Hellmuth = 89 champ iirc.

Point ending it there? Noone cares who he was in 89. It's NOW that he's someone, now poker is open and not underground. Seems silly to end it there.
