A Thread About Whatever
I asked my sister today what i was doing this time last year. She said it was 'Terry The Wasp Christmas' and i remembered. Im gonna click my sig to my playlist and browse the net for a bit. Seems like months since i did. Anyhow to start us off how about a link about imaginary numbers?
A Visual, Intuitive Guide to Imaginary Numbers | BetterExplained
Why do i like them? As it's all too clever for me. I think im missing out on something special i should know about. Red might mean run son but numbers dont add up to nothing. sorry that was a neil young line for those that ws wondering why i appear to be talking nonsense. I still dont know anything at all about what that last link page is talking about. I quite like the idea though of trying to think or define nothing though.

I know, they’re still strange to me too. I try to put myself in the mind of the first person to discover zero.
Zero is such a weird idea, having “something” represent “nothing”, and it eluded the Romans. Complex numbers are similar — it’s a new way of thinking. But both zero and complex numbers make math much easier. If we never adopted strange, new number systems, we’d still be counting on our fingers.

Re: A Thread About Whatever
I'll join in that as it's Xmas.
You are a great guy Komp I rate you up with my mates.
I rearly want to help the board and god knows you have super stars like ODM Kiko Slickster MP etc.
My view is where do you want to go from here?
Is it just a board or something more?
It needs a quantum leap in my view.

Re: A Thread About Whatever
I discovered zero whilst i was thinking about something else that had nothing to do with zero. So what is zero then i hear you all ask. zero is ...bah it cant be something. nothing is something that doesnt happen. It is a name given to the opposite of something. Maybe everything doesnt have an opposit and we're just fools to try and make something from nothing. Bah im confused. What role does negative numbers play in our world and why did i learn them at school?

Similarly, Roman Numerals were built when we were still learning to count — zero wasn’t even invented yet! Math is a software system that gets better over time, and Roman Numerals were due for an upgrade

But zero didn’t solve everything; subtraction still had problems. What happens when we take 5 from 3? One solution is to throw up our hands and say “it’s a bug and it’s undefined”, but we’ll do better.
We can think about the problem differently, and entertain the possibility that a number can be “negative” — a number that is less than nothing! (Pretty mind-bending, no?).
There are many interpretations (a lack of cows, a debt of cows) and negatives were invented to handle this “bug” in subtraction. Of course, it took a few thousand years to accept this new feature — negative numbers were still controversial in the 1700s!

why would you want to take 5 from 3? What purpose does have less than 1 have in our 'need 1 to exist' plane? Soz yes ive just had a smoke but it's just got me thinking. theis thread could equally and even less than, have pictures of women with large pendulous breasts. aye i cant get get it and maye its just not worth worring about. Analogue does not mix with digital and maybe our maths is nothing more than some primevil compulsive disorder. We have no need to count thngs really and eve less need to know what would happen if we had x amount of less than. I suppose its just a pardoxical thing. woooo mindbending etc I quite like paradoxical things mind.
Here's a place worth more of a look later for me

It just doesnt get any better than this does it? I was gonna turn it into a '2007' thread but there's room for that too no doubt.

You: What’s 1/3?
Me: Um, .33 repeating.
You: Ok. What’s 1/3 + 1/3?
Me: 2/3
You: Sure, but do it in decimals.
Me: Um, .33 repeating plus .33 would be… .666 repeating.
You: Great. Now what’s 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3, in decimal?
Me: Uh… .33 repeating plus .33 repeating plus .33 repeating… is .99 repeating.
You: But doesn’t 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 1? So .99 repeating = 1.
Me: What manner of trickery is this?

Re: A Thread About Whatever
I assure you Komp that you're not missing out on much. Many, many years ago I learned all about imaginary and complex numbers. It was all so great and life changing that I'd not given them a second thought from then until now

How about some edge waves? Much more interesting

Re: A Thread About Whatever
just doesnt fit does it?
It dont need no leap Nick im afraid it just needs the work to be done. Whilst i appreciate your walk on eggshells manner lets not kid ourselves that you are incapable of generating any interest from others without resorting to being an arsehole. You like to think your walking the line Nick but thats just the drink. I give you the keys to the door and any ways you can think improvement may lie then please mention them and i will support you in any way i can. You know where to walk the walk Nick.
What i like best about forums is that you can just talk shite like i just did there. what does walk the walk mean? It means i just wanted to put in some words that sounded the part
Hands up who likes jumbalaya?

Sometimes you just need to talk shite though. I've a few things I could/should be doing, but I just feel like messing around for a bit talking drivel. For some reason, I came here when I got that urge

Re: A Thread About Whatever
imaginary and complex numbers TS. I actually thought you meant jumbulaya first off aye we're just talking some numbers man. Numbers are hip (2bsquare)
Fcuk Edge Waves william now we're talking. Actually what are they ..aye theyre waves propagating along a free edge of an orthotropic plate, where the edge is inclined at arbitrary angle to a principal direction of the material. After deriving the governing equation and edge conditions, an edge wave ansatz is substituted into this system to reduce it to a set of algebraic equations for the edge wave wave number and wave vector. These are solved numerically for several typical composite materials although analytic expressions can be obtained in the case of special values of the material parameters and inclination angle. It is found that a unique edge wave solution, which generally exhibits oscillation as well as decay away from the free edge, exists in all cases, and its wave speed is independent of its direction of propagation along the plate ?
No more youtube vids Nick aye. Try keep them to the one thread . your starting to get gregarious.

Re: A Thread About Whatever
Sorry Komp, you're just stirring memories of my youth with all this maths stuff. I once did a project all about edge waves in the dim, distant past. They are quite good actually, they run perpendicular to the beach as the tide is coming in parallel to the beach. I think I'll stop there though, if you want to find out more, you know what to do I'd done my best to forget all that rubbish myself.
