Re: prison overcrowding
I'm sure someone will dispute it, but stats show that re-offending rates are higher for those given prison sentences than other punishments. Obviously you have to lock people up for serious crimes, but for the less serious offences you can't do it, if it's going to cause overcrowding in prison.
Not only are they more likely to re-offend if they are given a prison sentence (obviously not while they're in there, before someone says it, although someone willl suggest locking all criminals up and throwing away the key), but they're making the jobs of prison officers more difficult by causing the overcrowding. |

Re: prison overcrowding
I'd make them pay for their own stay.
They want to commit crime then they can pay for it even if it means docking benefits when they come out, they will soon think twice b4 comitting another crime. It may not work in a lot of cases like lifers etc but i bet it curbs your average villain like joyriders etc. |
