I remember that case, there was outrage cause a guy got life for stealing a pizza slice, it was his third offence. Ray Mallon tried the same approach and cause he was too successful they got rid of him!! work that one out. But i do believe he his the mayor of Middlesbrough, don't quote me on that as it's from memory. But he wanted to do zero tolerance the "powers that be" would not allow it!!! And he was getting very successful at it too. Literally camping on criminals doorsteps.

I could look this up but I cant be arsed but I think I am correct in saying that Amsterdam cleaned itself up by deporting all the junkies they could, helping heroin addicts by giving them prescription drugs and other facilities clinics etc free and making giving the cops the finger against the law (only a few years ago I think) Used to be full of heroin addicts, they now have a very small amount left and they are dying off, its not a problem with the younger people. Amsterdam is now one of the safest cities in Europe and has less heroin addicts then most.

Amsterdamer's get more pissed off with dog shite than they do with hard drugs although I think they have started to do something about that now as well.

I am not saying this is the way to go but it can work, the dutch are an odd lot of people (I like em) and I dont think their system would work over here but it does seem to have helped. Or we could build huge prisons and pay nice wages to work in em, that might work too

that first link is very old but it gets the idea across and talks about some of the stuff they have. The last one isnt exactly recent either but its an intresting read. I am sure there are plenty of up to date stats kicking around but I am just too tired to find em right now.

Not only are they more likely to re-offend if they are given a prison sentence (obviously not while they're in there, before someone says it, although someone willl suggest locking all criminals up and throwing away the key), but they're making the jobs of prison officers more difficult by causing the overcrowding.

i am with you on that one as i have been inside 3 times now and would rather go there than do com service or pay a fine

Ive been locked up loads of times for short sentances and i have to say that i hate prison and the loss of my freedom. I would hate to do a long stretch.

I say you make the prisons like Devils island where the folks are just penned up in small holes in the ground and given the minimum food possible and dont have any recreaction etc. How the hell it cost more to keep a prisoner in jail for a week than it does to put someone in a hotel is beyond me.

Regarding the decriminilation of drugs i would totally agree with the Axeman. If drugs aint cool then the kids wont be so keen. treat junkies like lepers. Let them have a day centre where they can go and take the finest heroin all day if they want and try and counsel them off it. Films like trainspotting etc never did the country much good.

About 10 years ago i couldnt get any hash (like now) i went round about 7 or 8 dealers houses but to no avail. The last place i went to i was offered heroin and i was so depressed i said 'just give me it' i had smoked it once before in similar circumstances a few months before but that was at a party and now here was i a heroin buyer. I went home with my new habit. As i walked home i considered it all and realised it could be a slippery slope so i stopped a junkie i knew in the street and asked him if he wanted to buy my 10 pound bag off me. He had a couple of joints on him so i swapped the heroin for them. If cannabis was easier to purchase then i wouldnt have needed to hang about circles that involved hard drugs. Cannabis is a bad drug too i would say and 9/10 new mental patients are heavy cannabis users. i am one of them and i aint proud.
