TV star Graham Norton has revealed he has taken "loads of drugs" and that the drug ecstasy is "just fantastic".

In an interview with Marie Claire magazine, he says: "The only time I took ecstasy was years and years ago. It was absolutely amazing. It was just fantastic - really, really fun."

He added: "I've tried loads of drugs, but it would really bug me if I got busted in the tabloids because I take them so rarely."

Asked about cocaine, he said: "I think that coke is middle-aged stuff. It's quite a slow drug that involves coffee tables. To me, it's a middle-class choice of drug."

He made the comments in an interview with broadcaster Janet Street Porter.

The frank admissions by the comedian, who signed a multi-million-pound deal with the BBC in August, earned him censure.

Referring to Norton, Tory MP John Whittingdale - chairman of the House of Commons culture, media and sport select committee - told the Daily Express that to "boast about the extent of your drug abuse and enjoyment, as he seems to have done, sends a message which is extremely dangerous and against everything which everyone, including the BBC, is trying to do."

Labour MP Gwyn Prosser told the Sun that Norton's comments were "grossly irresponsible".

Peter Stoker, of the National Drug Prevention Alliance, added: "Perhaps he'd like to ask the parents of those who died from ecstasy if they think it's fun."

Norton, 43, hosted BBC1's Saturday night show How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?, which found a singer to play the lead in Andrew Lloyd Webber's West End revival of The Sound of Music. He joined the BBC from Channel 4 two years ago.

Been causing a big stir this.

Personally i think its great when we see famous people come out and say things like this. Makes them all seem that more human to me and not as far away from 'us' like we think they are.

Irresponsible they say because of his following...But lets face it, its hardly like he has a following of youngsters is it. More so adults who have all tried and made their own decisions on it.

well i think Norton is an annoying wee prick and he should learn to keep his gob shut. He gives drug users a bad name and he's a part timer. I hate him and aye because i get the graham norton referance. I DONT look like him honest. Fcuk i look like graham norton on drugs

Getting back to drugs , off course they are good , are folk gonna take them to feel shit ?
Still , it will all ends in tears . mainly for the poor folk that do it , the rich can buy the better sort of drugs and check into the Priory when it gets to much for them.

A mental health charity has called George Michael "stupid and naive" after he was pictured smiling and lighting what appeared to be a cannabis joint.

Drug and alcohol treatment charity Addaction also said it was "concerned" about the message the pictures of him smoking could send to youngsters.

The 43-year-old pop star, who was interviewed by ITV's South Bank Show Special at his Madrid concert, part of his greatest hits tour, said cannabis was a "great drug" which kept him "sane and happy". He also called it a "terrible" and unhealthy drug.

But Paul Corry, director of public affairs at mental health charity Rethink, said: "As a huge international star any public comments will draw enormous attention.

"His comments are stupid and naive and our members, who we work with, will think the same about his comments.

"Cannabis is not a risk-free drug. For a significant minority of people it is a trigger for developing a severe long term mental illness like schizophrenia.

"Those most at risk are young people, the core of George Michael's audience, and people who use it over a long period of time and in large amounts.

The former Wham! idol said in the television interview: "This stuff keeps me sane and happy. I could write without it ... if I were sane and happy.

"I'd say it's a great drug - but obviously it's not very healthy. You can't afford to smoke it if you've got anything to do. Anything at all would be foolish.

But he told the Daily Mirror that it could be a "terrible, terrible drug", saying that it can "chill you out to such a degree that you could lose your ambitions".

Have to say im quite amazed at the number of celebrities who are openly coming out ad saying they smoke weed and love it.

They are putting themselves in danger imo of being picked on by the Police hoping to catch them with some on them to get them charged.

Thing that pisses me off is the hypocrisy of all the people shouting them down for saying they use drugs and saying they are so bad and so terrible etc.
Do they ever say the same thing about alcohol ? That's caused many many more deaths/mental illness/illness/problems than cannabis ever will yet if someone says they like a good piss up the reaction is oooh wahey what a jolly drinker etc and noone brands them as irresponsible and says how alcohol is such a terrible drug etc.

I also don't like the way a celebrity seems unable to have an opinion on anything without some bunch of nutters telling them they shouldn't have those views and it's irresponisble and it's terrible. I mean should all celebrities say they think drugs are terrible and say they support the wars their governments are making and generally basically constantly lie and present some sort of ideal fabricated image. Or should they perhaps be able to say I think my country invading places is shocking and I smoke ganj all the time without fear of that kinda pish. More people in america smoke ganj than voted for bush yet dare mention you ever use it and it's terrible and irresponsible and not what normal people do, wtf ?!?!
