Re: Champions League-draw

Three new faces
In all 28 clubs are involved in the first qualifying round with another 14 sides, including PFC Levski Sofia and København - who both reached the competition's group stage in 2006/07 - joining in the next round. In the first stage Andorra champions FC Rànger's - whose country is participating for the first time - will travel to FC Sheriff, champions of Moldova, for the first leg of their tie, while Montenegro champions FK Zeta - another country making its competition debut - have been paired with FBK Kaunas of Lithuania. The representatives of third country to take its bow in the first qualifying round, S.S. Murata of San Marino, will play Finland's Tampere United.

Past winners
Former winners Steaua and FK Crvena Zvezda - European champions in 1986 and 1991 respectively - will also enter in the second qualifying round and will face either Zagłębie Lubin or FK Pobeda or FC Levadia Tallinn respectively. Levski will face Tampere or Murata, Rangers FC will play Zeta or Kaunas, while Giovanni Trapattoni's FC Salzburg will take on The New Saints FC or FK Ventspils. Another side who were involved in the 2006/07 group stage, FC Shakhtar Donetsk, play Derry City FC or FC Pyunik.

Group-stage goal
Both draws were conducted at UEFA headquarters by UEFA General Secretary David Taylor, and Michele Centenaro, UEFA's head of club competitions. The second qualifying round winners will advance to the third qualifying round, where they will be met by another 18 teams entering at that point. The 32 clubs involved will then compete in 16 fixtures for the right to join the 16 automatic qualifiers in the group stage.

Re: Champions League-draw

Looks like first time in history of cl quals polish team will fail to advance to atleast 3rd quals round
Zaglebie is very unexperienced side in europe. Only good thing for them is that they got team wich will be seeded in 3rd round, so in case of unexpected win, Zaglebie will take over Steaua's seeding. All other points are for Steaua - players, experience, even stadium (Zaglebie will play on Lech stadium, couse their own is shite). Still it is mission impossible i reckon

Re: Champions League-draw

I think that Zaglebie don't have any chance against Steaua. They played last year CL and I read somewhere that they want to play again and they will buy more good players.

Re: Champions League-draw

TNS v FK Ventspils
Ventspils are from Latvia and as the report below mentions that they were Newcastle opponents last year , did anyone here see them?
I will be opposing TNS , who will be playing at Newtown's ground and not at "home"

This preview from welsh-premier site
Quote:
The New Saints were paired against Ventspils, currently fourth in the Latvian Visliga, and manager Ken McKenna knows his men will have their work cut out against a side that drew 0-0 with Newcastle United at St James' Park a year ago.
"I thought this year we would get a bit more luck, but this is one of the toughest draws we could have had," he says.
"They only lost by one goal to Newcastle over two legs, but the big disappointment for me is that they've already had 14 league games while we are out of season.
"Match sharpness is going to be a big problem again, but we've got to make sure we're in the best shape possible. The one positive is that we've got the home leg first, which has not happened very often for us, and we might surprise them," he added.
The Saints start their preparations today with an away game against Irish Uefa Cup contenders Dungannon Swifts.
Home advantage for the first game will be a big boost and I'm sure there will be a full house at Richmond Park."

I saw the away leg which was 0-0 at St.James. They strung 11 men behind the ball and Newcastle werent arsed to break them down. I dont rate the Latvian sides myself, one of their sides went out in the intertoto against Cliftonville from N Ireland and Linfield beat Ventspils a couple of years ago in the UEFA. They have an advantage in match practice but id say their ability would not be much higher if at all than Welsh/Northern Irish teams.

Re: Champions League-draw

Derry City FC (IRL) v FC Pyunik (ARM)

We are introducing to you “Derry city”

As it is already known the opponent of “Pyunik” from Yerevan according to the first qualification round of Champions’ League will be the Irish team – “Derry City”, which was founded in 1912. Let us try to go deeply into the peculiarity of the Irish championship and with that way to find out more about the oncoming opponent.

Irish football it is one of those cases when the strength of the championship and the national team is cardinally different. At first sight after these words there championship can be compared with Serbian and Swedish football, there is also a big difference between the gauge of the championship and national team after all. But the championship of the two abovementioned countries is “the smithy of talented ones” and it is no secret that the scouts of the leading clubs attentively examine them, which one can not say about the championship of Ireland.

As well as in the national team of Ireland are not being called the footballers from the own championship and the 90% of it are the football-players who are playing just in the clubs of England and Scotland. But it does not mean at all that all these footballers are assembled from Irish clubs. It is no secret that for a better career the Irish just move into the neighboring countries, and the majority just was born in those countries. That is why in contrast to our national team their championship does not play particularly an important role for the national team.

What about the play of the Irish clubs in the Euro cups, then, certainly, for us are more familiar the names of such clubs like “Shelbourne”, “Bohemians” or “St Patricks”.

About that team we do not know so much. Judging from the details from the official site of the club “Derry City” in last season took the second place. As it turned out the strongest club of Ireland “Shelbourne” because of financial problems stopped existing and correspondingly the right of playing in Champions’ League passed into the hands of vice-champion. But let us note that just this year “Derry” conquered the Cup of the country in the persistent contest winning “St. Patricks"

And it seemed that except “Shelbourne” quite often surpassing the first qualification round and reaching before last season till the 3rd qualification round of Champions’ League, the other clubs are weak on the European arena. But just “Derry City” in last season surprised and made itself be respected taking the second place in 2005 season, “Derry” got a permit in UEFA Cup. In first qualification round the strong Swedish “Gothenburg” was confronting the Irish which defeated by a 1:0 score both at home and in outside. Here in this way surprising, the Irish came out into the second qualification round, where the Scotch “Gretna” was waiting for them, which was smashed on his field by a 1:5 score. In the match at home the Irish played 2:2 and with a general score of 7:2 came out into the first round of UEFA Cup. And, naturally, there was waiting for them a serious club already, though the seriousness of previous prostrate opponents there is no need to doubt. And nevertheless the French “Paris S.G.” it is no joke already. Worthily playing goalless draw at home “Derry” conceded in outside 0:2. You can agree that to our measures it is totally impressive.

By the way, on February during the off-season time “Derry” in Spain had a control match with the main staff of “Dynamo” from Moscow, which ended in a draw 1:1.

What about the staff, then the middle age of the players of “Derry” is obviously elder than “Pyunik’s” players. In the team there are not such young footballers like in our champion’s team. The youngest player is 21 years old. The defense completely stands from the players before thirty years old or approaching the thirty year that is to say in defense it is gambled on the experience. It also confirms the fact that the role of the executer of the duties fulfills the 34 year-old number 4 player Peter Hutton, who is conducting the national team. The goal-keeper Pat Jennings did not play quite badly in today's match against “St Patricks”. The most effective player of the last season is number 18 player Mark Farren scoring 18 goals in 46 matches. There are legionaries in the team – one Englishman, seven Northern Irishmen and one Swede.
