Switzerland v Portugal - Basel

There's a temptation to give co-hosts Switzerland one more chance to send their fans away with some sort of positive memory despite the crushing blow of being eliminated after just two games.

After all, Portugal will rest a host of key players with a likely quarter-final against Germany coming up.

But consider this. The Portuguese have won seven successive group phase matches in European championships and World Cups and the winning habit they have under boss Phil Scolari is deeply ingrained.

This will be a chance for Portugal's fringe players to impress and, as potential winners of this tournament, it could offer the chance for some to play in a final if the door opens for them with an impressive display here or an injury to a first-teamer.

Switzerland's nightmare began when skipper Alexander Frei limped out of action during the first half of their opener against the Czech Republic and there's just that air of total disaster surrounding them - as highlighted by conceding a last-minute winner to Turkey which sent them crashing out.

Swiss confidence is fragile after taking these hammer blows and Portugal will be able to play with a sense of freedom.

We can try and cash in on that by backing the Portuguese to repeat Turkey's trick of turning around a half-time deficit.

Switzerland have started games quite well but have been hurt by three second-half goals.

It's perfectly possible that they can go in front again before unravelling after the break so back the Switzerland/Portugal HT/FT double result at 28/1.

Also have a saver on a Portuguese win at 5/4.

Verdict: Switzerland 1 Portugal 3

Re: 15th June: Switzerland v Portugal

Pretty much what the above says really.

I'll just add that i think there could be an equal amount of Portugese fans in the stadium tomorrow night, there's a huge Portugese population in Switzerland and i would imagine a few home fans will be cashing in on their tickets now they cant qualify.

I'm keeping stakes small because i want to stay in profit, i'm on Portugal to win by 2 or more goals @ 4/1 bet365 and ive also backed Quarsema 1st, last and anytime scorer with smaller bets.

Nah..I see it a touch differently.. Portugal are through and are resting players, and as well as that the Swiss as hosts have got some serious pride and reutation building for their fans. I cannot see them losing all 3 games... I can see 1-0 Swiss win or 1-1 draw..

I'm on the +0.25 asian on the Swiss

No bet for me here as Portugal arent gonna break sweat for a result having allready qualified and the Swiss will be looking to put on a bit of a show in front of their fans as the host nation in their last match.

To many ifs and buts in this game to risk any money on.

Re: 15th June: Switzerland v Portugal

Cheers folks,

fancy hosts to get something here. Portugal is already through and doesnt matter which team they line, few players will try to save their legs. I think that it will not be enough if few replacements are overmotivated.
I wouldnt be on swiss if they were bad in first games. But they were quite solid and unlucky not even to have one point or maybe three. Odds are good enough for me and I go on
Swiss (draw no bet)

1905: LINE-UPS Portugal v Switzerland
Portugal: Ricardo, Pepe, Miguel, Meira, Ferreira, Alves, Veloso, Meireles, Quaresma, Postiga, Nani.
Switzerland: Zuberbuhler, Senderos, Muller, Magnin, Lichtsteiner, Yakin, Inler, Gelson, Behrami, Vonlanthen, Derdiyok.

No Ronaldo, Swiss backed across the board, i still fancy Portugal though.

I'm gonna play the unders here. Swiss wont want to be humiliated and the Portuguese might struggle to stick the ball in the onion bag.
