Chill Derbyshire. I want to know a little more about my counties team so can you enlighten me on our chances in all forms of the game and how you think the season will end up for the 'shire. I was wondering your opinions on who is likely to win what.

Ooh and welcome to TDP, if you give decent opinion and information you will be a very welcome member of the board.

I do believe that was ODM's 'New Member Initiation Programme' in full swing there to ensure we don't have any more weepy eyed nancys on the premisis after so many got in early doors(and yes I include myself in that number!).

I'd make that a marginal pass too - welcome to TDP Derbyshire

Unlikely to win promotion in the LVC due to fact that we dont have the bowling attack to bowl teams out twice due to the fact our leading bowler has gone to Somerset. The rest of the bowlers are has beens or young. WE have BOyd Ranking (him of the CWC fame)Wayne White and also Simon Cusden but Ian Hunter is average at best, Kev Dean is a still a great swing bowler but is getting on in years and unable to bowl long spells. Tom Lungley has started the season well but he was picked to open as he had performed best in practice games, would love to see him back to the form of a few years ago but not sure, rest of bowling Wagg, Harvey and Botha is servicable but cant see us bowling many teams out twice

Batting is totally different. All power (apart from the openers Stubbings and Weston) Birt, Taylor, Katich, Harvey, Pipe and Wagg have the propensity to blow teams away, the thought of Harvey in the 20/20 with Birt and Katich is mind boggling, as we never really have had any power hitters before apart from Diva, also add big hitting Dan Birch in and we have a one day batting line up which will be able to chase down any target they want in theory.

Best chance of silverware is one day games never mind what coach says

Surprised Swoops hasn't posted his views on the County scene.

Would agree Derbyshire that the one dayers are your best chance of winning something. I don't mind getting thrashed by you in them, as long as Notts go on to the final again. Harvey is a good signing for you. You will have to enlighten me on Birt as I can't say I have heard of him! Surprised you didn't go for an overseas bowler, for as you said you are going to struggle to bowl teams out in the CC games.

Travis Birt is another Aussie. Big Hitting Left hander.

I guess Harvey must qualify as English now then like Stuart Law if he is allowed to play in the same team as Katich and Birt

I`m surprised at that too. We have enough batting as it is. We were gonna sign all rounder Jamie Hopes but he got "injured"

Problem with Birt is that I have never seen him pull the reins back. He is a one day player and takes that into the Championship which is fine but not if you are 39-4 and needing to bat out. (Although with our batting line up we will never be 39-4 this season, so its a moot point)

Re: New County Cricket Season starting today..

I've gone today for Yorks to beat Durham, Notts to beat Gloucs, Hamps to beat Surrey and Warwicks to draw with Surrey.
I placed these bets at betfair and some of the odds are gone now so I can't really proof them. I am no expert in domestic cricket so the wins are based purley on these teams looking on paper much stronger than the opposition. The Warwick draw is based on their four day game against Lancs petering out to a draw last week and the FP trophy game being 297 v 298. It is clearly a batting friendly wicket with Mushtaq Ahmed being the main concern. Wickets have been hard to come by so far at Edgbaston

Re: New County Cricket Season starting today..

Three out of four right and although I couldn't proof the odds as they had gone by the time I posted they were all above evens. Hope this after eventing is ok.
Yorks won inside 3 days as did Warwick (the one I got wrong). Sussex who won the championship last year were bowled out twice in just over three sessions
Hamps and Notts both won today in close run games with the final wicket being taken in the last 15 mins in both games.

Tommorrow is the FPT (friends provident trophy) and there are two picks.
Sussex to beat Somerset (2.25 at expert) and Warwick to beat Lancs (2.2 at betfred).
Sussex won this trophy last year and this is the first game in defence. It was a bad loss to Warwick in the LVCC but they did win last week so hopefully with a bad game out their system they will return to winning ways tommorrow. The game is on Sky.
Warwick had an incredible win v Northants last week and this seems to have given them great self belief. That was an impressive win v Sussex in the LVCC. Lancs are still without many of their best players and had a poor loss last week. Warwick should be favourites in this game.

Re: New County Cricket Season starting today..

Well done in you CC picks Colbro. You did well to get above evens in them too! I didn't think liquidity was too high on the betfair markets. I will have to change my name too late punter too, as too late really to give reasoning on my picks with games to start shortly.

I am going for Somerset, warwicks & Derbys to win.
Somerset have some really big hitters in Tresco, Langer & White so I am opposing you in that one Colbro.

Will have to remeber to post earlier next time!

Re: New County Cricket Season starting today..

Two winners for me today. Warwick almost threw it away against Lancs after restricting them to 183 but were struggling until Groenwald hit 5 sixes in 7 balls.
Sussex's better bowling was ultimately what won them the game v Somerset although there were a few lose shots from their batsmen.
I thought about Derbyshire too but chose not to in the end as I was not too sure about their bowling. Wish I had now as they won too.
