Re: ICC Cricket World Cup

I've just finished off watching the highlights of the 2nd NZ win over Australia at Eden Park, & filled in the gaps that I missed when I dozed off earlier.
I have to say that that is the worst bowling attack I've seen Australia put out in an international match. The number of full tosses was unbelievable, & when it bounced they sprayed it all over the place & bowled both sides of the wicket. I feel sorry for Mike Hussey....Jesus Christ wouldnt know how to set a field for the way they bowled today He set Cameron White a leg side field so he just had a close ring on the off, saving one.....& he bowls 3 full tosses on the trot outside off to Taylor who was on about 80 at the time Theres nothing that can be said to defend that, its just shit bowling
Right, first thing is that Whites not in the squad, but Bracken, McGrath, Watson, Tait & Hogg all are. Bracken seemed to do better than the rest & McGrath, although he seems to be fading fast, has too much nous to just get smashed every game. Watson picked up 3 wickets but 2 were full tosses & 1 was a big top edge & I keep saying it but all hes got is a change of pace & nothing else....hes cannon fodder & he can only be being picked because the selectors believe their own hype & truly believe theyre untouchable
Yes they have Lee to come back & replace Tait, who is never a one day bowler in a month of sundays, & that will help, but by his own admission hes only 50/50 to make it which means that this attack, minus White, could be starting in the WC.
That is not the bowling attack of world champions

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup

South Africa are currently 2.50 to win Group A on Bet365.

Another bad performance from Australia tonight and that price may soon go. On current form South Africa should be favourites for the group.

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup

OK, you know whats coming

The 3rd ODI between Australia & NZ has just finished, & Australia had everything going for them in this match after the last 2 games: NZ had rested their best 2 bowlers & their chief all rounder was still unfit, the game was a day/nighter & the Aussies won the toss enabling them to bat in daylight & NZ to bat under lights. Hayden batted throughout the innings despite breaking a toe & scored the highest ever one day score by an Aussie, & after 35 overs Australia were 188-1.
They scored 346-5, which had only ever been knocked off once before in the history of one day cricket.........& they lost !!

The Aussie batting, even missing Ponting & Gilchrist, has being doing the business, but theyve been writing cheques the bowlers simply arent good enough to cash.

FACT: the 4 highest run chases EVER have been scored against this Australian attack in the last 2 seasons, with the 2nd & 3rd highest being in the last 2 matches

FACT: 5 of the 6 highest run chases EVER, successful or not, have been scored against this Australian attack in the last 2 seasons, this also equates to 6 of the all time biggest 14 in the same time span.

There was no McGrath or White today but they played on sunday & friday & the suspicion that the time for McGrath to carry the attack through has gone.
Again the amount of full tosses was unbelievable at this level, & I keep saying it but Watson is simply not international class with the ball by a long, long, long way (nice 68 though )

Has anybody ever won the World Cup coming into the tournament on a run of 5 straight defeats & 6 in the last 7 ???? I think perhaps not :loon

This World Cup couldnt be more wide open, & all I've definetly worked out so far is that Australia are far too short with their bowling attack, & NZs chances deserve to be taken more seriously

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup

Brett Lee out of the World Cup

http://content-uk.cricinfo.com/wc200...t/story/281294

They had to make this decision IMO, what with Hayden having a broken toe although he swears he'll be fit for the 1st game, Symonds not appearing until at the earliest the last game of the 1st round, & Gilchrist out until the 2nd round. If they'd risked Lee as well then effectively they could well have had the bare 11 for the 1st couple of games & whether youre brilliant or not, thats well risky.

So Clarks made it I think thats a good decision for Australia although a pretty flawed thought process getting there

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup

Australias fortunes are on the turn with Gilchrist now being there for the entire WC now, & only arriving a couple of days later than the rest. Its just the filip they needed tbh & I would imagine its after someone had a word in his & Punters ear

Clarks been volunteering for power play & death duties & they seem to think McGrath will take the new ball, personally I think he'd be better first change but I do really worry about the amount of runs they'll be chasing if they play Tait, especially as Watson seems a certainty as well. I just cant see how a captain can set a field to Taits bowling Yes the Aussies like to regard themselves as special & look to take wickets when others look at run rates, but he cant bowl a line & length & Watson ??? Well, dont get me started on that useless twat again

Looking around the markets I see Paddy Power have Ross Taylor @ 33/1 highest tournament run scorer @ 1/4 odds 1st 4 places. I think Pie quoted 18's earlier in the thread.

Its about time I commented on the trials & tribulations of:

Pakistan

1.Inzamam-ul-Haq (captain)
2.Younis Khan (vice-captain)
3.Abdul Razzaq
4.Danish Kaneria
5.Iftikhar Anjum
6.Imran Nazir
7.Kamran Akmal (wicketkeeper)
8.Mohammad Asif
9.Mohammad Hafeez
10.Mohammad Yousuf
11.Naved-ul-Hasan
12.Shahid Afridi
13.Shoaib Akhtar
14.Shoaib Malik
15.Umar Gul

Well, what on earth do you say about this lot Theyve just been thumped in SA yet their batting line up is superb.....except the openers, obviously Theyve got the in form batsman in world cricket in Mohammed Yousuf & class around him in Inzi & Younis. Theyve got one of the biggest hitters in the game in Afridi & hes followed by Razzaq & Akmal at 7 & 8, yet they have been known on quick tracks with sideways movement to simply disintegrate & not want to know.
Normally I like to back Pakistan as you tend to get a rollercoaster ride for your money & you never know whats coming next, & you cant dismiss them from winning anywhere. Theres one massive problem this time though....their bowling.
They fly to the WIs on friday & that is also the last date that they can change an injured player, & theyve brought in anti-dope testing as compulsory....yet all players bar Asif & Shoaib Akhtar have taken the tests & passed. Both of these players were originally banned last autumn for taking nandrolone but the PCB cleared them on appeal. Apparently nandrolone stays in the system for ages & this is the worry, as the ICC reserves the right to drug test whoever in the WC & if found guilty a life ban is likely.
It doesnt take a rocket scientist to work out that if Asif & Shoaib travel to the WC they'll be tested. Officially theyre both carrying injuries & in Shoaibs case that appears to be true & hes only 50% fit, whereas whoever you listen to Asif is between 90% & 50%
The rumour is that theyve both undertaken tests in England & theyre leaving it until the last moment as to whether they'll travel. The 2 of them would be devastating on an uneven track & its no exaggeration to suggest Pakistans hopes rest on them as the rest of the attack is not threatening enough. Naved has slipped away somewhat although Umar Gul is likely to be fit, but the likes of Nazir & Sami just dont appear real international class. I dont think theyre worth backing tbh until the bowling issue is resolved....& I dont see them travelling

Another massive blow for Pakistan today in that Abdul Razzaq is out of the WC & has been replaced by Azhar Mahmood. Mahmoods no mean player but he hasnt got the same fear factor as Razzaq walking out with 10 overs to go

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup

Good stuff, Swoops.

I thought Ross Taylor may be around 18s; 33-1 seems a decent price as he looks to be solid now at No.3.

Meanwhile,

http://www.icc-cricket.com/icc/rules...conditions.pdf

Page 4, Para c is interesting.
The third umpire has to determine whether the batsman has been caught. However, when reviewing the television replays, if it is clear to the third umpire that the batsman did not hit the ball, he shall indicate that the batsman is not out.

By referral from on-pitch umpires? Off his own bat?

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup

Thats interesting actually Pie, as before the TV umpire could only comment on what the on-field umpire actually asks him to & nothing else, but the way that reads it looks like he has carte blanche to me

What it'll probably is that to stop themselves looking foolish, any really thin nicks they'll go upstairs which could disjoint the game proof is in the pudding I guess......

Pakistan have announced yesterday that Shoaib Akhtar & Mohammed Asif are out of the World Cup. This is a massive dent to their hopes & makes them virtually unbackable in my eyes. I ahavent checked the effects on the odds as yet.
Theres been a lot said on this subject, none more so than by Malcolm Speed, who really should keep his mouth shut at times as he seems to want to be more like George Bush than ICC President
The 2 were banned in october by their own board for taking nandrolone, & subsequently cleared later by the same board. The Anti-Doping people are involved in this so its complicated but the crux of the matter is that nandrolone stays in your body for a long time, & it became clear that the ICC would random test during the WC....& its hardly rocket science to believe that one or both would have been targetted. Pakistans itinerary after the WC is not hectic & I guess the hope is that they'll be clear by then.
It brings into question why they were allowed to resume playing but if they tested positive in the WC they'd likely get life bans, & Asif is likely to be the cornerstone of the attack for many years to come.
My belief is that for a week now theyve been sat in London being tested daily to see if the nandrolone levels were falling, therefore making a risk possible, but it was not to be & the loss of both makes the WC a less attractive place playing wise, if not morally.

So what of Pakistans chances now ?? Razzaq has already been replaced by Mahmood & now Arafat & Sami join the squad, leaving lt like this:

1.Inzamam-ul-Haq (captain)
2.Younis Khan (vice-captain)
3.Azhar Mahmood
4.Danish Kaneria
5.Iftikhar Anjum
6.Imran Nazir
7.Kamran Akmal (wicketkeeper)
8.Mohammad Hafeez
9.Mohammad Sami
10.Mohammad Yousuf
11.Naved-ul-Hasan
12.Shahid Afridi
13.Shoaib Malik
14.Umar Gul
15.Yasir Arafat

This means the quicks are Umar Gul, Naved & Sami backed up by Mahmood & Anjum, whilst the spinners will include Kaneria, Afridi, Malik & Hafeez.
Gul is returning from injury but has done well in the past year or so, although whether hes good or confident enough to be the mainstay of the attack is very much open to question. Naved has been a very good death bowler but has fallen away alarmingly in recent times & was lucky to be in the original squad, but his experience is badly needed. Sami isnt good enough I'm afraid, you just cant set a field to him....a ropey track might help him but other than that I just think hes meat & drink. Anjum is in as back up & is nothing to write home about, whilst Mahmood has been a good player on the county scene for Surrey in recent years but seemed as far from selection as earth is to the moon until the Pakistanis were dropping like flies in SA.
The winner in all this is Hafeez, as hes now guaranteed his place I would think. Afridi, Malik & Kaneria were all certainties in my eyes but the selectors will probably want another back up bowler with the potential problems with the seam attack.
I can see this attack going for runs tbh, & on small grounds it remains to be seen how effective part time spinners will be, as opposed to reliable full time spinners.
Being Pakistan, you can never write them off, & its true the batting can still get a big enough score that this bowling attack can defend, but I think medium pacers that spray it will go far & wide in this WC, so the batting will have to be looking at 325+ IMO.
What is in effect the group decider is the 1st match of the tournament when Pakistan play West Indies, & obviously 2nd stage points are on offer as the finishing positions dont matter as long as they both qualify. West Indiea bowling attack is under-rated I think, particularly at home, & people like Bradshaw & Taylor, backed up by Gayle, should do well. I fancy in normal circumstances that I'd back WIs to win this game 6.5 times from 10, although granted its dangerous to write off Pakistan at any time, & I've had a decent punt on Centrebets 1.67 for WIs to win the group.
The thing is, of the 8 strong nations, I'd now put Pakistans bowling as the weakest, which means theres potential for an upset. I did originally think that if there was to be an upset then it'd be Kenya versus either New Zealand or England, but I think the confidence & rejuvenated morale of those 2 sides now makes that unlikely. Now I'd say its Ireland or Zimbabwe versus Pakistan.

Ireland have come a long way in recent years, although its always hard to judge these things when teams are playing different levels of opponents, as in Zimbabwe have sunk as low as they can go at times but they still tend to play test sides in ODIS, rather than the non test sides that Ireland play. Theirs a few ifs & buts as there always is in potential upsets, but Ireland play Zimbabwe first & will see it as their best chance of a win by far. If Zimbabwe win by a street then its not worth touching the Pakistan match, but I feel it will be close & just a decent showing might make Ireland worth looking at in the next match.
The reason I plump for Ireland is 2-fold. Its the 3rd match & as all group matches are played on the same ground it will be the 3rd match in 5 days not even taking into account reserve days. Therefore I think its likely that the pitches will be used for 3 games each making this potentially worn & breaking, in life terms it will be a 5th day pitch, if not in playing terms.
The Ireland bowlers will have to have a golden day but if theres inconsistent bounce around its possible, but looking at the batting I'm pretty confident tbh. This is Irelands ODI history:

1 Eng 301/7 50 50 - W Only ODI v Eng in Ire 2006 at Belfast [2383]
2 Ire 263/9 50 50 302 L
1 Ire 240/8 50 50 - W Euro CC 3 v Sco in Sco 2006 at Ayr [2396]
2 Sco 155 41.3 50 241 L
1 Ire 274 50 50 - N Euro CC 7 v NL in Sco 2006 at Ayr [2401]
2 NL 125/5 19 48 272 N
1 Ire 280/7 50 50 - L ICC WCL 3 v Sco in Ken 2006/07 at Nairobi (Gym) [2492]2 Sco 284/7 50 50 281 W1 Ber 275/8 50 50 - L ICC WCL 4 v Ber in Ken 2006/07 at Nairobi (Jaff) [2494]
2 Ire 276/6 48.4 50 276 W
1 Ire 284/4 50 50 - L ICC WCL 8 v Ken in Ken 2006/07 at Nairobi (Ruaraka) [2499]
2 Ken 286/9 49 50 285 W
1 Ire 308/7 50 50 - L ICC WCL 11 v Can in Ken 2006/07 at Nairobi (Jaff) [2503]
2 Can 312/4 49.4 50 309 W
1 NL 260/7 46 46 - W ICC WCL 15 v NL in Ken 2006/07 at Nairobi (Gym) [2509]
2 Ire 254/8 46 46 261 L

Yes, England are the only 'proper' nation in there, & you have to take into account they had over 300 on the board, but Irelands lowest score so far is the 240-8 they scored at Ayr where they bowled Scotland out for just 155. You could also point to Canadas 312-4 ( ) but it may well be that at that level the batting is stronger than the bowling.

Unless they get the worst of the pitch, the Pakistan attack doesnt strike me as one guaranteed to knock Ireland over for under 220, which gives them a chance in my eyes.

Good price on Taylor! Centrebet have him at a paltry 25-1.

Wd help if NZ bat first against Kenya/Canada and would need to get to semis at least

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup

I've already touched on Kenya but not really any of the other minnows bar Irelands chances against Pakistan. As theyve not really got much chance in anything bar the odd game I'm not going to waste too much time on them bar posting a couple of links which are well worth a look.

http://content-uk.cricinfo.com/wc200...ry/282385.html

That touches on the real minnows & I've already taken the odd bet which I'll list down soon.....although the list could be monstrous Bermuda are playing England in the next hour which is on Sky & certainly isnt worth betting on, but it'll give me a look at them for starters. The obvious choice for their runs is David Hemp the ex-Warwicks & Glamorgan captain, but he doesnt appear to have been as successful as had been hoped tbh. Theyve got a couple of hard hitters & I've had a punt on Lionel Cann as their top series scorer, & I'll be having a look as to whether its worth backing him up with the skipper Irving Romaine.

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup

Heres another link to a run down of the teams although its not as detailed as it could be....although its Australian & that could explain it as they think they're the only ones in it probably

http://www.theage.com.au/sport/cricket/index.html

Canada I'm looking at John Davidson the captain I think as hes been there before & scored a 67 ball ton in the last WC vs WIs (?) Dougie Brown for Scotland looks a fair price at the 14/1 I've taken him at as with his experience hes seen it all before & played internationals for England as well. Kieran O'Brien looks the pick for Ireland for me @ 13/2 as Eoin Morgan is the rising star but hes too short & a bit too young I reckon. Holland has to be Ten Doeschate although hes 3/1, or maybe Baz Zuiderent @ 5's
