surely Newcastle at that price at home has to be considered? no? If they were going to London then i wouldnt be interested as they were probably just shagging whores in a hotel but at home its a diff matter. Aint it?

Re: England Domestic 21/22 Feb 2006

Just going over the report of Carlisle's 2-0 win over Macclesfield in September (official Carlisle site) and it seems it was an even contest until the Carlisle manager opted for a 3-4-3 (started with 5 in midfield). Here's the closing statement from that report:

Quote:
This was a victory built on patience, backed up by a tactical change, on the hour, that left Macclesfield wondering how to cope. Credit has to go to Paul Simpson for the change in formation that led to a very positive close to the game that all but blew the visitors away.
That was quite a while back however and obviously Macclesfield went on to beat them 3-0 (2-0 up after 10 minutes I think) at the end of January. Here's a few snippets (Carlisle official site again):

Quote:
The home side were dangerous themselves, particularly with their height
Quote:
Tails were up for Macclesfield and they looked dangerous with every early attack.
Quote:
United were finding it hard to get any meaningful possession with Bridges and Hawley working hard up front but with no joy, and it was slick passing from Macclesfield that opened things up again in the 20th minute.
Quote:
A disastrous first half was capped off in the 42nd minute when Whitaker was allowed to ghost free during another quick attack, as Hawley conceded possession too easily on the half way line. Harsley was played clear and he could have picked a number of passes with blue shirts flooding forward. Danny Whitaker it was who was on hand to meet it and smash the ball beyond the despairing dive of Westwood.
I can't recall reading much about Macclesfield this season but they are sounding like a pretty dangerous counter attacking side to me. I'm not sure I'd fancy chancing Carlisle here to be honest, despite their impressive league form and home record. Crikey, since Macclesfield beat Carlisle 3-0 they've had 4 consecutive 1-1 draws. 3 of them away from home (Shrewsbury, Mansfield, Oxford) and the other home to Lincoln.

Looks a bit dodgy to me and possibly tighter than the odds suggest. I'll hunt for some team news.

Re: England Domestic 21/22 Feb 2006

I could even be tempted by a wee Macclesfield bet:

Quote:
Carlisle v Macclesfield
Carlisle will be without striker Michael Bridges (cup-tied) for the LDV Vans Northern Area Final first leg against Macclesfield.

Bridges could be joined on the sidelines by defender Kevin Gray who has a foot injury.

Macclesfield have one injury concern. Goalkeeper Alan Fettis (thigh) has missed the last two games and Tommy Lee has deputised.

Lee is poised to step in again if Fettis fails to regain full fitness.
Hasn't Bridges been Carlisle's main man of late? Oooooo, maybe Macclesfield +1 - anyone want to help me decide?

Re: England Domestic 21/22 Feb 2006

I suppose Newcastle have a decent chance, Komp although I'm not that tempted by the odds:

BBC:
Quote:
Newcastle will make a late check on the fitness of captain Alan Shearer and Kieron Dyer ahead of their rearranged Premiership clash.

Celestine Babayaro completes a two-match ban while Stephen Carr (hernia), Michael Owen (foot) and Steven Taylor (shoulder) are out.

Marcus Bent is available for Charlton after sitting out the 3-1 FA Cup win over Brentford as he was cup-tied.

Dennis Rommedahl is doubtful with a rib complaint as is Jonathan Fortune.
Quote:
Newcastle's caretaker boss Glenn Roeder: "We are only looking one way, and that is up. "The way we are looking is just to get as high up the table as we can. "There is no reason whatsoever to be looking over our shoulder."

Re: England Domestic 21/22 Feb 2006

Brilliant team news their Mickey. Kev Gray is Carlisle's key defender they fall apart when he's not there.

They transformed from a team who'd lost once up until december to one who in the 3 and a half months Gray was out their league record was won 1 drawn 5 lost 5. Macclesfield are unbeaten in 4 or 5 and as stated above they beat Carlisle 3-0 at home recently.

I'll have a speculative punt against Carlisle tonight at those odds but only if Gray is defintely out. Gray is their man Mickey, Bridges is just a bonus.

This does come with the usual 'This is the LDV' warning mind.

Re: England Domestic 21/22 Feb 2006

As a regular carlisle supporter, kev grays loss was a bonus, his form lately has been very poor, slow and reckless in the tackle, we have 2 other quality central defenders as back-up, Livesey and Grand, who can do as good a job if not better. Gray is a leader on the pitch which is a great asset, but the confidence in the team is so high at the minute they dont need to be told how important each game is. Bridges is class, but we have 2 other centre forwards in reserve, Mark Rivers bought recently from Crewe is a quality player but cant get in the team. Our main asset this year has been the quality of the squad, our reserve team is top of the league too and would give most conference clubs a game. Second half was one way traffic last night, but the pitch is so bad at the minute we are better off playing away from home! Macclesfield are a decent side and the second league will be equally as tight. Have booked my hotel in Cardiff though just in case!

Re: England Domestic 21/22 Feb 2006

Newcastle v Charlton

I don't subscribe to the theory that the sudden departure of Souness has transformed The Toon into a decent side.

I am not impressed by

a), a 2-0 win at 2nd division Cheltenham

b) a 2-1 win at Villa when the home side had to do without 3 first choice midfield players.

c) a 1-0 home win against Southampton who can't even win in their own division.

Lets not forget the 3-0 drubbing at Man City in between.

Charlton are not my favourite team. Their away record is not so hot at the moment but at least they can score a goal or two on the road.

Newcastles hopes rest on Kieron Dyer at one end and Given at the other. Dyer still faces a fitness test. If he misses the game then the 18/5 offer from Betdirect on a Charlton victory will look mighty tempting.

And to heap more misery on the North East (and hopefully AMP) surely Blyth can't get a result at Prescot. Can they?
