Re: League 2, 2nd & 3rd Jan

No worries mate.

I just decided to "fry" some pasta and whilst I was working out how to ignite the camping stove (bachelor pad-no kitchen / food in the fridge until said girl arrived) damn near set myself on fire and have gashed my elbow on the door trying to escape the flame. Oh well.

Right, Cheltenham. I was surprised that they've made it up to fifth and it's a shame that Tote must've got stung on their top 7 markets last season because if they could sign a goal scorer (I've never rated ex Bristol City Kay kay Odaake (sp) but he had a good game against Chester, or Damian Spencer) they could make the play off as manager John Ward has success at this level. Still, I believe Stephen Gillespee will score goals at this level but he seems to be used as a sub a lot lately.

From their offical site:

Ward calls for one more big effort

John Ward interviewed before the away trip to Stockport County on Bank Holiday Monday:

"We saw in the game against Shrewsbury that they looked a little bit fresher than us having missed one of the games over Christmas and New Year. Now we are going to Stockport who have had two less games than us so I think it becomes a bit more difficult for us. But the resolve of the players is first class and their attitude and ability is really impressing me at the moment. If we can get one more big effort from this really tough programme then a win up there would be fantastic.

"Stockport have a new caretaker manager in charge and it leaves us a bit blind going into the game. We'd hoped to see a game where Jim Gannon had picked his side and we haven't seen that [their game on Saturday was called off]. The only thing we know is that Bramble is out because he got sent off in the last game and when there is a change of manager and things are altering in the football club it gives the players a wee bit of impetus to say 'here we go, we can start our season now.' We're going to have to be ready for it and deal with it. But if we can try our best and work hard and show a bit of ability then we will have the chance to get a result.

"We trained Sunday and had a bit of a head count. Shane Duff is struggling and Grant McCann won't be fit and available. There are other knocks and bumps which have got less than 24 hours to recover from but the squad is good and the rest of the players are fit. If anybody comes in, as we saw against Shrewsbury with David Bird, they are fit and ready and coming into a side that is doing well. That has to be a big lift for them as well.

"We managed to get Steven Gillespie's loan extended to the end of January. Bristol City were really good to us with that. Steven has the ability to get a goal, he has brightness around the penalty box and a bit of pace as well and if we can do that for us a little bit longer we will be delighted.

Hope this helps.

I'll add my support to the Cheltenham bandwagon too I'd probably take just about anyone against Stockport at the moment. I was on Bury the other day, but it got called off

Stockport might be rubbish but they have only lost 2 at home all season. Their record reads 1-7-2. Maybe laying Stockport would be the safer option as opposed to backing Cheltenham as I see the draw as being a distinct possibility?

Re: League 2, 2nd & 3rd Jan

Grimsby have a host of injury problems and Carlisle could cause them a few problems. I can see Carlisle nicking it.

Darlo have lost 2 strikers in the last couple of days and this for a team who are hardly prolific infront of goal to begin with. Wainwright could do the business for them today as Torquay's right-back looked terrible against Barnet (can't remember his name though). A below evens lay of Darlo won't be a bad bet.

Would be with you all on the lay of Wycombe, risky but the price is madness IMO. Then there's Cheltenham, I'm not sure what to make of that one, mainly because I don't know what Stockport will turn up. You must bare in mind that Stockport have only lost twice at home this season. Cheltenham will be without Grant McCann which is a big miss for them, am not sure on this one if I'm honest. Can't see Stockport winning but can also see Cheltenham not winning.

Over / Under selection - Under - Peterborough v Bury - Both teams will be without their top strikers Danny Crow (injured) and Danny Reet (recalled by Sheff W).

In truth I can see me not being on anything from L2 today.

I wasnt going to contribute on this floating GC thread but Lincoln have suspended their manager & assistant in tha last hour or so & a lower coach put in charge today at short notice. Mansfield at home are 5/4 Bet365

Anyone considering Wrexham at Shrewsbury tonight? Seems Wrexham have a good record home and away against the shrews and the home team have pretty awful form at the mo.

needs a bit more research methinks

Re: League 2, 2nd & 3rd Jan

I'd been thinking about that match myself handicapman but Shrewsbury don't look too bad at home to me: one defeat and really quite tight. Tricky one. Especially when I spy that Wrexham have only won once on the road and are one of the lowest scorers away from home. Rather drawy looking to be honest although Wrexham are in the better form of the two as you said.

BBC:
Quote:
Shrewsbury v Wrexham
Glynn Hurst is expected to make his debut for Shrewsbury after signing from Notts County last week.

Fellow forward Duane Darby was rested against Cheltenham but could return, while Joe Hart will hope to keep his place in goal after ovecoming injury.

Wrexham defender Danny Williams is suspended following his red card against Grimsby on New Year's Eve.

Dragons boss Denis Smith is likely to use either Shaun Pejic or Paul Warhurst to cover Williams' absence.
I'm stumped.

Fair point there MickeyPaul, and I agree its looking like it could be a draw - gonna leave it alone or maybe have a couple of quid on the 1-1.

Re: League 2, 2nd & 3rd Jan

It's not over yet, handicapman: Preview from the official Shrewsbury site:

Quote:
What a way to start the New Year, Wrexham at home - and definitely need a win or face coming out of the festive period with 0 points.

Those who went to Cheltenham on New Years Eve will have witnessed a much improved performance but Salop still appear to be missing the cutting edge to open teams up and convert possession into goals.

The transfer window is open again and Gary Peters has swooped already to sign Glynn Hurst from Notts County - Hurst has scored 9 goals in 15 starts so far this season and will now be Peters' number one striker.

More signings are expected, with a left-winger and centre-half rumoured to be on Gary's shopping list, which could see Town switch to 4-4-2.

Despite their crippling financial problems Wrexham are having a decent season and lie in 9th place with 34 points.

Town don't have a great record against the Robins, the last time Wrexham played here Lee Jones scored a last-minute winner to compound Town's woes.

Shrewsbury

New signing Glynn Hurst will make his debut tonight which will see either Kelvin Langmead or Colin McMenamin dropped to the bench with Mark Stallard making up the attacking trio.

Neil Ashton or Kevin Sharp could find themselves back on the bench if Peters sticks with 4-3-3, while Edwards, Tolley and Sorvel look set to continue in the middle.

Dave Walton is still ruled out by injury and the out-bound Ben Smith & Duane Darby are unlikely to be involved.

Predicted Team (4-3-3)

Hart, Hart, Whitehead, Hope, Sharp, Edwards, Sorvel, Tolley, McMenamin, Hurst, Stallard.

Subs: Brush, Cowan, Denny, Ashton, Langmead.

Wrexham

Wrexham defender Danny Williams is suspended following his red card against Grimsby on New Year's Eve.

Dragons boss Denis Smith is likely to use either Shaun Pejic or Paul Warhurst to cover Williams' absence.

Predicted Score

Shrewsbury 3-1 Wrexham

Glynn Hurst makes an instant impact as he scores a hat-trick on his debut to hand Town their first win over Wrexham in years.
Interesting. Hurst could be a decent addition to the squad. Didn't he used to play for Ayr Utd? I'm going to try and get through some match reports.

Re: League 2, 2nd & 3rd Jan

Not had a great deal of time to get through as much as I'd like but I think Shrewsbury sound ok and Hurst could well be the key in helping them improve results as they sound pretty tight at the back. Very difficult to find a bet here though. Shrewsbury HT @ 3.00 may have interested me if I'd had more time but I'm happy to sit this one out. Come on Sheff Utd.

Re: League 2, 2nd & 3rd Jan

Hurst does indeed prove to be the key, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win. Nice signing looks like.
