Re: Carling Cup - 20th & 21st December

brum will play their strongest side and look to restore some pride, even so their strongest side is still pretty poor, depends on how many youngsters fergie plays imo,too many and it could be close, half a decent side and only one winner, not touching until confirmed team news.

Re: Carling Cup - 20th & 21st December

i was reading in the racing post about man u being extremly under strength bromsgrove. lemme look online (56k )

Birmingham can give Bruce some Christmas cheer ..... Ian Coyne
Birmingham, 5pts 5-1 (Bet365)
BIRMINGHAM, thrashed 4-1 at Manchester City on Saturday, could have more joy against Mancunian opposition in tonight’s Carling Cup semi-final against Manchester United at St Andrews.
Steve Bruce’s team were outclassed at Eastlands, and their manager is under pressure with the club second-bottom in the top flight.
But providing Sir Alex Ferguson isn’t bluffing about continuing with his policy of giving experience to emerging youngsters in this competition, the United manager could be about to throw his former player a much-needed lifeline.
Team news is so often vital when itcomes to assessing how to bet on Carling Cup games, and while you would certainly be with United’s first team at 8-13, the side that looks likely to take to the field in the Midlands is no value at that price.
United have rallied lately, with improved performances in the wins at home to Wigan and against Aston Villa at Villa Park.
But it is no secret that Ferguson doesn’t think much of this competition and United may be about to crash out, like they did at West Brom after playing their second string there the season before last.
With an important series of league fixtures coming up over the festive period culminating with a trip to Arsenal on January 3, he looks set to jump at the chance to give his first-choice men the night off.
The provisional squad he released yesterday didn’t include striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, centre-back Rio Ferdinand, midfielders Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs, and goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.
Right-back Gary Neville and strikers Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo are in the party, though none of that trio are sure to start, and with striker-cum-midfielder Alan Smith and forward Louis Saha facing fitness tests the visitors’ line-up could well have a very youthful look to it.
Birmingham are no longer without a win on their own territory against Premiership opposition after beating Fulham 1-0 in their last home outing.
They were embarrassing in the defeat by City.
But this game gives them a chance to respond swiftly to the stinging criticism they received from their coach,as Bruce is likely to name his best available team.
The Blues’ main problem this season has been a lack of goals. But they should benefit from having Emile Heskey, who missed the shambolic performance against City, back in their attack.
The big strikershould get plenty of chances against a United team set to contain so many inexperienced players.
Team news .....
Birmingham
Goalkeeper Maik Taylor comes in for suspended Nico Vaesen, while keeper Colin Doyle is recalled to the bench from a Millwall loan spell.
Muzzy Izzet (hamstring) and Mario Melchiot (thigh) are still sidelined.

Manchester United
Boss Sir Alex Ferguson will check on the fitness of Louis Saha and Alan Smith.
Both men missed the weekend win over Aston Villa with viruses and Ferguson will want to be sure the duoare 100% fit before he selects them again

Re: Carling Cup - 20th & 21st December

I know kegman posted the bbc thingies but theres more added and updated-

Wigan v Bolton
Wigan manager Paul Jewell is again likely to be without Josip Skoko, Stephane Henchoz and David Connolly for the Carling Cup quarter-final.
Skoko (groin), Henchoz (dead leg) and Connolly (Achilles) missed Saturday's 3-0 win at home to Charlton and are rated doubtful for the Wanderers game.
Bolton defender Tal Ben Haim is available after serving a one-game ban.
Full-back Ricardo Gardner could also come into contention following a hamstring strain.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wigan boss Paul Jewell:
"People talk about the way Bolton play long ball, but it's an unfair tag because they have some good players.
"They don't get enough credit for how good they are, which I think irks Sam Allardyce, who has turned them into one of the top six clubs in the country."

Bolton boss Sam Allardyce:
"We want to finish off a major six days in style.
"Confidence is high, we are dominating teams and punishing the opposition.
"The squad is excited, it's starting to believe we can achieve more than they thought we could."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wigan (from): Pollitt, Chimbonda, McMillan, Jackson, Henchoz, Camara, Johansson, Kavanagh, Mahon, de Zeeuw, Francis, Taylor, Teale, Skoko, Bullard, McCulloch, Baines, Roberts, Connolly, Wright, Waterhouse, Walsh.
Bolton (from): Jaaskelainen, Hunt, O'Brien, N'Gotty, Ben Haim, Jaidi, Gardner, Giannakopoulos, Faye, Okocha, Nakata, Fadiga, Nolan, Speed, Diouf, Davies, Borgetti, Vaz Te, Walker

Birmingham v Man Utd
Birmingham goalkeeper Maik Taylor comes in for suspended Nico Vaesen, while keeper Colin Doyle is recalled to the bench from a Millwall loan spell.
Striker Emile Heskey could return after missing the last game because his partner was due to give birth.
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will check on the fitness of Louis Saha and Alan Smith.
Both men suffered from viruses and Ferguson will want to be sure they are 100% fit before he selects them again.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Birmingham chairman David Gold:
"I know loads of people will be saying 'I'll be happy to lose on Tuesday as long as we can win the next three league games'.
"But there is no doubt that winning any game is a habit.
"If we win this, it sets the players up for the Christmas games and the confidence starts coming back."

Manchester United goalkeeper Tim Howard:
"Edwin van der Sar said he needs to be on his toes and that's the case.
"We have some really good professionals who are fighting for a place. Everyone is training well and watching their backs. That's the way it should be."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Birmingham (from): Maik Taylor, Doyle, Martin Taylor, Tebily, Cunningham, Upson, Painter, Clapham, Johnson, Clemence, Butt, Dunn, Heskey, Pandiani, Forssell, Pennant, Jarosik.
Man Utd (from): Howard, Steele, Neville, Bardsley, Eckersley, Brown, Pique, O'Shea, Richardson, Ronaldo, Fletcher, Martin, Smith, Park, Jones, Rossi, Saha, Ebanks-Blake, Rooney

Re: Carling Cup - 20th & 21st December

Man Utd will be facing Birmingham again at St. Andrews Stadium
on the 28th in a league fixture. Imagine Birmingham losing to a 2nd string
United team.... the damage to morale would be tremendous.. It would be like another Villa-Utd game on the 28th, where Utd have already won b4 the ball has even been kicked.

Re: Carling Cup - 20th & 21st December

With the bit of luck going my way for the last few days, I have decide to try
my uck with a bit of a crazy bet.

I've had Man United (-1) @ 15/8 in PaddyPowers and now the price has been
cut back to 17/10 (not because of my measly 100 Euros mind)

Am I mad or what...............

Re: Carling Cup - 20th & 21st December

Well if they play like anything they did on Saturday then i'd have cash on Utd's under 16's to beat them as they were so dire.

Fergies going to go for it even if he does chuck in a couple of kids but United have enough strength in depth to pick a second 11 thats more than capable of finishing off Birmingham.

Wigan V Bolton has the making of a good game with nothing to pick between them and both wanting to win. Wigan have a few injury worries who no doubt will be playing as is the norm nowadays as anything other than a broken leg seems to be cleared up in a matter of days so i cant really see Henchoz not playing.
no matter who play's though it has Draw written all over it.

I've been observing the youngsters in the current United set-up right for some time... And my, do they have some really good players breaking thru the ranks... Players like Rossi, Pique and Lee Martin et al. are the next generation of United stars...

The youth team won something last yr din they?

Re: Carling Cup - 20th & 21st December

According to the sports news on either 5 live or talksport (I was switching between the two on the way home) Fergie has said that he WILL be playing a vastly weakened side with only the inclusion of a couple of older heads such as Saha and either O'shea or Ferdinand.

Personally, this would surprise me immensly and would just be further proof that the silly old cunt has lost the plot altogether and still lives in a world where Man United are actually winners, instead of the sad also runs that they've turned into.

They should be trying to win this AND the FA Cup. They may have been below the United team of a few years ago but they should be damned happy to win anything with the shower of shite they've got at the moment.

Maybe it's bullshit? I'm hoping so as I'm backing them to qualify tonight AND to win the competition outright.

Re: Carling Cup - 20th & 21st December

Sky Sports News had Fergie saying he was playing youngsters plus one of Rio or Brown, Gary Neville (maybe) & Saha. However he did say that youngsters included Richardson, Ronaldo & Fletcher (not saying much maybe but even he should give Brum trouble).

Rooney's still a youngun - go on Fergie lob him in!

Re: Carling Cup - 20th & 21st December

I agree ODM , he's a senile fuker if he thinks he can get away with fashioning a deliberate defeat tonight.

As for Wigan v Bolton , let noone forget this is a fierce local derby and should be treated as such
